Common Questions and Answers about Methadone withdrawal in newborn

methadose

Avatar n tn If a pregnant mother is taking daily methadone, and is 7 months pregnant, I know the baby will be addicted to methadone. How serious is the withdrawal process for this little infant. Will there be long term effects? If the mother is considering of giving up the baby for adoption, how do you prepare the adoptive parents for this?
Avatar n tn You CANNOT wean off methadone at this time, no matter what you have heard, unless the patient is on a small dose. I am on 120 mgs and if I wean off , I will most likely have a miscarriage. I have a Doctor at the clinic I go to, and a OBGYN AND my regular doctor and they have all said I cannot, CANNOT wean off it.
Avatar n tn This means that it is not known whether buprenorphine and naloxone will be harmful to an unborn baby. Use of buprenorphine and naloxone during pregnancy may cause withdrawal symptoms in a newborn baby. Do not take buprenorphine and naloxone if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Contrary to what you may have heard methadone is not safe during pregnancy, it is actually more dangerous to a baby than heroin. I am not sure why doctors prescribe it but they shouldn't.
Avatar f tn Stopping methadone in any way causes withdrawal symtoms in the mother and the baby. During the first trimester this makes having a miscariage much more likely and in the 3rd it makes premature birth and stillbirth much more likely. In the 2nd trimester there is less risk but its still there and methadone causes some of the worst withdrawal of any medication and not only is the mother's body stressed but he baby goes through it as well..
Avatar n tn the problem is that i am now starting to feel some bad withdrawals and am afraid that if i go lower i will be in total withdrawal which i heard is bad for the baby.also, will the baby go thru withdrawals if i stay on 1mg.and if i wean to nothing will the baby be okay and free of withdrawals?i have no idea what to do and feel like time is running out. please help.
Avatar f tn Tramadol may cause life-threatening addiction and withdrawal symptoms in a newborn.
Avatar f tn Consider reading my long comments about withdrawal in newborns here: http://suboxonetalkzone.com/2010/02/01/withdrawal-in-newborns-lay-off-the-guilt-trip/ If you can taper off the opioids, do so-- slowly, at a rate that you work out with your doc. If you cannot do that, seek the help of an addiction doc.
1536370 tn?1292536867 hi my name is jinna, i am currently 8month's pregnant with a lil'-girl, my question is, i am currently taking 10mg's of methadone in the am and 10mg's in the pm, my will my baby have withdrawl effects when she is born, or is it safe to possibly get off before he due date wich is feb-2....
Avatar f tn I returned to methadone as was best option during pregnancy.(fortunately baby had no withdrawal symptoms). Haven't used heroin for about 5 years but so scared of withdrawal, thought i would be on one of the above for life. Baby now 19mths & have been withdrawing slowly so can still fulfill parental (single). I am currently on 4mg and have conflicting info regarding what to do next.
1311475 tn?1274198780 I should not be in withdrawal since I have tapered myself down to the 60 mg and have been at that dose for quite some time. I was given an NSAID called Mobic to reduce the pain from withdrawal symptoms but have other side effects from that, like withdrawal symptoms when I take it, I for one did not see any of these symptoms that I'm having as a side effect on the drugs information pamphlet or research that I've done on the medication.
Avatar n tn he came home from the hosp on feb 19th and had been off the methadone about a couple days. he has crying episodes and seems in pain. his mom called the nurses who told her he could be having withdrawal. no one told us about any of this when he was discharged. not sure how to help our little man and how long to expect this. any help?

Avatar f tn Methadone is excreted into and accumulates in human milk. Excreted methadone may prevent withdrawal symptoms in addicted infants. Methadone is considered compatible with breast-feeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics. http://www.drugs.com/pregnancy/methadone.
Avatar f tn my daughter has weaned herself from methadone, is now having withdrawal symtoms. should she continue taking the methadone, should she continue to wean herself off and suffer the side effects? what are the worse case symtoms she may experience. any suggestions i may pass on.
Avatar f tn If you are already on suboxone, you will most likely be switched over to methadone. Suboxone withdrawal in the pregnant woman is just as dangerous to the fetus as mom.going through methadone withdrawal.
Avatar f tn I believe everyone is different. I was on klonopin for 2 years and became pregnant and had to ween off of it. This was not hard. However I was unable to ween off subutex (not recommended because opiate withdrawal can be very dangerous for an unborn baby) and switched to methadone for my pregnancy which is the most studied and safest drug to take while pregnant.
Avatar n tn My name is mike I am 32 years old and I am a recovering drug addict who attends a methadone treatment center in Oklahoma! I would to start off by saying that methadone saved my life!!!! But I have been experiencing extreme vomiting and sweating associated with methadone and I am unable to find a doctor in Oklahoma who will help me! So if there is anybody who has experienced something similar PLease HELP! I never want to return to the hell on earth I experienced with opiates!!!!!!!!!
Avatar m tn Yep right here!!...I swear, & not many people believe me, but my methadone withdrawal was almost like nothing!!...I was on it for 8yrs highest dose about 100mg, & from January to March 24, 2012 I tapered completely off...by myself..no Dr...I was 3months clean & started to have bladder/kidney pain, had some surgeries, got on oxycodone for that & am currently trying to taper off it...let me tell you, it has been beyond WORSE than the methadone!!!...
Avatar n tn Thanks pattifan, I definitely do not want to use methadone ,I have seen what a withdrawing newborn looks like and I am determined to deliver drug free I am just trying to find a way to get off this drug without harming my unborn child, the tapering idea is sounds like the best thing to do but I dont know how to do it exactly, not sure how much to taper off each day, its confusing! And on top off all this I have to stand at computer all day for 8 hours at work.
Avatar n tn Methadone does collect in your bone marrow and fatty tissue. It also effects your thyroid and pancreas. The pain happens when you withdrawal, and it is horrrrible, im not sure how we can go through so much pain without being killed, but trust me I feel your pain. Also when you start detoxing, your nerve roots are raw and craving the narcotic like the rest of your body. Good luck to you, its a horrible thing to go through.
Avatar n tn can my gp prescribe something for my cocodamol addiction (withdral) like methadone or somethng to get through the pain and symtoms?
Avatar n tn Give them as much methadone as long as they want it in hopes that they will live(exist) and not die from an OD. Methadone addicts are visably sedated except for the low dose people and spend their days nodding, constipated to the max and sweating. It's not my idea of living.
968643 tn?1272314125 t want your newborn to go through what you are going through now! Hang in there! Benzodiazepines are not recommended during pregnancy, and some of them do increase the risk for birth defects. Xanax seems to be one of the safer ones from what I can glean from the literature. The big problem is the newborn withdrawl, and your lucky baby won't have to go through that. Good luck!
Avatar f tn i went from 60 to nothing in 5 wks my last dose was 33 days ago and im still rockin my skin crawls, my legs agg but the only thing that gives me comfort is that i know its not going to last forever methadone is an evil drug that seems to stay in your system forever ive heard of people who had withdrawal symptoms for over 6 months. so my advice to u is go as slow as u possibly can 1mg 2 tops a wk. it ***** having those liquid handcuffs on. good luck 2 u.
