Avatar n tn Why are you considering taking milk thistle? Do you have liver disease? Milk thistle hasn’t really shown much in the way of clinical evidence of being effective for treating liver injury.
Avatar m tn One of the most advised and respected ways to accomplish this goal is with the herb milk thistle. Despite decades of studies demonstrating milk thistle's ability to protect and support the liver, skeptics have always doubted herbal medicine's potential. New research released from Columbia University Medical Center gives those with Hepatitis C one more reason to supplement with this amazing herb.
Avatar f tn I think there have been animal studies with milk thistle where it was shown to have protected the liver against certain toxins.Milk thistle alone would probably not help an aweful lot (my opinion),you would be better combining it with lifestyle changes such as abstaining from alcohol, exercise, diet and maybe even treatment-depending on what your doctor recommends. Avatar m tn I've heard of a few studies for liver health and milk thistle.. but honestly, I wouldn't start doing anything yet until your doctor runs tests. I should mention too, that milk thistle can cause allergic reactions in some people (make sure you can take echinecea, daisy-family, dandelion-type flowers without reaction). My sibling has N.A.S.H. --Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitus, which I think might be the same thing... fatty liver with liver damage?
Avatar f tn There have been studies on Milk Thistle, but nothing has ever been proven conclusively. The only things you will see on the MT websites, are stories that are supposedly written by ppl who are pleased. Nobody has any idea who writes that stuff, for real. For all anyone knows the owner of the website writes all that stuff themselves. LOL If I failed tx I may be willing to try all kinds of herbal stuff, until then I will tx.

2105146 tn?1334593783 Does anyone know if milk thistle is good, bad, or of no effect? I read somewhere that it is helpful for liver problems so started taking it. I won't see my dr. for almost three months so can't ask him until then.
Avatar m tn Bill, I never did take milk thistle but personally can't see the harm, except that I'm conservative about taking too much of anything. Certainly my health food store promotes it and thinks it's a tragedy that I'm on interferon! It's very popular in Europe, especially in Germany. It can provide a false sense of security, though, because your liver can deteriorate, independently of the thistle.
