Avatar m tn (Focus) So, 2 nights after his request, they gave him 1mg of morphine and he has now been in, what seems to be a deep sleep (2 days later). He is now in palliative care in our local hospital and everything is very peaceful. Nurses, spiritual visitors, aids, including the environment. I am very happy so far that this is the path he chose. My question is, on 1mg of morphine every 4-5 hours, and nothing else, how long can we expect?
Avatar f tn She was not willing to go for chemo sessions. Hence we opted for palliative care. She has been vomiting whatever she is eating for the past day. The doctor has suggested not to give her morphine as it would increase the bout. The medicine given to her to control her vomit isn't working. What should we do? Also what pain medication should we give her now that morphine is not an option. Please help.
194555 tn?1264286923 Depending on his lung cancer stage, someone should make a decision whether he treats issues or moves to palliative care. Palliative care means heading into hospice and starting a morphine drip or other care meant to comfort him. I personally feel that cardiac mets are very painful and a not a good way to die. If the patient is strong enough, there is a procedure called a pericardial window that will drain this fluid into his abdomen and relieve the pressure on the heart.
Avatar n tn too much morphine can result in death. I would advise you to call your pharmacist for information - they would be able to give you pharmaceutical information that would clarify this situation. I am sorry for you loss and the experience around it.
Avatar n tn Untreated ovarian cancer can cause many different problems ranging from blockage in the intestine and inability to eat, to kidney failure from dehydration and compression on the kidneys. I would suggest recruiting a palliative care specialist or an oncologist who does palliative care and can help her and the family manage problems as they arise.
Avatar n tn Dear J, thanks, Mom has been hurting in her hips and breast so I reminded her we can get palliative medicines. She said it may have finally come to that. She may consent to going to the doctor soon!. She doesn't want any surgery but will be will to take pain meds at this late stage. It's so hard to abide by their wishes and to try to tell them what to do. I give her the options and go by what she wants. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn Palliative care is an delicate approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with terminal illness. Sometimes it is difficult to determine if one should take an aggressive approach (i.e., giving as many treatments as possible even if futile) vs. just trying to make the patient comfortable toward the end (i.e., giving more pain meds). In an ideal situation, the patient's wishes should be followed.
1686743 tn?1306005451 For the last year I have been taking15 mg Morphine2 times a day, and 5mg Oxycodone HCI For pain in back and hips, and knee. At this dosage I have been getting some relief.Could one say that I'm chemically dependent. I'm 6 ft tall and 172 lbs. What is the suggested dosage for 61 yr old? I just had surgery in my chest and the pain level is 10 by times 10. they increased the oxy to 10 mg every 4 hrs and the Morphine 3 times a day 30 mg a day. with little effect.
Avatar f tn I am a Hospice/Palliative care Registered Nurse. As our "baby boomers" age, we have a need for basic knowledge in how to know when to consider Palliative and/or Hospice Care. Professionals like myself, a Hospice Nurse has the better knowledge as to the hands on assistance that enrollment in a Palliative Care Program or a Hospice Program can give.

Avatar n tn Morphine mg to mg, (administered orally) has about 1/2 the analgesic effectiveness of oxycodone. So 30mg of morphine would be euqal to around 15mg of oxy. Did you tell the doc that the oxy 5mg. wasnt taking care of the pain? Other than that,I cant imagine why he would "up your meds" just out of the blue.
438514 tn?1305734140 I remember reading that there's a difference between palliative care and hospice. Palliative care offers pain relief and life prolonging care (such as special nutritional needs) even if they can't offer a cure. It can be given at any time during a disease. Hospice care is usually only given if a person has less than 6 months left. I found this portion of a definition comparing the two: Palliative care is NOT the same as hospice care.
Avatar f tn Ok first I was a kind of person who wanted so much out of life. I bought my first home in my early 30 .happy with my life. Then one day I got sick had ovarian cancer. Avatar f tn On the other hand, when my mom had ovca we had to keep her sedated. She had no quality of life without the morphine. When the morphine was reduced she became very restless and was in obvious distress. Because of that we used the morphine as palliative sedation to give her peace. You can try to reduce the medication and always go back to it if it does not give her added quality time. I wish peace for all of you at this horrible time.
1674921 tn?1304177675 I am only allowed to take 4 Tylenol daily - no aspirin or Advil. I can have morphine should I want it, but no aspirin.
653169 tn?1303446369 I also wanted to add that if you feel that this medication is not right for you after doing the research do not take it. Call your doctor and ask for other options.
Avatar f tn The most recent issue of Consumer Reports, which is about over-the-counter drugs, going to the hospital, etc., says that "palliative care" is a specialty that is NOT restricted to end-of-life or hospice care. It suggests that patients in the hospital who need better pain management should ask about palliative care. There are separate specialists for it.
Avatar n tn If you take 300mg of morphine a day ,how much fyntenal should i need in a patch?????
210982 tn?1280983895 Yes although dosage and frequency of usage does matter. In my experience morphine, high dosage oxycontin and methadone are the most effective (and the most addicting) pain killers.
Avatar f tn As the ability to eat, drink and talk declines, advise your palliative care nurses of this and they will work through your Primary Care Physician to increase the Dex steroid dosage accordingly. This will help temporarily. It is important that the patient take not only the preventive anti-seizure meds but the carer must have the valium derivative liquid handy so that you can stop a seizure in its tracks.
