Avatar f tn Have been clean of morphine and hydocodone for 12 days. I am 82 and these were given me for scoliosis and COPD. I decided to cold turkey after a couple of years of this and am having bad headaches. Other wd symptoms seem to have started to let up fairly well. I took restlegs prep last night, twice. first time for me, could that cause stomach upset along with more headaches?
1756387 tn?1312563120 I have tried around 6 times to cold turkey from morphine 50-100 mg a day and it has been different each time. This time is very odd though. I feel extremely violent and anxious like I could literally hurt someone if they said the wrong thing. I was a huge huge witch to my husband who subsequently has left to run errands. I am feeling suicidal and was looking up ways to commit suicide.
Avatar f tn in earlier forums you have suggested carbonated beverages both cola and white soda are unhealthy. Does this apply to quinine water? My neurologist has suggested for cramping relief.
Avatar m tn My husband is WD from codiene and some morphine sulfate(15mg..unknown how many tablets). He is doing excellant as he has been taking pain medication for his back for 20 years. 454371 tn?1221297385 I have thrice detoxed from morphine due to a back injury, then shingles virus, then another back injury. One week off morphine today. I found that drinking gatorade for potassium and eating bananas for magnesium helped somewhat. But I needed a heating pad, a muscle pain cream like Ben Gay, and a $100 heated vibrating leg massager (short-term painful) to beat the cramps. The cramps caused sleeplessness and anxiety in me.
Avatar f tn hi, and welcome, i am also in the uk, i know what your going through, but it will certainly be worth it to get your life back, to help restless legs, take hot baths with epsom salts in, drink tonic water, its the quinine in it that helps, sounds odd but eating bananas helps, contains potassium, you will feel emotional, seems to be part of the withdrawal, get some valerian root for relaxation, sounds silly, but what were you taking??

In the 2007 report the FDA said, "Quinine is associated with a variety of serious adverse events, some of them potentially fatal." Drugs.
Avatar m tn I thought Quinine the drug was taken off the market in the US? Is the quinine in the soda the same that was in the Quinine drug I got for leg cramps years ago? Quinine used to be a prescription drug, to have it in a tonic water would be great but is this possible, I mean I know it's possible but I don't think they're one and the same.
179856 tn?1333547362 m reading about risks associated with quinine. How much is too much? How much quinine is in tonic? What are the side effects? Should I stop drinking tonic water? A. Quinine has been used medicinally to ward off malaria since the 17th century. The normal dose to treat malaria is 648 mg every eight hours for a week. A glass of tonic has roughly 20 mg, so you can see that there is a big difference.

Avatar f tn They said the FDA made them discontinue using real Quinine in 1985. What they call Quinine now is artificial and used just for flavor but not made from tree bark like it used to be. So drink all you like. I enjoy it on the rocks with lime, all the time and I'm not sure but it might help stop my legs from cramping!
Avatar n tn In recent times, the only medication that has been widely used to prevent, and sometimes also to treat, cramps is quinine. Quinine acts by decreasing the excitability of the muscles. It has also been shown to be effective in many, but not all, scientific studies. However, quinine also causes birth defects and miscarriages. It has also occasionally caused hypersensitivity reactions and a deficiency of platelets, which are the blood components responsible for clotting.
2059648 tn?1439766665 Actually I drink tonic water occasionally for the leg cramps as it containes quinine. Quinine has had some medicinal use in reducing leg cramps. However quinine has it's own problems so I do not drink it very often.

1801781 tn?1461629469 The pain of leg cramps can range from mild to excruciating and one of the most effective ways to deal with leg cramps is by taking quinine sulfate. A licensed physician must prescribe full strength quinine sulfate but there are over the counter medications that have trace amounts quinine sulfate in them. These trace amounts of quinine sulfate are combined with vitamins to produce an over the counter supplement that can be used as a treatment for restless leg syndrome. Hope this helps! S.
446891 tn?1205259587 A search for "quinine retina" quickly turned up lots of references, but they all refer to toxic levels. For example, http://www.emedmag.com/html/pre/tox/0101.asp refers to someone who ingested thirty 300mg tablets, for a total of 9000 mg. It says that tonic water has 2mg of quinine per ounce, meaning you'd have to drink 35 gallons (133 liters) to get that much quinine from tonic water.
Avatar n tn The spasms are usually due to either magnesium deficiency or calcium deficiency. They are exacerbated by caffeine drinks, which deplete calcium in muscle tissue. The first step is to drink a glass or two of milk every day or take calcium pills. If this doesn't work try Hylands Leg Cramp Pills (containing Quinine) or prescription quinine sulfate pills.
Avatar n tn I have done some research and i believe Quinine dihydrochloride, Quinine sulfate is an additive to carbonated drinks which may case such problems as an allergic reaction. I went to the pharmacist and essentially by drinking carbonated drinks poisons my body, like food poisoning would!
Avatar f tn Tonic water works wonders. It contains quinine which takes the problem right away. There are alot of carbs in tonic though so if that is an issue use diet tonic water. I hate the taste and have to hold my nose when I drink it but its worth it.
498948 tn?1253055841 A couple of people have mentioned the use of quinine enriched water to help ward off leg and foot cramps but when I google quinine its actually a malaria drug that is contra-indicated with other drugs. I don't want to mess up my treatment as I've just passed the half way mark. Does anyone have any advice or experiences they want to relate?
