Metoprolol and liver

Common Questions and Answers about Metoprolol and liver

toprol

Avatar f tn I'm currently on 12.5mg of metoprolol succinate and 50mg sertraline and my doctor wants me to stop taking the beta blocker. He told me that just stopping it on 12.5 should be ok but I have concerns. I read that taking the two together can cause more levels of beta blocker to be in the system than normal due to how the liver processes both medications. Should I just stop it at 12.5 or should I taper down further to 6.25mg? Anyone else stop taking Toprol XL while on Zoloft?
Avatar f tn But I am reading that CBD oil may increase the concentration of metoprolol succinate er in my body because they're metabolized by the same enzyme in the liver. I only take a small dose of metoprolol (37.5mg), and I'd of course start out with a low dose of CBD (5-10mg). Of course I will ask my doctor about this when I see him, but I need to start something now. I need to calm down. Does anyone take these two meds together without any issues?
612551 tn?1450025775 Research on the web says that Atenolol is much longer lasting than Metoprolol and suggests that Metoprolol Tartrate has to be taken twice a day... Atenolol only once ! Strangle, again, my Cardiologist who issued a prescription for Atenolol upon my request to be allowed to try it is for 25 mg twice a day.
378273 tn?1262101221 Someone else told me the elevated enzymes could be due to my taking both Metoprolol and Diovan. And I also have very low BP at times which apparently can also cause this. I will make sure I track this.
Avatar n tn 3 weeks back, I had a routine blood test done and 2 liver enzyme levels were found elevated. AST was 211 and ALT was 64. The doctor requested another blood test and so exactly 1 wk after the first blood test, I got another test done adn the AST was now 510. It had gone up by 299 units The doctor has requested ultrasound but results are not in yet. I am wondering how the AST level could go up so much in a week time. I don't feel any sickness or other health problems.
Avatar n tn I ALSO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BP AND ONE OF THE SYMPTOMS OF METOPROLOL(MY MEDS), IS HIGH LIVER ENZYMES. I'M IN THIS FORUM HOPING SOMEONE WILL TELL ME OF A BETTER REASON THAN ALCOHOL BUT IN MY CASE IT PROBABLY IS THE BOOZE. HIGH LIVER ENZYMES MEAN YOUR LIVER IS UNDER STRESS. A COUPLE OF FACTORS CAN CAUSE THIS, ALCOHOL BEING ONE OF THEM. GO ONTO A SEARCH ENGINE AND PUNCH IN LIVER ENZYMES. IT'LL BRING UP SOME GOOD STUFF. MY ULTRASOUNDS WERE FINE A YEAR AGO AND ARE FINE NOW.
233616 tn?1312790796 In light of the fact that I am currently UND and have no virus, the reversal of fatty liver and less necrosis and less HCC all sounds very appealing, not to mention any reduction in IR would mean ones own Interferon response would be better post tx. and this alone may increase ones chances of an SVR even if begun at the end of an SOC regime. Perhaps now, more than any other time it could help insure one will recognize any lingering HCV and seek and destroy as designed.
Avatar f tn Patient response rates to hepatitis C therapy can be variable, depending on factors such as viral genotype and subtype, and liver fibrosis. Patients with genotype 1a, IL28B genotype TT and METAVIR scores of F3 and F4 can be particularly challenging to cure," said Maria Beumont, M.D., medical leader for simeprevir, Janssen. "Janssen is committed to advancing hepatitis C therapy for even the most difficult-to-cure patients." -------------------- Mainly this comment......
Avatar f tn the most common cause of abnormal liver tests in the US is fatty liver. Try to lose weight and eat healthy and I am usre that they will decrease appreciably or normalize. they are not that high--you should however be screened for viral hepatitis.
Avatar n tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Increased liver enzymes could be due to the medications. Metoprolol is known to cause hepatitis. But the elevation is only marginal, so the pros and cons need to be weighed before discontinuing a medication, discuss this with your doctor. But ensure to follow up with your doctor and monitor liver enzymes to see for changes. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn The pravastatin could be the reason, however which of his liver enzymes are elevated? Let us know and I may be able to help you out.
Avatar m tn Hello, my liver has been perfect up until now. Back in June my alt was 16 and my ast was 30 Now On August 28th my alt is 14 and mt ast is 57. I had a colonoscophy on August 2nn and the DR said everything looked great including the liver. I did start taking Carvedilol (Beta Blockers). I was taking Metoprolol before I was was switched. Could this be why my ast levels are up? Everything else is perfect. Should I be worried?

Avatar n tn If it continues to rise, I would consider tests for hepatitis and an ultrasound to evaluate for any liver masses or fatty liver which can cause an elevation of liver enzymes. Although Aciphex is a safe medication, in rare, rare circumstances, it can cause inflammation of the liver. I doubt that this applies in your case - however if your ALT continues to rise, it is a consideration. Followup with your personal physician is essential.
1475202 tn?1536274577 Other daily meds include xifaxan, lactalose, lexapro and metoprolol. Blood pressure diuretic Lisinopril,Hydrochlorthiazide 20mg/12.5mg. BP is 100/58. Diagnosed at age 38 currently 39 male. 1) Finally on to my question, is it really strange that I don’t have or never have had Ascites or Edema? Is this a problem you see in my future? 2) I’ve tried to provide as much information as possible so I could ask you if you agree with my doctors assessment of transplantation.
Avatar n tn I am taking Lipitor 80 mg, metoprolol 100mg / twice, asprin 325 mg, lisinopril 20mg /twice, plavix 75mg, gemfibrozil 600mg / twice and just started taking Ranitidine 300mg/twice instead of the zantac I have been taking for heart burn. I'm six foot weighing about 230 lbs. What can I do to get my liver count down and reduce the number of pills i'm taking each day. This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/235767'>acid</a>.
Avatar m tn METOPROLOL, PLAVIX, COZAAR, ISOSOR MONO-SULFATE,VYTORIN, AND OF LATE, RANEXA. THIS LAST ONE, RANEXA, WORKS VERY WELL WITH ME IN STOPPING THE ANGINA I WAS GETTING WHICH WAS BECOMING ALMOST CHRONIC. IT ALLOWS ME TO EXERCISE AND FUNCTION ALMOST AS WELL AS BEFORE. HOWEVER, I REALLY LIKE TO EAT A !/2 GRAPERUIT IN THE MORNING AND THE MANUFACTURES SAYS YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE GRAPEFRUIT PRODUCTS WITH RANEXA. i WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY. IS IT DANGEROUS IN THAT LIVER, KIDNEY OR OTHER ORGAN WOULD BE DAMAGED.

Avatar f tn will phlebotomy reverse the weakness, resolve the SVT and halt the arthritis? I do have (hereditary) high BP and take 12.5 mg metoprolol twice a day, which helps with the heart rhythm problem and keeps my BP around 110/75. An EKG and stress test at the health assessment were normal, but I was completely exhausted after 9 mins on the treadmill, even though I exercise 5 times/week and am not overweight. I just cannot get fit!
Avatar m tn It appears when the system is overloaded, the grapefruit juice can “swamp” the system, keeping the liver busy and blocking it from breaking down drugs and other substances. Doctors have since found that more than 40 different meds can have their effects magnified by grapefruit juice. Cranberry juice can increase the effects of a blood thinner called warfarin.
Avatar m tn com/drug-interactions/celexa-with-inderal-679-335-1956-1266.html As both Metoprolol Tartrate and Citaprolam are metabolized in the liver, the Citaprolam can increase the effects of the Metoprolol Tartrate causing "bradycardia, hypotension, and complete heart block following the addition of a SSRI, subsequently requiring discontinuation of one or both agents and/or institution of a permanent pacemaker." I have taken AD medications before including Effexor and Wellbutrin.
Avatar n tn the metoprolol is broken down in the liver, by an enzyme. But the Celexa inhibits that enzyme. So you can end up with too much of the metoprolol in your system. You can thereby have heart rate or blood pressure too low, or worse. it seems that reducing the metoprolol can be an option, then increasing it gradually as long as no symptoms occur. http://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/celexa_d04332_metoprolol_d00134.
Avatar m tn CoQ10 made my heart race. Cod liver at night is relaxing for me. I have a brother with mental illness and Cod liver oil prescibed by his Dr. has help him a great deal. I'm on the generic for toporal 25 mg extended release for PVC"s ,the amazing thing about this drug. My anxiety is much better. Panic disorder practically gone.
Avatar f tn We're all very individual, and Person A can start Synthroid and have RT3 go up, while Person B's will go down and it will have absolutely no effect on Person C's. Has your doctor offered any alternative besides Synthroid?
Avatar f tn I have pvcs that seem to start every 3 weeks(approx) and stick around for a couple of weeks and then go away until the next cycle. I have runs of them and have been put on Metoprolol 25 mg. This worked for awhile but stopped working recently, so I tried taking passionflower extract in addition. This worked well and strangely I wake up in the morning without pvcs and they only start about 1 hr AFTER I take my daily dose of Metoprolol. Can the beta blocker cause PVCs?
Avatar f tn My cardiologist called it Atrial Flutter, which converted to Atrial Fibrillation (not an improvement). To the point, with Metoprolol my resting HR is always below 100 and when really at rest goes into the 70s. I have no experience on BB taken with anxiety meds, but can say I don't recall ever reading of a problem. Seems this should be an easy one for your doctor... shows how much I know.
Avatar n tn I was on 300mg of inderal (bata blocker) but have since stopped since that is a high dose for a person of a 100 pounds and my kidney and liver functions started to suffer. Plus these drugs are not pregnancy approved. I went to the OB to see if I could have a second child and I was stunned by the response....."adopt." The OB's reasoning was that I would be on bed rest and I was high risk the first time and deliveres 6 weeks early.
Avatar f tn Everything checked out. My liver was also normal-sized in November. I had my levels rechecked in January and the GPT/ALT elevation has persisted (it is at 42) and the GOT is just within normal range at 34. My cholesterol remains high despite a healthy, lower fat diet (and it was not terribly unhealthy before, either). A liver ultrasound last week showed a slightly enlarged liver but no visible blockage in the gallbladder.
Avatar n tn Had to drop Zocor after 3 months because of elevated liver enzymes, muscle and joint pain. Now 8 months post CABG liver enzymes OK again but slight microalbuminuria so now on 20mg Benicar and training harder after dropping Toprol XL to 12.5mg. Experienced about a week of elevated resting pulse (80-90bpm) upon initiation of Benicar but now at 60-70bpm after 2 months. Exercise pulse recovery rate much improved after 2 weeks on 12.5mg Toprol XL but now keenly aware of effects of ingestion.
Avatar n tn Boy was everything that happened before the diagnosis SCARY!!!! My mother takes 10mg Methimazole and 100mg Metoprolol. She also has hypERthyroidism. We were wondering why she talked so fast:) lol. This is very new and different for us. She is also a smoker. Misunderstanding the Doctor, we are wondering if she can only take the Methimazole for a 2yr. period or if she can take it for her lifetime as long as the hyperthyroidism is regulated?
