Narcolepsy and orexin knockout mice

Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy and orexin knockout mice

narcolepsy

Avatar n tn Hi, welcome to the forum. Your history is suggestive of narcolepsy. In this condition there will be excessive daytime sleepiness. In this condition there will be “automatic behavior" such as driving past a highway exit or writing off a page, with no memory of the previous few minutes. Classical narcolepsy constitutes of Hypnagogic hallucinations, Sleep paralysis and Cataplexy (emotionally triggered muscle paralysis resulting in partial or complete collapse).
Avatar m tn Classical narcolepsy constitutes of Hypnagogic hallucinations, Sleep paralysis and Cataplexy which is not seen in your case. You need to undergo tests like Polysomnography, Multiple Sleep Latency Test and CSF levels of Orexin/Hypocretin which help to substantiate the diagnosis. Having regular nap for about 20 min during day will help to prevent sleep attacks.
Avatar n tn The combination of this study and my first MSLT nap study produced a perfect pattern for diagnosis of Narcolepsy. Has there ever been a study to look at the coorelation between the 2 diseases. Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy. For years, I have suffered from EDS muscle weakness that has become worse as I have aged (mid-40's). In the beginning, I blamed it all on being single and burning the candle at both ends (20's); then being a new parent (30's) and then being a single mom to a child with narcolepsy and a preteen (now 40's). I was told I have mild cataplexy.

Drugs like Modafinil, Methylphenidate and Amphetamines against prescription can help to increase the alertness during the day and they are esp. useful in excessive daytime sleepiness or increased sleep attack.
Avatar m tn As robere pointed out it can be Hypnagogic hallucinations which is a component of narcolepsy and also can be associate with Sleep paralysis and Cataplexy (emotionally triggered muscle paralysis resulting in partial or complete collapse). Even certain drugs acting on CNS can cause such visual hallucination. Other CNS causes should be ruled out.
Avatar n tn Then I took a bite of an apple, same result (I have a whole apple the night before, and was fine). Got scared and went to emergency, by the time I got there, I felt much better, but my systolic blood pressure was 155 (my normal is around 100). When the doctor got to see me, he couldn't find much sign of allergic reaction, so sent me home with prescription for epi-pen. I lived on plain steamed rice for the rest of day 3.
Avatar n tn i saw a show yesterday about narcolepsy and they mentioned a vaccination was given to a 13 year old girl and 2 hours later she was experiencing cataplexly (a paralyzing catatonic state that is a symptom of narcolepsy) but they did not say which vaccination.
729135 tn?1247495402 My MSLTs say I have Idiopathic Hypersomnia. The genetic panel says positive for HLA-DR2, DR7 and HLA DQ1, and DQ2. It also says that hypersomnolence does not have a genetic association. During my MSLT, my sleep latency naps were 2, 1.1, 3.1, and 3.1. During the 2nd nap, (<1) I didn't think I feel asleep because I was thinking about falling asleep, The test said no REM in any naps. Do I have narcolepsy or hypersomnia?
Avatar n tn Hi, narcolepsy and sleepwalking are different sleep disorders. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnagogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It can however be regulated with medications. So, ensure to take them regularly and follow up with your doctor. Regards.
Avatar n tn Ok I have a red tail boa and I feed him mice. I'm about a month pregnant and was wondering if its ok to handle the mice and clean out their tank? Thank you.
Avatar f tn I have had MS since 1995. I have gone through many bouts of paralysis, blindness, hear loss, memory loss, confusion and now I have narcolepsy. Everyone thought I was crazy and didn't think it was serious.....although I had 11 incidences of falling asleep while driving. I work for Disability Rehabilitation Services and they hire alot of people with disabilities. If they see me and I am having facial paralysis (Bells Palsy) or dragging my left I have had MS since 1995.
Avatar m tn The injection of cholesterol-conjugated siRNA and modified-polymer can be temporally separated up to four hours without significant effects on gene silencing, suggesting that delivery does not depend on the association of targeted PBAVE and the cholesterol-conjugated siRNA in the blood. Genetic knockout of the ASGPr eliminates effective delivery of the cholesterol-conjugated siRNA, indicating that delivery depends on proper targeting of the PBAVE polymer.
871962 tn?1244730028 Think about adding medications, treatments and other issues relating to narcolepsy and hypersomnias to your sleep tracker. Insomnia and sleep apnea may be common sleep disorders, but not the only ones.
612876 tn?1355514495 The sleep specialist said that narcolepsy and dysautonomia are mediated in some of the same parts of the brain, and for reasons that aren't yet completely understood, people who have one tend to have higher rates of the other than healthy people. He said that this will make treatment of both disorders more complicated, obviously. But I am just so excited to have an answer finally!
Avatar f tn And the cages need to be cleaned really bad so I just need to know if I should take any precautions with it because my bf doesn't really like having anything to do with them lol.
Avatar m tn memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy, and it can be exacerbated by the hormone shifts that happen with menstrual cycles. In fact, often times, people don't have "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too.
Avatar n tn See a sleep center. Recurrent "Bells Palsy," memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy. In fact, often times, it's not "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (especially the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too. Common misdiagnoses are depression, epilepsy, and migraines.
Avatar n tn ve been reading about narcolepsy, and although my sleep study did not indicate anything about it, I find one of its symptoms prevalent in my experience. Often, I seem to dream right when I fall asleep - not after the 90 minutes it's supposed to take to reach REM. I know this is true because sometimes I'll wake up only about a half hour after falling asleep, having already dreamt. Does anything other than narcolepsy cause this?
167426 tn?1254086235 An even higher dose killed all of the well-fed mice from a different genetic strain but none of the starved mice, and again the mice that fasted regained their weight. Skipping food won't harm most patients Other cancer experts said a few days of fasting would not harm most cancer patients. "This could have applicability in maybe a majority of patients," said Dr. David Quinn of the University of Southern California.
