I, like many of you, take handfuls of drugs just to live thru the day and suffer side effects from the drugs is just as debilitating as the pain. My doctor allowed me to try Namenda, which is a alzheimer drug that works by calming overactive neurons in the brain. There has been studies to see if it helped chronic pain and most of them showed it did not. I wanted to try it for myself and she allowed me too. My shrink also thought it was a good idea to try.
my husband just started on Namenda, starter doses, however, while I was at work today, he took 3 of the pills(5mg), should I be concerned? do I just have him continue tomorrow with the correct one pill in the morning? doesn''t seem to have any side effects.

Hi! Have you tried any of the anti-epileptics? Usually the first one that is tried is Topamax. That helped me for awhile. The only side effects that I had from it were some numbness and tingling in my hands and feet. They say that is pretty normal. I also tried Lamictal, Keppra, and Depakote.
The drug that I have found the most relief from is actually an Alzheimer's drug. It is called Namenda. There has been some research that has shown that it helps to prevent migraine.

She did a mini neuro/cognitive eval and said this may be something more than MS. Now she has prescribed Namenda XR for me. I googled it and it says it's for Alzheimers. I do have family that have/had dementia/Alzheimers. Does anyone else with MS take this??? Or do you know anyone with MS that takes it? From what I read, it makes symptoms worse with people who have MS. Sad face...
If you are symptom free with it is best to continue it. It is suggested to consult your attending doctor before altering your drug schedule ort any change in dosage. I sincerely hope it helps.

t know the name of the drug but I believe there are new drugs for dementia. My husbands friends mother is on something that is new and she is doing better... I would discuss this again with the doctor and even if nothing else, maybe a mild tranquliser for the daytime would help..The ativan is good for situational anxiety but maybe your mother needs something a little stronger to quiet the chatter in her mind.

My mom's medication regeime has had risperdal added to it. She is alteady on zoloff and the standards for alzeheimer's including namenda. Since putting her on the risperdal she sleeps all the time, has had a to be restarted on blodd pressure medication and seems to be losing her mtor skills.
I am very concened about these changes and wonder if the risperdal is the right dosage or medicine.
First of all his doctor changed and titrated his blood pressure medications and also they found Namenda to be quite helpful.
I have asked that he be taken off of this drug as it represents to me a chemical lobotomy. His caregivers agreed and simply substituted Seriquil. Obviously I would like him taken off of this also. I am being met with resistance and am concerned that the attending physician is completely in the dark about several studies regarding the negative effects of these particular drugs in elderly patients with dementia, or any helpful alternatives.
Hello. I have CFIDS/ME triggered by Lyme borreliosis. It's caused retrovirus (think HIV), only not deadly of course. It only causes torture, low Natural Killer cell counts, and reduced immunity. I'm so happy a retrovirus was found for an otherwise unexplainable disease, but in the mean time, there is no treatment.

He is delusional, on disability and is taking Zyprexa, Amantadine, Namenda, Cymbalta and excelon patch. Still, he seems to worsen. He now has symptoms of Parkinsons with balance issues. He is 55 years old - much to young to be this dibilitated. He was tremendously active, a college graduate who owned his own business. A year and a half ago the doctor said he had the first stages of dementia. It seems to be getting worse. He is taking Namenda. He also has a heart condition and a lung condition. He is on oxygen 24/7.
He is also a diabetic with kidneys not working properly. Will vitamin B1 help with his dementia.? or is there anything else he could take or do.?
