Metoprolol migraine

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol migraine

toprol

Avatar n tn I have been having some strange symptoms since starting metoprolol as a migraine preventative. My head feels like it weighs a ton, and there is a lot of pressure up there, too. I've also been experiencing blurry vision and some concentration issues. I also take lithium, trazodone and neurontin and a rare xanax.
768044 tn?1294223436 They mention using NSAIDS as preventative treatment, but SO much work has been done since that has shown very clearly how daily NSAIDS cause chronic migraine headaches and do not prevent migraine headaches. Also, they mention Fluoxetine (an SSRI which is rarely used today for migraine prevention) as a treatment on par with current first line migraine prophylactic. So, with this in mind, take this study lightly... it is an interesting read and still has relevant and useful information in it...
Avatar n tn I have PVCs, just diagnosed , and have about 17,000 of them over 48 hours (according to 48-hour Holter monitor). My local doctor says I can take metoprolol if I want to, as needed, if I have any discomfort (heart pounding, etc). I only have that for awhile in the evening, about an hour after my evening meal (also have irritable bowel and GERD, and have bloating and gas at the time of day. Otherwise, I know I have PVCs, but I never feel them.
Avatar m tn Over 70 if these are new and have never happened when you were young, and you were never diagnosed with migraine it is not likely migraine. Also your metoprolol reduces the risk of migraine. New onset of these symptoms over 70 is worrisome. It could be transient ischemic attack (TIA) due to disease of the heart/blood vessels or disease of the brain itself. Generally if the eye exam was normal I would suggest the family MD refer the patient to a neurologist.
Avatar f tn nobody out there on (Lopressor) Metoprolol? I just cant figure this out..its a Beta Blocker...just like the Atenolol I was on until last Thursday...when I was changed to this stupid Metoprolol...( Ive had 5 doses now)...its not all bad.. it DOES keep my heartrate nice and steady around 62 bpm..AT REST... but if I get up and move around--even walking across the ( very big) room here at work, my heartrate jumps to about 90 bpm in NO time.
Avatar f tn At home my blood pressure was 186/82 and my heart rate was 100 (I take daily Metoprolol for PSVT, so this was a rather high heart rate for me). I was feeling dizzy and nauseated, no real headache but still the "hole" in my vision. Next, I noticed what appeared to be waves of water pulsating up and down in both eyes. I wanted to go to the ER but my husband suggested I take an aspirin and rest, which I did and the symptoms subsided.
Avatar n tn I have been on a number of beta blockers over the last 20 years as a migraine preventative. Metoprolol, Atenolol, Nadolol, Propranolol. In doses between 10mg and 40mg. 15 years in my hair loss started. Like so many I thought it age related as I was 55 or so. But it became too promounced to ignore and so I went off the blockers. After a 7 month break I slunk back to my Doctor as I had so many headaches and could hardly eat anything that would not trigger a migraine.
Avatar f tn Went to the eye doctor (of course) he told me that my eye looked great but what I probably was experiencing was a migraine in my eye. The doctor went on to say that the migraine in my eye was probably due to anxiety and stress. Hope this helps! Hang in there...we are all going to beat this horrible disease.
12182312 tn?1427683956 SSRIs like paroxetine are a type of antidepressant that works by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain, while metoprolol is a beta blocker which works on the heart. What type of metoprolol are you taking. Metoprolol Tartrate or Metoprolol Succinate?
Avatar f tn Im already on 100 mg 1 time a day of extended release Metoprolol.....and I think, just to appease me, because ive had a couple really really bad days of almost nonstop palps..he said to increase my Metoprolol to 1 100mg tablet in the morning...and 1 100mg tablet at night. Anyone EVER been on such a huge dose before??? I trust him...but yet....Im scared to take that much!!! ANY info on SVC OR Metoprolol would be appreciated!
Avatar n tn I have taken Toprol xl 25 mg for about 5 years. My doctor switched me to metoprolol several months ago. When I filled my prescription this time, it was from a different mfg and I think I may be having problems with it as I just don't feel right. Could changing the mfg make a difference? ALSO, my doctor prescribed 50 mg to be cut in half for my prescribed 25 mg dose. Does cutting this tablet in half compromise the time release?
443862 tn?1237999439 I don't think the metoprolol, a beta blocker which; reduces the force and rate of the contraction of the heart, is causing this. The medicines that you take for hyperthyroidism might cause some exacerbation of the "hard heart beat" symptoms, especially if they are contraindicated with metoprolol, of course. Your doctor should be on top of this and I would let him know about it, especially if it just started, or is getting worse.
Avatar f tn Ok so I've been on Metoprolol 50-100mg a day for about a year for benign tachycardia. It's overall worked good for me. But I've noticed a decline in sexual function, specifically, more difficulty keeping an erection during sex. I'm about to start Cialis, so hopefully that will help regardless, but my cardiologist mentioned that I might try Cardizem. He was suggesting it had fewer sexual side effects.
667913 tn?1242700488 Beta blockers are the most commonly prescribed preventive treatment for migraine and are considered very effective. Propranolol is the most widely used beta blocker for migraine. Some of the older beta blockers like Atenolol and Metoprolol have been assocated with weight gain. Topamax is anticonvulsant drug but also a widely used migraine preventive medication. It does take some time to show its effect. Topamax causes weight loss. Other options include Methysergide and Depakote.
Avatar f tn I take this medication as well and have been on it for 3 years. I have never experienced depression while on this medication. I believe your doctor is correct in that this is not a side effect of the medication. I have not heard of weight gain from this medication as well. Maybe this is a side effect of your depression? In other words, you are eating more because you are depressed.
Avatar n tn I got the generic form but the cost is very high. Can he switch to metoprolol and take 50mg in the am and 50mg in the pm?
Avatar f tn He told me to wean off of the metoprolol for 5 days while taking the verapamil, and to cut down to 50mg on the metoprolol for the first day and go progressively down throughout the 5 days it takes for the verapamil to get in my system. I haven't started the verapamil yet. Partially because I have a hard time swallowing pills, partially because I am confused about the specifics of switching.
1035252 tn?1427227833 I'm a 24 y/o female, fairly healthy, and I take Metoprolol 12.5 twice a day for a rapid heartbeat caused by a leaky aortic valve. First of all I want to say that I despise the Metop., the side effects are way too invasive for me to handle, and as soon as I see my new cardiologist (in the next few weeks) I am begging to be taken off of any sort of beta-blocker. My resting heart-rate is usually around 120, and with the Metop. it's been around 114.
Avatar m tn Lopid, Norvasc, Ramipril, Metoprolol, Levothyroxin. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
1027737 tn?1253103788 Hi, Can someone tell me what the difference between Metoprolol and Metoprolol Tartrate is? Thank You in advance!
589617 tn?1218719782 I take metoprolol (aka lopressor) for PVC's and occasional SVT. It has been good for me....my PVC's are not gone, but they are not as "forceful" and therefore are easier to ignore. The SVT is very infrequent for me in the first place, so I can't say that the metoprolol has had anything to do with the fact that I haven't had any for nearly 1.5 years, but I'm not going to stop the drugs to find out :-).
