Common Questions and Answers about Mri scan terminology

mri-scan

Avatar f tn Hi folks, I am trying to decipher a draft MRI report and whike it is my second MRI, it was only the first with MS protocol so the radiologist was not able to compare properly. I was hoping to see info for the c spine but it only mentions the brain scan, I assume that is because it is only a draft or the lady at my neuro's office missed it in their system. Anyway, a term came up a couple of times that I was not familiar with so I was hoping someone here could shed some light.
Avatar n tn I had an auto accident a few months back. I went to the er and had a ct scan. This is the response from the scan: No fractures or other acute abnormalities are seen. The pre-spinal soft tissues are within normal limits. Ossification or calcification seen posterior to the c3-c4 disc space level is likely ligamentous calcification although herniated calcified disc material cannot be excluded. What does this mean?
620923 tn?1452915648 a noninvasive diagnostic procedure employing an MR scanner to obtain detailed sectional images of the internal structure of the body. From ASAP: Cine MRI is taken the same way a traditional MRI is, with the addition of either a wristband or EKG leads on the patient's chest to measure the heart rate. Each time your heart beats, the cerebrospinal fluid is forced out of your brain, down toward the spine in response to the flow of blood that enters the brain with each beat.
1693254 tn?1306225514 Hi there. An infant with a big head or a rapid rate of growth of head circumference indicated hydrocephalus or water on brain, certain types of metabolic disorders, and mostly autistic spectrum disorder. While an infant having a big head is not a certain indicator of autism, it does appear to be an important signal of heightened risk for the disorder.
620923 tn?1452915648 Degeneration of the disc in Degenerative Disc Disease is also referred to as spondylosis. Spondylosis can be seen on xrays or MRI scanning of the spine as a narrowing of the normal disc space between adjacent vertebrae. The xray or MRI evidence is what confirms the diagnosis of Degenerative Disc Disease. The pain from degenerative disc disease is usually treated with heat, rest, rehabilitative exercises, and medications to relieve pain, muscle spasm, and inflammation.
Avatar m tn This was a CT scan, so the terminology used may be somewhat different. Doctors generally contact their patients quickly if something life-threatening turns up on a test. The best person to interpret the results is the doctor who prescribed the scan, so to set your mind at rest I urge you to give him or her a call. Since MS uses MRIs as diagnostic tool, not CTs, this forum is not a good place for your question. You might try the general neurology forum, but please do simply ask your doctor.
1830047 tn?1321667793 I am reading an old MRI report and to me it looks contradictory. 2-3 nonenhancing t2 hyperintense foci w/i anterior subcortical white matter. Isn't nonenhancing the op of hyperintense (also can't figure out where the *&%% this is... not on other MRI reports). Thanks and Sorry to ask about what is most likely overly simplistic but good ol' google isn't helping.
Avatar f tn I had my NL appt already and she said my MRI was unchanged compared to the one 2 years ago, however she didnt go over the scan or report at all with me so I picked it up out of curiousity. On my 1st MRI (laying down one) my measurement was 10mm. This MRI (upright) it says 1.2cm. In my opinion.. that would be considered a CHANGE! Is that something to be concerned with?!
1147176 tn?1370046134 I am not sure where to post this. Has anyone ever heard of varicose vein on brain? My mom's dr had her do an MRI because she was having episodes of seeing strange zig zag and swirling lights then she would become tired. She was also experiencing strange buzzing sounds in her head. They contacted her this morning after the mri and let her know they saw what appeared to be a very large varicose vein on her brain.
Avatar f tn They can see this on an MRI because the swelling creates an increased signal on the MRI scan.Macro trabular fracture has to do with a bone stress injury, does your pain increase with running or any kind of physical activity? Most of this is way over my head, I'll give you 2 links so you can post in the Expert Forums. And also ask your doctor to explain this report to you, if he/she can. Here's the links: http://www.medhelp.
1480451 tn?1287574385 After many failed attempts at finding the right answers, I had an MRI three days ago. I now have the results and as usual, the average person can't understand the terminology. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this for me as I don't see my Neurologist for another two weeks. I won't give the whole report but I will put in part of the Conclusion.

1260255 tn?1288654564 How many times have we been frustrated with radiologist's reports? I have an MRI scheduled for Monday and do not want another that leaves me and my PCP scratching our heads trying to understand it. I found this on the web (http://www.ajnr.org/content/27/2/455.full) from the American Journal of Neuroradiology regarding protocol for MRIs of the brain with suspected MS. I'll paste the section pertaining to the report below.
Avatar n tn I had a brain mri scan for recurrent 'auras' thought to be due to migraine. The result of the scan came back normal except for a few spots of plaques. I am 50, is this normal? I am concerned that it is indicative of early degeneration associated with dementia.
Avatar n tn They can however, detect mental illness such as scitzophreneia which i know because i was diagnosed through an MRI. The only mental illness an MRI scan able detect is an actually different brain connections than that of a normal brain. Ive had one done for mental illess! Can you describe some of your symptoms, what you feel and how often yolou feel it? I know your question is based on needing to know where to get a private MRI scan, which i am unsure of!!

Avatar f tn Is it necessary to have more than one MRI scan done. I have only ever had the one scan, 15 yrs ago which was when I was given my official dx, despite having several episodes/relapses since. Initially told I had RRMS now being told I have SPMS with relapses.
763362 tn?1236624790 I have been referred to Physio and had an initial assesment where the consultant said that it looks like Degenerative Disc Disease, he said the only way to determine this better is by having an MRI scan, on going back to my G.P.
