Avatar f tn If the oxy stopped working as well, i switched to morphine at the same strength and vice versa. I have been only on MSContin and Dilaudid for 5 years now. I lowered my pain medications drastically over a matter of about 10 years.
Avatar f tn Methadone per se, does not damage the heart, however long term use of methadone does slightly increase the mortality from heart disease. The etiology (and reasoning) is as follows. (1) Methadone affects respirations. A person on methadone will have a slighty-less that optimal resting breathing rate. The body, unfortunately uses breathing to maintain acid-base balance by blowing off carbon dioxide, Thus, the long term methadone user is likely to have a blood PH that varies from the ideal.

Avatar n tn Blood pressure and observations should be taken every ten minutes and note made of an increase in systolic blood pressure, reduction of the heart rate (bradycardia), and irregular respirations, particuliarly fast and rapid respirations. These patients go to the head of the triage line. Start a line with D5W on KVO. Hospital protocols vary, but often a steroid is injected through the IV line. Small burr holes may be drilled in the skull to relieve the pressure.
Avatar n tn Yes, opiates cause respiratory depression. In large doses they slow respirations and you can stop breathing. That is why people OD on them.Whats going on? Can we help any?
Avatar f tn My dad answered the door, got dizzy, then fell to the point where he went into respiratory distress and had agonal respirations. I thought he died in front of me. He has CHF, biventricular failure, aortal backflow, a-fib and has a pacemaker w/ defibulator. I called 911 because I thought he was dying and figured his defib kicked in because after a minute he regained consciousness. I'm getting zero answers beyond "low blood pressure/orthostatic hypotension".

Avatar f tn The problem is that both medications affect respirations, and the degree to which that takes place depends upon the dose and the toleration of them opiate. In a worst-case situation, you go to sleep, stop breathing, and never wake up.
Avatar m tn would I be considered short of breath if I am simply aware of increased respirations when going from sitting/lying to standing, or walking on a level field. Is just the awareness of breathing cosidered shortness? Or are we talking, one would need to sit down or stop their activity, have open mouthed breathing and take a while to rest before being normal again.
356518 tn?1322263642 However I have tried Morphine, Methadone and Fentanyl and have not been able to tolerate any of them. Morphine interfered dramatically with my respirations, Methadone did not touch my pain levels and I have a severe allergy to the adhesive of the Fentanyl patch. My physician will not prescribe Oxycodone for any of her patients so I am "stuck" with hydrocodone. I also tried Tramadol and that was less effective than Ibuprofen. When I add Diazapam to the Hydrocodone it does help.
Avatar n tn a runny nose and ears are clear of fluid. Lungs have crackling sound and coughing and wheezing is present.
Avatar m tn The answer is complicated. If a patient has diabetes, the body goes to an alternate means of decreasing blood sugar levels. This can cause what are called "Kusmal respirations", which are similar to an asthmatic attack, and occasionally misdiagnosed as such. You need an evaluation for diabetes and a test known as the A1C.
Avatar f tn The anesthesia puts a person to sleep, and as a side effect depresses the respirations. If you are on methamphetamines, and anesthesia, if the stimulant wears off you may be under too much sedative. In any event, it complicates the calculation of the correct doseage. Too much of certain sedatives will cause diminishing of surgical "landmarks", so the idea is to use as little as necessary.
Avatar f tn I felt like my heart was beating really hard and fast. My breathing was very rapid and hard. I called my midwife and she sent me to the hospital. They did all kinds of tests and all of those turned out normal. After a few hours of rest and elevating my legs, I had no more crazy respiratory episodes. They said I'm a medical mystery but I was stable. They sent me home with a 24 hour halter monitor to monitor my heart.
Avatar m tn But often, even if they suffer anxiety, it may be out of sync with their nature. I had great anxiety (and panic attacks) and was treated like a neurotic. But I knew something physical was wrong. It turned out to be high cortisol.
Avatar n tn When I found out I was pregnant (@ 6 wks) I was taking tyl/codeine and xanax on a daily basis and I quit cold turkey and I now have a healthy 16 month old son. The motivation to quit is so much stronger when you have a baby growing inside you!! Congratulations!
Avatar m tn Normally the anxiety resolves itself within a few weeks but this time it has persisted and continues on. Could it be caused by the morphine? This is my thought but the pharmacist said he didn't think it was. Also my doctor is suggesting 8 tylenol a day to replace the morphine. I am so skeptical of it being adequate though I know I can manage less than the 60 mg of morphine now. What are your thoughts?
Avatar f tn If such a person is removed from the ventilator, then his heart and lung will stop functioning and he will not have life any longer. Also such a person cannot just be maintained on oxygen. IV fluids will also be required for energy for body metabolism. Please discuss with the treating physician. Take care!
Avatar n tn I am not sure what the circumstances are that surround your situation, but I do know that strokes are caused by a blood clot or a brain bleed. My mom just had 2 strokes and they actually gave her a morphine pump for her head because it hurt so bad. I do not think they would have done that if there was a chance it would cause more strokes. Keep doing your research though, I guess you never know!
Avatar n tn Hello, I occasionally have episodes of feeling like I'm on the verge of fainting. Also have episodes of dizziness. When I get these episodes I go to the ER and get checked. EKG's, VS, bloodwork are normal. I've also had a nuclear stress test, and echocardigram fairly recently. Also an MRI, and MRA has been done a couple years back which again were normal. The physician's feel this is stress related. I'm pretty familiar with the "fight or flight response".
Avatar n tn she is lethargic with a headache. blood pressure 104/72. heart rate 118/min. respirations 30/min. flushed and feels warm and dry. urine output is over 800ml in the morning. glucose is 310 mg/dl. what is happening with this woman??
1751415 tn?1315069443 Hello! I wanted to thank you for the information on Morphine. I neglected to mention that it was not the hospice nurse but the nurse from the nursing home. We will mention this. I know that they use a Fentanyl (hope I'm spelling it correctly) patch and morphine by mouth. They were giving him the patch with Vicodin but I guess because his pain was increasing they switched to Morphine. We are due to have a conference this week. Again, thank you!
Avatar f tn I would be on the safe side and go get checked out. Morphine is a really strong drug especially if your pregnant.hope it all turns out good.
