Avatar n tn Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Metoprolol is used to treat angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also used to treat or prevent heart attack. It seems to me if you have high blood pressure the medication should be taken regularily and not as needed. I don't know the effect it has on chest pain.
Avatar m tn I used to take a slow-release Propranolol 80 mg every day, which caused severe tiredness and extreme fatigue, to the point that I was not able to think straight and sometimes could not even get out of bed. Apparently, Propranolol also inhibits the ability for you to burn fat, not to mention gastrointestinal issues. Depression is also significantly higher when taking Propranolol.
Avatar f tn A nurse practioner I have dealt with for years says I should go up to the 40 mg per endocrinologist. Also have to take metoprolol for palpitations and shaking and was nervous about that as I have some wheezing and throat congestion from time to time. Doctor's said it is fine. I just wanted to check that this may all be normal as far as adjusting to the Methimazole? Most of my life I have not had the need for any medications and only take supplements which my doctors approve of them.
Avatar m tn I am 65 and take metoprolol (25 mg) for a fast heart rate. I went hiking this week and my heart rate was still running around 170. Is this normal or should I up the dose of metoprolol?
Avatar f tn However, the last two weeks, they have been increasing to having them almost every 30 seconds and last for hours at a time. I went to my cardio doctor and he put me on a 14 days event monitor. I saw an EP yesterday and was told I am indeed having lots of PVCs based on the event monitor findings, 12-lead EKG and pacemaker check. He said I could: 1) continue on my present Metoprolol (25 mg.
Avatar f tn Ok so I've been on Metoprolol 50-100mg a day for about a year for benign tachycardia. It's overall worked good for me. But I've noticed a decline in sexual function, specifically, more difficulty keeping an erection during sex. I'm about to start Cialis, so hopefully that will help regardless, but my cardiologist mentioned that I might try Cardizem. He was suggesting it had fewer sexual side effects.
Avatar m tn I take Metoprolol for a thick heart muscel & pvc, which it doesn't help much with the pvc's, Diltiazem was just added 120mg once a day. My doctor seemed somewhat reluctant to add the Diltiazem but said lets try it. My Blood pressure has been around 155/95. His reluctance just seems to scare me. Should I try it or should I not? If I do start taking it should I take it with the metoprolol or at different times?
Avatar f tn I'm currenetly taking 25mg daily of Metoprolol ER. This works well to control my tachy....but, has bad side effects of anxiety, restlessness and agitation. I lookd up Bystolic..and it has none of these type side effects listed. I was going to ask my doctor to change to Bystolic. Has anyone here had any success in changing over to Bystolic from Metoprolol ?
Avatar f tn 2) Are there any alternatives to regular blood pressure medication for treating SVT? I was taking metoprolol tartrate 25 mg twice daily, but this caused me to experience chest pressure. My cardiologist took me off of it and put me on a low dose of cardizem. I haven't experienced any ill effects so far from cardizem, but I would much rather find a natural treatment for SVT like acupuncture or natural medicines. I know that bearing down can help stop an episode of it...
Avatar n tn Metoprolol is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent that is used for treating high blood pressure, heart pain, abnormal rhythms of the heart, and some neurologic conditions. Metoprolol is generally well tolerated. However, this drug may reduce blood flow to the hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. Smoking may worsen this effect. Some side effects include: symptoms of a very slow heartbeat (e.g.
15256956 tn?1439425231 I WANT to start walking and riding my bike and drop weight which would do wonders for me. I want to be able to walk down to the cafe like I I used to with my backpack and sketchbook & laptop and create like I used to but I'm terrified. I'm trying to work through my anxiety & Cardio Neurosis with a Psychiatrist but it seems to be they like juggling my anxiety meds. Has anybody else had a hellish-time switching beta-blockers?
Avatar m tn There are much better drugs to treat anxiety than Metoprolol. I've been married 42 years to my wife who at one point couldn't spet out of our house due to anxiety. Paxil, a little Xanax, and lots of psyco-therapy are what cured her. In her opinion, Paxil (aka. Paroxetine) was a miracle drug. I used and still use today Metoprolol as a cardiac rhythm stabilizer, for mild hypertension, and for heart attack survivability although there is now some doubt on that claim.
Avatar m tn I was interested in hearing about other peoples experiences to see if they have had problems being on such a high dose for a long time (looks like it will be for the rest of my life)
378273 tn?1262097621 Rate control medication to control the heart rate Rhythm control medication, sometimes called drug cardioversion, to put the heart back into normal sinus rhythm Your doctor will decide which rhythm control drug is best for you based on the type of atrial fibrillation you have and your medical history, including the presence or absence of other existing heart disease.
Avatar m tn In the ER, they kept me overnight and I was admitted. The doctor put me on Metoprolol Succinate (25 mg) twice a day and observed me for 4 days. After a battery of tests, Nuclear Stress test, echo on the heart and neck, MRI/MRA (for dizziness) and blood work of all kinds and after a $ 54 K bill I was released. I stayed on Metoprolol Succ twice a day but it dropped my resting heart rate to the 50's and sometimes it was going a bit less than 50 (48).
7510956 tn?1411671417 Of the three drugs you mentioned. Metoprolol is by far the most used and most mentioned drug here on the forum. The other two, are rarely mentioned, but claim to have less breakthrough. I was on Metoprolol prior to my electrophysiology procedure for SVT. While it was successful, I remain on lower dose Metorpolol today (75mg per day) for control of mild hypertentsion. It is very effective in doing that for me at literally pennies per dose.
Avatar n tn Metoprolol is available in two forms, fast acting Metoprolol Tartrate (Lopressor), and the time release Metoprolol Succinate (Toprol XL). I used both, and found that side effects are similar; tiredness, weight gain, and a slow pulse. Side effects are more pronounced as the dosage is increased. I had dosages from 25mg to 200mg. daily. Other reported effects are loss of libido, tightness in the chest, itching, irregular breathing, and irregular heartbeat.
Avatar n tn I took 2 different versions of metoprolol, Toprol (metoprolol tartrate) and Toprol XL (metoprolol succinate). The second one is the extended release version. Toprol made my symtoms worse but Toprol XL worked fairly well in controlling my conditions, PVC's and PSVT. I was taking 50 mg a day in both cases. The only thing that affected me was a slight feeling of dizziness at times and some mental fatigue.
Avatar f tn One doctor sugested that since I had taken the Metoprolol for so long, my body is used to it and reacts without it. So I decided myself to start weaning again. the dose is so small, 25 mg. I want to get off of it because I believe meds are poison. Use them when you absolutely have to. I am taking other meds and am going to do the same thing. Strange thing, my husband is on Metoprolol for same thing, palpatations, nothing wrong with his heart.
Avatar f tn Yes, Metoprolol is a beta blocker and used to lower blood pressure and heart rate. I take 50 mg extended release to slow down tachycardia due to Afib. So my GUESS, is yes beta blocker is lowering HR. Too Low? I'd think, again guess, anything under 50, unless just waking up from a restful sleep, is too low. But I am not trying to argue with your medical advice, I am myself "just" a patient, a long time sufferer from Afib.
Avatar f tn I started taking Metoprolol er a month ago for tachycardia. I take 25mg daily. My BP was not an issue. The med now is not bringing my heart rate down any where near as well as it was in the beginning. When I first took the drug my heart rate was in the 50s ....now its averaging in a 24hr period about 15 bpms higher thank before. What is going on ? Something doesn't make sense ? Why is this happening ? I do not feel anxious. The metoprolol is not working as well.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone out there was using Metoprolol for their SVT on an as needed basis??? I have SVT and was started out on this drug and took it for a few months. With ok from my doctor I quit taking it. I hadn't had any episodes for about 6 months then I had one last night while I was sleeping. And it was a bad one, the kind where you think your gonna die. :( My doctor had told me that some people can take Metoprolol on an as needed basis. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Metoprolol Tartrate is meant to be taken USUALLY twice daily, or every 12 hours. It has a fairly short half life so you need to take as such. You could take 25mg every six hours, and it would probably benefit you by smoothing out the amount in your blood. The problem is that we're prone to forgetting to take the dose when scheduled. I supposed you could put an alarm on your phone to ring you every six hours as a reminder. Physicians seem to be ok with dosing every 12 hours.
