I am planning on going back to get another blood test soon, however, wanted to share with the group that I started taking Milk Thistle about three weeks ago to see whether this might help lower my enzyme levels to normal. What I have been finding is that I no longer need to take the prilosec or zantac, there is something (or appears to be something) in the Milk Thistle that is both helping me feel better as well as well as lowering my need for prilosec or other antacids.
We do have the right to express our opinions, with a few exceptions, health matters being one of them, that arena needs peer reviewed science. Did I miss something regarding milk thistle? The main point seems to be milk thistle "walls" off the live preventing it from doing its job.
I was diagnosed with Hep-c and Cirrhosis on Jan.5th 2015.....both Chronic ? My viral load is 676 , my meld score is 12....I have no idea what any of this means ? I'm 54 years old ! I have no insurance and Ive been turned down from Medicaid 2 times...Which means No G.I. Doctor , in fact no Dr. at all but a Primary Doctor at a clinic here in Savannah Ga. ! He informed me he knows absolutely nothing about liver disease's etc.

I was trying to participate in one of the new ClinicL Research Trials, but my liver enzymes were too high for the protocol. So even the Doctor told me to try Milk Thistle and drink tons of water before the lab test, and maybe myAST/ALT would go below the limit (400)
I began taking tons of it, in liquid and caps. I forgot that the gelatin caps constipated me, and became very uncomfortabe...and it didn't lower my enzymes, although I only tried for two weeks.
I did allot of research on my own, as I turned down a liver biopsy....and I discovered milk thistle...read about....I started taking it against what my family dr said, but my RA specialist said you have nothing to loose, I took it for approximately 3 years and all my liver enzyme readings have gone to normal. I have been off of milk thistle for at least one and half years and my readings are all normal..
Why are you considering taking
Bill, I never did take milk thistle but personally can't see the harm, except that I'm conservative about taking too much of anything. Certainly my health food store promotes it and thinks it's a tragedy that I'm on interferon! It's very popular in Europe, especially in Germany.
It can provide a false sense of security, though, because your liver can deteriorate, independently of the thistle.
I have been trying to find a certified, quality assured Milk Thistle supplement but can not find any legit info. to save my life (no pun intended). Any of you have suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I have been taking Alternative Med. Solutions' by Lloyd Wright for years but was just wondering.
I forgot to tell you after you go to mayo clinic review of milk thistle you go to the site that says Milk Thistle and under that it has Mayo Clinic and it does give a web address
