Common Questions and Answers about Milk thistle health

Avatar m tn 175mg. However, in my local health store, they are advertising Super Milk thistle tabs at 3000mg. Do you think it would not be wise to change over to such a higher tab? I'm guessing these super tabs just benefit the liver more but what are your views?
Avatar f tn We do have the right to express our opinions, with a few exceptions, health matters being one of them, that arena needs peer reviewed science. Did I miss something regarding milk thistle? The main point seems to be milk thistle "walls" off the live preventing it from doing its job.
Avatar f tn I forgot to tell you after you go to mayo clinic review of milk thistle you go to the site that says Milk Thistle and under that it has Mayo Clinic and it does give a web address www.mayoclinic.com/health/silymarin/NS-patient-milkthistle/ I tried it and can't get there so it is easier to just do it like I said.
1154822 tn?1262230166 I have been hearing alot of talk about Milk Thistle being the new magic tonic for the liver, any thoughts on this?
Avatar f tn There is no consensus among hepatologists about taking mik thistle, so for that reason I wouldn't do it. That said, there are members here who have reported that their hepatologists had no problem with their patients taking it. Some hepatologists say it's okay to take only before or after treatment itself and some say it's even okay to take during treatment. I would definitely look to the advice of your own hepatologist in this matter, if you want to pursue it.
Avatar m tn Hi, Peteshine, nice to meet you. Sorry it has to be under these conditions but onward and upward, right? Following your standard healthy diet that's high in vegetables and whole grains and low in processed foods, red meats and sugars is a good bet. It can get more specific. Certain whole grains may be better than others, for example. gauf, from the Hep C board has a journal entry under his profile that discusses a liver friendly diet.
Avatar m tn Phase II clinical trial on milk thistle that is recruiting at the moment for those that where treatment has failed them, sponsored by NCCAM and the National Insititute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Those with HCV and kidney diseases have a tough row to hoe, as conventional SOC is often not an option, so not surprised they are partnering in this study. http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT00680342?
2105146 tn?1334593783 Does anyone know if milk thistle is good, bad, or of no effect? I read somewhere that it is helpful for liver problems so started taking it. I won't see my dr. for almost three months so can't ask him until then.
Avatar n tn I wish I could help but I am not that familiar with it. Your doctor should have discussed this further but if he/she did not, try going to the health food store. One thing I know is "Milk Thistle". Good luck and let us know if you found something.
1253246 tn?1332073310 is not very goodl can you just take silymarin supplement since that is the active ingredient in milk thistle? I think I have seen both in the health food store.
Avatar f tn Oops sorry *blessed thistle, not milk thistle.. Milk on the brain lol! There are also breastfeeding support tablets that are made with both of those ingredients, one brand is "herbs of gold" you should be able to get them from your local health food store.
Avatar n tn My experience with milk thistle was a miracle. Before starting the hcv treatment hubby took milk thistle just for a month and it reduced his alt ast levels from above 150 to 65 and 60......Dnt take heavy dose just 400mg a day and if it dnt give any benefits it will also dnt harm.......it's very safe............
Avatar n tn Why are you considering taking milk thistle? Do you have liver disease? Milk thistle hasn’t really shown much in the way of clinical evidence of being effective for treating liver injury.
Avatar f tn i have been taking milk thistle for years now... my ast/alt are lower than ever (just about normal) and my viral load has dropped also... so i guess its doing something... i also just started taking liv-52...
Avatar f tn Yes, Milk Thistle is available specifically formulated for dogs. Human varieties should not be given, as they contain alcohol and sometimes other things that are unsuitable for canines. Here's a link for dog-friendly Milk Thistle (but there are lots, so you could just Google "Milk Thistle for Dogs"). http://search.petwellbeing.
286124 tn?1214938528 Milk thistle is used for the liver - - - there are no contraindications for the milk thistle and pain pills .......
Avatar m tn How many among you are taking or have taken Milk Thistle. I started taking one tablet a day and Doc was amazed to see decline in the Viral Load from 11000 to 120 in less than 3 months. Cant be absolute if this was because of Milk Thistle or something else.. No diff on ALT remained 80.. rest normal.
Avatar m tn Bill, I never did take milk thistle but personally can't see the harm, except that I'm conservative about taking too much of anything. Certainly my health food store promotes it and thinks it's a tragedy that I'm on interferon! It's very popular in Europe, especially in Germany. It can provide a false sense of security, though, because your liver can deteriorate, independently of the thistle.
1367233 tn?1316104535 I had digetstion problems (gas, etc) with Milk Thistle but kept it up and the problems went away. Do the Milk Thistle and all the other recomended nutrients here by HR and Gauff and others. These are positive things you can do today, while you wait.
1273473 tn?1270775840 Because standard of care with pegylated interferon plus ribavirin therapy is costly, has significant side effects, and fails to cure about half of all infections, many patients seek complementary and alternative medicine to improve their health, such as Silymarin, derived from milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Milk thistle's clinical benefits for chronic hepatitis C are unsettled due to variability in standardization of the herbal product.
Avatar m tn hi i would like to no witch is better maximum milk thistle or standardized they are a lot of milk thistle out thire
Avatar f tn I don’t know any of you lab results, but if your Dr thinks you need treatment, then Baraclude is a good choice. There is no need to be scared of the side effects of Baraclude. Most people do not feel any side effects from it, and if they do, the side effects are minimal and usually go away with time. Milk Thistle can be beneficial to the health of your liver and might decrease you ALT, but it is not going to bring you viral load down.
Avatar n tn A lot of people swear by "milk Thistle extract" I've been taking it for 6 months - I feel better - but not cured. Elevated Enzymes can be anything from hepatitis to alcoholism to "nash" to etc....- Ive even heard mononucleosis can cause them to be elevated - as well as exposure to industrial chemicals /toxins. Whatd the doc say???
