What's nice about this blog is that not only do you get the research abstracts, but they also give some sort of context or commentary as to why you might be interested or how promising they think whatever it is will be. As a bonus, if you have a question about the research, they will often answer it in the comments.
Avatar m tn I found this site the other day and it also has good articles on MS research. file:///Users/Charley/Desktop/Multiple%20Sclerosis%20Resource%20Centre.
488198 tn?1493875092 There is growing evidence however of a correlation between multiple sclerosis and vitamin D deficiency. Epidemiological studies also show that populations closer to the equator and the sun, have far fewer case of multiple sclerosis than populations closer to the north or south poles. Researchers at Oxford University have now taken this premise a step further by showing that vitamin D deficiency and therefore multiple sclerosis could have a genetic cause.
Avatar m tn my sister (24) was diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis in 2010, responded to steroid. now she suffered sudden & complete loss of vision in her left eye. she has been put on SOLUMEDROL. please suggest any available treatment modalities world over ? chances of return of vision ??
665881 tn?1248926997 ” Wynick then turned to Professor Neil Scolding who studies the use of stem cells in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Scolding provided human brain tissue affected by multiple sclerosis and, as the team predicted, galanin was also shown to be upregulated in this brain tissue. Professor Scolding said: “The results of this research are very significant and provide new insights into how the disease might be treated”.
382218 tn?1341181487 Following the diagnosis, Stewart went to Dalhousie Multiple Sclerosis Research Unit at the Halifax university, where she enrolled in a clinical drug trial and has received support and treatment. Stewart has a "relapsing-remitting" form of the disease, where she suffers episodes and then bounces back. "Sometimes, you don’t bounce back all the way," said Stewart, who looks vibrant and healthy. "I haven’t had that misfortune yet.
335728 tn?1331414412 Aglukkaq says the federal government will fund trials of the so-called liberation therapy in spite of recent studies that have cast doubt on narrowed neck veins as the primary cause of multiple sclerosis. The minister says a scientific working group established by the federal government last August has agreed unanimously that a clinical trial should proceed.
Avatar n tn Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with peripheral neuropathy, which causes tingling, and numbness, overlapping symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating neurological disorder where the disease phase is characterized by active phase and remissions. It has multiple symptoms and signs and is a diagnosis of exclusion.
1831849 tn?1383228392 ) Lastly there was an update of the ongoing research at Multiple Sclerosis Research Center of New York. A summary of this appears below. Identifying the cause of MS: We are working to understand the mechanism that triggers the inflammatory autoimmune response in MS patients. One study is examining the possible role of the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) and how it may interact with genetic susceptibility genes leading to immune abnormalities.
559187 tn?1330782856 Julie, I'm sorry you're struggling with another relapse and I hope you improve quickly and return to where you were before. I don't know what link Elaine sent, but there is a lot of research suggesting that infections can trigger relapses. For example: "Prospective study on the relationship between infections and multiple sclerosis exacerbations:" http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11960885 (click the icon on the top right to get the full text).

Avatar f tn Recent studies In 2005, researchers at the Serono Genetics Institute (SGI) achieved a major milestone in identifying and creating a register of genes involved in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). For the first time in this disease area, researchers identified 80 genes involved in the inflammatory and neuro-degenerative pathways of MS, based on a 40% genome scan comparing the genetic profile of a total of 1,800 people with MS and healthy individuals in different populations.
382218 tn?1341181487 New preclinical data presented at European Committee for Treatment and Research of Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) in Prague suggests that FTY720 (fingolimod) directly reduces neurodegeneration and enhances repair of the central nervous system (CNS) damage caused by multiple sclerosis (MS) by interacting with sphingosine-1-phosphate receptors (S1P-R) expressed on brain cells.
695915 tn?1228665952 f only 12 brains and further work needs to be done to validate the studies findings. However, if this work reflects what is actually happening in multiple sclerosis, then its implications are earth shattering: Multiple sclerosis will no longer be an autoimmune disease. A lot of text books are going to have to be rewritten. Treatments that target inflammation will not not addressing the root cause of the diease.
559187 tn?1330782856 results from the MSBase registry (http://neurologyasia.org/articles/20082_199.pdf): In the background section, they state that "A meta-analysis of all studies in the northern hemisphere suggests that relapses do occur in highest frequency in spring." They then point out some weaknesses of these studies. Their own research found that "Relapses were significantly more common in spring in the northern hemisphere (P<0.0001) and autumn in the southern hemisphere (P<0.0001).
Avatar n tn 38 Previously, various studies including the Controlled High Risk Avonex, Multiple Sclerosis Study, the Early Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis Study, the Betaseron in Newly Emerging Multiple Sclerosis for Initial Treatment Trial, the Prevention of Relapses and Disability by Interferon β-1a Subcutaneously in Multiple Sclerosis, and PreCISe trials have all helped to clarify the natural history of CIS including ON and management options for a single demyelinating episode.
147426 tn?1317265632 it makes perfect sense to me that it would have a beneficial effect in multiple sclerosis since inflammation is a hallmark of this disease; LDN is very tolerable with very few side effects (some vivid dreams, some say it causes GI distress) and it can be compounded at certain pharmacies for about 40 dollars a month; sometimes I'm tempted to just try it off-label since it's hard to find a doc to prescribe it ;)
333672 tn?1273792789 1. NARCOMS registry (North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis, a project of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, http://www.cmscnarcoms.org/). They run a Global Patient Registry in order to "facilitate multi-center research in the field of multiple sclerosis." They currently have "an active database of over 34,000 individuals who have MS." If you sign up, all you have to do to participate is fill out a survey every six months.
