I had several tests and it was discovered several months later that I suffered with spasm of the sphincter of oddi. The specialist at the time told me there was nothing he could do for me and I would just have to manage the pain but assured me that it would reduce over time. 10 years down the track I still have episodes about 3 times a year they come in clusters I will have 2to 3 episodes over a week at a time I need pethideine at these times.

Narcotic meds like morphine can raise the pressure in the common bile duct and sphincter and if someone is already having problems with the sphincter it can cause unbearable pain. During a HiDA scan morphine is never used. You may want to check into sphincter of Oddi dysfunction (SOD).

I do not know the answer to this but I did get heart palpitations when my gallbladder started going bad. I had the surgery and now am left with sphincter of oddi dysfuntion and still have the palpitations. I have had a negative cardiac workup as well. I do agree you will probably have to get it out to avoid your pain.

Ok...I have been constipated this whole time (I go occasionally). Now I'm hungry, but sometimes I feel full and nauseated. Right when I eat I feel like I have to go to the bathroom (cramping sometimes like diarrhea) but I can barely go. I see a specialist on the 17th and maybe they can help some. I'm sure my sphincter of oddi is back but these other problems make me concerned about my pancreas. It's all stressing me out and giving me anxiety.

I'm not trying to be difficult, but a HIDA scan cannot deterine SOD. SOD is not a blocked bile duct. It's when the Sphincter of Oddi muscle spasms and contracts and does not allow the pancreas to release all of the good stuff it needs to like bile and insulin. It's very painful when these spasms occur, just as a blocked bile duct is. An ERCP will clear a blocked bile duct however.

I had my sphincter of oddi widened a few years ago because it was narrowed. I was causing horrible spasms. After it was widened....pain was gone. My question is this. Can a sphinter of oddi have to be widened again in time? Thank you.

I have sphincter of oddi dysfunction and biliary issues......I have never heard of this! Where did you hear about this?

It certainly sounds like this is impacting your life significantly. As an aside, morphine is the worst narcotic for this problem as it causes the most spasm of the sphincter of Oddi. I don't understand allthe doom and gloom of a sphincterotomy. There is a small risk of pancreatitis but this is an endoscopic procedure performed on a daily basis. If the diagnoss is solid it should help you significantly.

With SOD, the thing that normally happens is that the common bile duct or the sphincter of Oddi spasm shut and this results in a backup of bile and pancreatic fluids in the common bile duct. When that happens, there's a 'spill-over' of enzymes and other components in the liver and pancreas into the blood stream.

eHealthMe, enter Sphincter of oddi etc. and you will see 2 pages of drugs and fits. that may interact negatively. I was taking Hidrocodein for a ruptured disk and discovered that this was a BAD idea! This pain when it hits is really terrible. You mention that an anti spasmodic seemed to help, should I try that do you think? You are right in saying most Drs. don't have a clue about this. There is a rare thing called Sphincter of oddi dysfuction. It mimicks gallbladder pain and often causes your gallbladder to slowly lose function because your sphincter spasms and backs up the bile causing damage to your gallbladder. When I had mine out last year I hurt even worse and started having attacks of severe pain in recovery . It was because they had me on morphine in recovery. It turns out Morphine causes severe pain of the sphincter because it increases the pressure.

I was watching tv when I say this program about sphincter of oddi dysfunction and I got online and reseached it and it sure enough sounds like what I have. I am just looking for other people who have this to see what I can do. I have not had an attack in a few months thank God for that. PLEASE, CAN SOMEONE HELP ME FIND A GASTROENTEROLIGIST THAT CAN HELP ME MANAGE THE PAIN OF SPHINCTER OF ODDI DYSFUNCTION. There are no specialists in this area who can do manometry of my liver. In 2002, Dr. Bailey at Duke Univ. made three attempts in a period of nine months to access the bile duct and measure the pressure inside my liver. He was unable to do the manometry and I developed a severe case of pancreatitis.

I have been reading thru all the comments on Sphincter of Oddi and it is frustrating to see so many people having the same symtoms for years I saw as far back as 1999 and yet there is still so little help out there for people with this problem.

After seeing several different doctors, I met with a GI doctor who told me that I had Type III Sphincter of Oddi dysfunction and scheduled me for a endoscopic sphincterotomy. The surgery went fine-he said when he measured the pressure that I had a pressure of 120 and that he "filleted" the muscle. When I left the hospital, I continued to have pressure in my epigastric region for a few weeks, then it finally eased up. Now it is back. My questions are: What is the next step?

Do you have SOD and LUQ pain? What does your doctor think about sphincterotomy of the pancreatic sphincter? Have you ever had pancreatitis?

( You may want to look into the disease sphincter of oddi dysfunction. I have similar symptoms and my Gastroenterologist thinks this is what I have. It may not be what you have, but you can maybe ask your doctor about it. I can tell you I have similar symptoms as far as upper right and middle upper abdominal pain where it feels like the only thing that kind of relieves it is laying down, when I get the pressure off.

I was in and out of the hospital since then with clueless doctors, finally leading to one doctor who thought I had sphincter of oddi and perforned an ERCP. I got acute pancreatitis from the procedure and ended up with a week long hospital stay. I wish I could say this procedure worked for me however it has not. I am now in the process of trying medications, but I am onto my 5th one and nothing has worked so far.

I feel like it is one surgery after another without a clear answer on anything. I am living on pain meds at night just to get any kind of sleep. I am a 44 year old registered nurse, who for the last 8 months have had right upper quadrant pain, sometimes radiating round to the back and bouts of heavy nausea. Previously in May I was diagnosed with tiny scattered ulcers from the stomach through to the small intestine, this was thought to be related to the anti-imflammatory's I had been taking for acute back pain previously experience in mid Feb to mid March. This problem is cuurently resolved.

the sphincterectomy that the gastroentorologist perform is just a basic cut of the sphincter of oddi this does not correct the problem. Now my sphincter is going to be sawn open. The name of the surgery is long. I will be in the hospital for a minimum of 3 days but it could be up to 5 days. I will let you know how I feel afterwards.

When attacks of pain cause considerable disturbance with life activities, a decision has to be made whether to cut the sphincter (sphincterotomy), during ERCP. When sphincter of Oddi manometry has confirmed that the pressures are high, sphincterotomy gives good relief in most patients (but not all). The performance of sphincterotomy carries a risk of complications, such as bleeding and perforation, in addition to pancreatitis.

Certain narcotics can cause a spasm of the common bile duct or sphincter of Oddi. Please check with your GI person for the possible use of specific muscles 'relaxation' meds to see if that will give you some relief.
