morphine itching

About 1 month ago my pain management doctor increased my dosage of morphine sulfate from 10 gm to 30 mg (1 every 12 hours). Shortly after I began taking the 30mg morphine sulfate, I started to develop a slight rash. Over the last week, the rash has become much worse and a real problem. I've been taking over the counter benadryl tabs to get some relief from the rash which is helping a little to relief the itching and rash.

Hi, welcome to the forum, your history is suggestive of that you are having drug allergy to morphine. Some patients have reported to have itching (in more than 10%), rash and development of hives. The possibilities for allergy are due to presence of Phenanthrene in opioids. You can even develop hypersensitivity reactions to other phenanthrene derivative opioid agonists (codeine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, levorphanol, oxycodone, oxymorphone).

Which is strange as Tramadol is an anolouge of codeine. Other than Morphine (no itching at all)I have not been prescribed any other narcotic meds so can't really say. Sorry that I can't offer anything more useful, but it might be worth talking to your doctor about antihistamines (similar to the stuff you get to prevent hay fever). I am sure someone else on the forum will know more.

I just found out my mom n sister r chewing morphine patches. I am really scared for them. Does anyone know what it does n how u act if u chew them they have been actin really diffrent lately is that why?

She was put under to have her jaw wired and was given a slow release morphine shot as well. Is this just her coming off the medications or should I be concerned?

I have got to understand why after about 8 hours, the 'itches' kick in. It is extremely annoying. I take Benedil for the 'itches' and it seems to stop them sometimes. Can anyone tell me what causes the 'itches' and what is the best effect to counteract this? My morphine is only 15mg and I try t take it every 12 hours but when the "itches" kick in, (usually about 8 hours later), I take another and it seems to stop.

I am a woman in my early 20s, and I have recently found red itchy bumps on the back of my arms. It started in a cluster right under my right shoulder, now it is spreading down both my arm and my back. I don't have and food allergies, nor am I allergic to any insect or plants. The only things I'm allergic to are cat dander, dust, and morphine, there are no cat's at my house, there's dust but I don't think that can do this to my arm, and I haven't taken any morphine.

Just in case you didn't notice (I miss it all the time,) this post is really old. If you have questions about the patch, you may do better to post your own question on it. I will say I have not had any side effects from the patch but I didn't have the same side effects to the other meds you did. (I did have that itching from Vicodin and was told to never take it again. Morphine also didn't work for me due to side effects other than itching.

Hello, Urticaria pigmentosa is usually found in infants but it may affect adults also and produces lesions and intense itching. If you rub the lesions, hives may develop.

So to make a long story short I am itching like a mother and havent taken one today and I am not planning on taking them anymore I want to throw them away. Do you think the itching is from the done/roxi combo? I have no rash so I am stumped.

I developed sever itching august 8th 2011, all over my body, face,legs,private area,head,arms,hands, it starts fromt he tie I wake up till I fall asleep. it feels like someone is rubbing a broom made with hay across my skin, the itching is very intense, very uncomfortable right noe i'm taking hydrodroxine oral, and famodadine oral and i've was given steroid shot and oral meds that did not help.

I am having a hard time getting below the 37 mcg but more importantly, is there anything I can do for the itching? Also, he is thinking of trying Morphine or Methadone because he says they are easier to wean off of. Any thoughts? At this point, it feels like the pain is gone and I just want to be done with this.

29th I fell at home and broke my leg so badly I had to have surgery. While in the hospital, they had me on a morphine pump for several days and then they put me on percocet. I have alot of allergies but I never had any problems with oxycodone. Shortly after I came home the itching started. I'm taking benedryl along with it but it doesn't seem like it's working. I don't know if I should just cope with the itching or call the doctor. This is just ridiculous!

It's called formication. It's a neurological condition that makes people think bugs are crawling around under their skin. But they aren't, it's a neurological condition. Like untreated diabetes or kidney disease can cause itchy prickliness, I think there will be a physiological diagnosis for what causes the sensation of bugs crawling under the skin. I don't think it will be actual teeny little bugs that can't be seen in testing.

With my 1st born I got an epidural and I was looking into different pain relief options for this pregnancy. Any of you got morphine instead of an epidural and how was your experience?

Hi yes it is normal behavior for Morphine, when you first start it your on top of the world then comes irritation and depression and even nightmares for some. How much is he on? How long? and dose he want to quit?

Well, first of all i know what i would tell your husband. Who cares what he wants or doesn't like. Look at the mess you are in. Sounds like you need to go and speak with a doctor and explain that you want to get off the morphine. Don't forget to tell him about this husband also who is obviously causing you alot of anxiety.

I pretty much thought it had something to do with the morphine. Any advice? He needs it for his back. My view is morphine is probably better than any other of the narcotic analgesics because it is the most natural and has been around for centuries. I certainly would not want him on oxycontin or fentanyl. Is Opana ER any better? Need advice from doctor preferably or someone who has an idea what they are talking about regarding this matter.

My husband is addicted to Morphine. I have never done any type of drug and I really don't know what to do to help. Every time I think I know what is going on I find out something else he has lied about. At first it was just taking the pills, then it was crushing the pills. Now I'm finding needles and spoons everywhere. He claims that he gets the pills down to liquid form and puts them in the needle and squirts it in his mouth. I just don't believe him anymore.

I am going to go cold turkey on tuesday from 100mg morphine, been on them about 6 to 8 weeks. feeling sick when I dont take them and not able to take off time for detox and types for detox?

After running the gamut of pain medications in an effort to find some relief from the constant, chronic pain I endure from spondylolisthesis, I've been prescribed morphine tablets at 10 mgs per tab. I'm still getting no relief from the pain. Should I ask my GP for a higher dosage?

Morphine must be okay for the liver because that's what they used when I was in the ICU following my liver transplant. Be VERY careful with morphine. I was on it for 7 days and went wacky with hallucinations of all kinds.
