Milk thistle does help cleanse the liver, but that isn't curing anything, it's helping the liver stay healthy. Caveats were expressed on here that taking milk thistle has its cautions and its limits and its benefits. As for peer reviewed science, science isn't a religion, it's just a means of observation.
Avatar f tn I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather. It does not sound like milk thistle would be harmful, but it might not do much good either. If your grandfather had hepatitis C, the literature suggests it won't help. If the issue is jaundice, cirrhosis, liver cancer, or fatty liver disease, it might help to ease inflammation and maybe even promote some cell repair.
Avatar n tn Why are you considering taking milk thistle? Do you have liver disease? Milk thistle hasn’t really shown much in the way of clinical evidence of being effective for treating liver injury.

1154822 tn?1262230166 Yeah, I took it before tx and now that I am SVR, I will prob start it again....but my goal is to have a healthy liver and not need milk thistle or anything else.... Is it good...probably-inconclusive at worst, doesn't hurt at best, maybe.. But I would advise not to take it on tx because there is no conclusive data good or bad....and you for sure don't want to interfer with the tx drugs. No magic bullet is right.....
Avatar f tn Milk thistle is good, though I wouldn't use Jarrow's. But a combination liver cleanse is better. There are many good ones. Bupleurum liver cleanse by Planetary Formulas is good, as is Enzymatic Therapy's milk thistle blend. For the chest symptoms, try Planetary Formula's mullein formula -- it should help clear the lungs a bit faster. Good luck.

Avatar f tn s Way Brand Milk Thistle, which - according to the packaging - contains 175 mg Milk Thistle extract (seed), 80% silymarin; and 180 mg Blessed Thistle (stern, leaf, flower). Is this safe? Is it helpful? Is there any kind of sensation at the liver site which indicates that you need to seek medical help immediately? I've read on the forum that some people actually experience bleeds. Does this manifest as bruising, or can it happen w/o any visible indications?
Avatar m tn my hepatologist has me taking 1000mg milk thistle three times daily. If you are under dr. care you should check with them first before taking anything, I would think. Are you already treating? Or waiting?

I know that may sound humerous but it seems to be prolonging his life. The vet gave up on him. His liver is clearing and he is very active.
