Mri scan metal in body

Common Questions and Answers about Mri scan metal in body

mri-scan

Avatar m tn You should always inform the operator of any metal in your body for an MRI scan. These work on a different principle and use very large magnets which can seriously heat up metal in the body, causing tissue damage.
Avatar f tn http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_resonance_imaging The above link tells you pretty much everything you didn't want to know about MRIs. I had a brain MRI one time, I had to be sedated because I was afraid of it, they even have a little mirror in there so you can see out of it, sort of claustrophobic in the machine, and they had a microphone and radio in there so I could talk to the techs. When the machine started up, it was VERY loud, surprised me, kind of made a bumping racket.
Avatar m tn MRI uses a magnet. The image is much clearer and via magnet vs. sound wave. MRI is good for viewing soft tissue and organ, and if you get one with contrast (Gallium), vascularization can be seen. MRI is good for determining size and shape of the liver. You can also see lesions (carcinoma) on MRI. A radiologist can determine a rough density from an MRI which is good for determining fibrousness of the liver. Cirrhotic nodules can also be visualized via MRI.
Avatar f tn If the metal you have in your body is not close to the pancreas, they can do a CAT scan, which is radiation like X-rays rather than a magnetic field of MRI, so metal doesn't goof the whole thing up. They can also do a needle biopsy, too, the CAT scan guides the surgeon to the correct place, but the amount of tissue that needle can take is sometimes too small to be sure if the mass is benign, but if it shows up as a cancer, well, they will likely want to do surgery and so forth.
Avatar f tn m assuming they used metal surtures/staples during removal. Two years ago, I had a MRI scan for pain in my knees. Since then I had pain in my right side just below my rib cage. It was an acute pain immediately after the MRI scan. There is still residual pain to this day. Is it possible that something tore open? If so, can this be the cause of sharp pains in my mid back that the doctors have not been able to pinpoint after X-rays?
Avatar f tn The hardware is normally made from either stainless steel or more likely titanium. Nither is a "ferrious" metal. Only Ferrious metal reacts to magnetic fields. No way an MRI Pulls on hardware that is used in your body. If it did, it would rust!!!!....LOL. It's amazing what our head will do to us when we are in that tube.....................
Avatar f tn I know in germany they have a scanner to scan people for dangerous stuff and that if you are pregnant, you cannot go through it and you have to have a body search instead.
482441 tn?1235230458 You will be asked a lot of questions by the MRI tech so need to clear this up. It's important that you find out what material was used, but that shouldn't be too difficult. I've got loads of metal in one elbow and one foot. It's titanium, which doesn't cause MRI problems. If they used metal on you it's likely to be that too. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Does anyone have experience of metal implants for a broken jaw (1983),inhibit a MRI scan being performed to diagnose Chiari
Avatar f tn First step is usually part of the informed consent process and involves disclosing any metal you may have in your body, and the professionals go from there. I know our questionnaires prior to each MRI ask about tattoos (metal in some inks), angle-grinding, gunshot wounds, metal medical implants, etc. Not to say those discount being able to have an MRI automatically, just that the radiologist needs to know about them in order to make the call.
Avatar f tn ggreg's info may be overly cautious. If at all possible, you should get the implant card or operative notes that can identify specifically what aneurysm clips were placed (manufacturer and model) because there are two different concerns with these... The greatest concern is that the clips are made from a (ferro)magnetic material, in which case they can twist and pull near the powerful magnetic field of an MRI. This can be fatal and should not be understated as a risk.
Avatar f tn I have MS, diagnosed in 1992 with a dozen lesions on my brain. In 2005 the MRI report said to many lesions to count! I just want to know why all of a sudden I'm experiencing this burning sensation??? I'm afraid for the next brain scan??
Avatar n tn You would think it would be detected being metal. Working with strong magnets, an MRI scan can be dangerous with stents, it can even make them very hot. Before an MRI the technician has to be told the type of stent/s in the patient, which included the manufacture, model etc. Also the size has to be known. The technician then adjusts the sensitivity of the MRI scanner so no danger to the stent is presented. Maybe the scanner was adjusted to a level where it was unable to detect the stent.
1257808 tn?1322762215 Even if you think the metal implant is compatible with the MRI machine, you must let the MRI personnel know in order to ensure this metal is compatible with the MRI. If it is not compatible you cannot get the MRI done and need to seek an opinion about the urgency of MRI considering the implant. Take care.
Avatar m tn I have back pain and need to do MRI. Is there is something in MRI cause/harm in eye? Do i need to close my eye during MRI?
Avatar f tn How necessary is it to have a CT head scan for having one possible simple partial seizure two months ago? I saw a neurologist who suggested I have the scan, but he did admit another neurologist might have said it was okay to wait and see if it happened again. He left the decision up to me. I'm worried about the x-rays of a CT scan, having had plenty of x-rays for other procedures in the past. If I have another seizure or whatever it was, I would definitely have a scan.
3072999 tn?1356414732 I was told te morning after my surgery I would be taken for an MRI, however, while I was in the hospital I never had an MRI. I was in the hospital for 48 hours for my surgery so maybe they didn't do the MRI because I was doing so well? Well I am gonna assume that eventually they will do a post-surgery MRI, right? Any ideas as to whether they will order one and about how post-surgery they do?
Avatar n tn did you have ct scan or an mri?mri maybe needed if not been done, there are conditions that can only be detected on an mri.
Avatar f tn I think you need to tell the technician before your MRI. They should know if you have any metal in your body because and MRI can move metal objects, this is from what I've read anyway. I'm wondering why your Dr doesn't want the tech to know? That doesn't make any sense. If it were me in your situation I would call my Dr and ask why he doesn't want anyone to know and tell him that it may not be safe for you to even have an MRI if you have metal in your body.
Avatar f tn Sometimes older kids would come by and pry the lids off the barrels and throw the sludge at us. This would end up in a sludge free-for-all. I have many neurological manifestations with normal MRI, CT Scan, blood tests, etc. I do not however, think I have been tested for heavy metal poisoning. All the docs I have been to say it's just Fibromyalgia or histrionics. Could this past exposure be to blame for my symptoms? Thank your for your consideration.
Avatar f tn Hello, how well can an X-Ray display what is going on in the body? I presume it only shows fractures and such, but I am wonderign if there is any way it can show growths? Thanks!
155056 tn?1333638688 I have to fill in a huge questionnarie that asks me things like, have I ever worked around metal, is there any chance I could have metal in my eye, have I ever had abdominal surgery, do I have a pace maker, do I have any metal in my body that I am not aware of. Because I fill out that I have had abdominal surgery, they ask you about a hundred more questions, and I've always told them I have metal clips.
Avatar m tn I never had pinguecula prior to the MRI, and did not "age or have too much sun exposure" overnight. I have 24 hour urine tested positive for gadolinium retention 5 months post MRI. Now that urine testing for Gd is available, more and more people are realizing their mysterious and undiagnosed symptoms are Gd related. Please educate yourself on the yellow plaque (similar to pinguecula) caused by gadolinium and referred to as a symptom of NSF.
Avatar m tn 3. Suggestion of cerebellar tonsillar ectopia. Attention to this area on brain MRI is suggested in the clinical context of headaches.
987762 tn?1671273328 The MRI The purpose of a MRI or magnetic resonance imaging machine, is to harmlessly work out what internally is physically wrong with you, without involving exploratory surgery. MRIs have 3 types: conventional, open bore and fully open. In an conventional MRI, a long toroidal (Doughnut-shaped) electromagnet supplies the electromagnetic force, and the subject is put through a long 'tunnel', where a full-body scan is supplied.
Avatar m tn Well, very rarely the radiowaves used in MRI may causes increased sensitivity in a few individuals and this associated with increased blood flow to the region nay be responsible for the discomfort. Adjusting the intensity of the microwaves may help alleviate the symptoms. Hope the information is helpful. Take care!
900662 tn?1469390305 A quick search turns up virtually nothing about overheating in an MRI unless you have metal in your body. Even a patch (like nicotine or morphine) may have a metal backing that causes overheating, but I'm thnking that wasn't your situation. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor - I would love to know the official explanation. And also tell the doctor about your experience - this place should not get any more referrals until they correct the shortcomings.
