I had a nasal swab test done four years ago which came back positive for staph aureus, though doctors did not mention MRSA. Over the next few years I went to other doctors and a dermatologist, given such medications as bactrim, clindamycin, doxycyclin, mupirocin ointment, etc. None have worked. I went to a primary care doctor last week who performed a general bacterial culture on one of the sores I squeezed and sent of to the lab.

This complicated problem has no easy answer. Among the questions I would have is are you a carrier of MRSA (i.e. have you had a nasal culture for staph, do you have any ongoing open wounds that might harbor staph). Your massive weight loss immediately says that the quality of your skin and underlying tissues is not normal or necessarily healthy. An infectious disease specialist might also be a resource to consult with about prophylactic antibiotic coverage.

My daughter who is just graduated high school has had 4 cases of MRSA in the last 12 months. She was last treated with a nasal antibiotic; twice daily for 5 days. While cleaning her room I found 3 unused doses... will this make the treatment less effective & can the MRSA return? She also wants to get her belly button pierced which I think is unwise given her recent health history. Am I overreacting & what are the potential health risks?

I was prescribed Mupirocin for a non-healing nasal ulcer. I used it for about 2 days then woke up with a bad headache today from the get go. I've tried everything I can. I have taken Tylenol TWICE, Hydrocodone with Acetaminophen in it, nasal spray, a Breathe Right nasal strip (since I do have severe sinus problems.) NOTHING has worked or given any relief.

The physician could not tell whether it was a bite, but was more concerned that it might be community-based MRSA and gave me a prescription for Mupirocin. my baby had swabs and has been given anti biotics which is a nasal gel and a body wash... It is for mrsa... does that mean he will have re occurring mrsa forever or is it just that he has some of the bodies that are found in mrsa on him? Any advice please? Also surely if he has mrsa here is a high chance like myself and partner now also have it?

I have to go and have swabs done for MRSA tomorrow, has anyone had them? If so, where did they swab?

Since you are negative for MRSA then doctornee has provided appropriate advice. If the infection is bacterial - and not viral - there should have been remission within four days of treatment. Unfortunately bacterial infections often piggyback on viral infections. The only suggestion I would have is to take grapefruit juice with the antibiotic, which will lengthen the half-life in the system. I didn't mean to get you scared, but the nasal swab in hospitals is primarily for MRSA.

s not bad now but I would like to treat it on my own, and I still have some Mupirocin 2% topical cream left. Will this work? Again I would like to avoid the doctor again because I am an 18 year old girl and I'm very embaressed about this.... Please respond ASAP. THANK YOU. HM.

Upon our own research we are not sure if it could be MRSA, and after 4 days of trying her prescribed Mupirocin on my rash, it seems to have increased the bumps on my hand. At this point I'm really not to sure what it could be. I can not tell if it is increased by anything specific or something that is more serious. Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated!

My friend is still in Hospital undergoing tests for MRSA waiting for 3 negative swab results before his bypass can be carried out, as recommended by the first surgeon he saw who has since gone off sick. He has been told today by yet another Doctor that he does not need a bypass! As a bypass normally only lasts 10 years on average and his first bypass was 14 years ago, and his symptoms are the same as before, just what is going on!

I continue with pain in the left buttock muscle, as well as most of my other joints. I tested positive for MRSA (nasal swab) and also tested positive for MRSA on my right ankle "rash". I did two weeks of decolonization (cleaning sheets and clothes daily, a nasal gel, and body and hair wash). I had the nasal gel because I tested positive for holding the bacteria in my nose. So, after the nasal gel, it's still there. What's also strange is I've never passed it on to anyone that I'm aware of. Am looking for a ENT in my area to see if it is related to MRSA in the nares or from allergic reaction. This has only happened five times over last three years. I have been on a lot of antibiotics and meds that seem to have caused this reaction, but only after being diagnosed with MRSA.

MRSA? I am 65 and live alone. I don't have illnesses [arthritis & hypothyroid]. Pre-surgically [for knee replacement] I had a nasal swab for Staph. IT WAS Positive!?! It was "colonized" or whatever. But between knowing this and never in my life ever having surgery caused me debilitating anxiety. I was given ointment to apply intra-nasally 2X a day for 5 days. I cancelled my left Total knee. My family is shunning me. I feel like a leper.
