Methadone in babies

Common Questions and Answers about Methadone in babies

methadose

Avatar n tn t been studied like methadone but from my personal experience I know lots of women who have babies on both suboxone and methadone and those babies are all fine. I had a friend tell me just today that she has a friend who is 4 months pregnant and is on suboxone and they found out her baby has down syndrome and she is saying it's from suboxone. Now whether that's true or not....who knows. But I haven't found anything about babies being born with downsyndrome so.... take it from there.
Avatar f tn The most common are smaller head size, low birth weight, and withdrawal symptoms that varies in severity. The majority of these babies will develop in the normal range and size throughout childhood.
217599 tn?1202850952 Aahhh hope the baby is better, carnt believe doctors over there use methadone for babies I know they use it when babies are born addicted to heroin but that poor baby, the doctors must know what there doing but it just seems wrong
Avatar f tn He/she knows you are on methadone right? Most states are testing babies at birth so this will show up and if your OB knows there wont be any surprises. The important thing here is you have stopped now. I would put a plan in place to get some help with this. There is NA/AA or addiction counselors. You are not the only one this has happened too as we see many new moms on here. I know you are scared and this is weighing heavily on you so telling the truth will make you feel better.
Avatar f tn today i want another baby in the worst way and although my experience was ok and my son has no problems and is a healthy boy who you would never know he was a methadone baby i will not get pregnant again on methadone. that is just a choice of mine. it was tough having him in the hospital. that choice is up to you. if you do everything you are suppost to chance are our baby will be fine, but they still dont know years down the road if there could be any problems from the methadone.
Avatar f tn The problem happend because i missed a day dosing.I didnt put 2 babies on the bus in below zero weather and go dose.Well i didnt know i would get thrown out of WIT for that.so now im being detoxed from 6 mo.s at 100mgs. 10 mgs. every other day.what am i gonna do?? my detox started today.any suggestions?
Avatar f tn If you give birth to a baby while still on methadone, baby will go into withdrawal a few days after delivery if you do not breastfeed because of methadone level falling in his or her bloodstream. Breastfeeding while on methadone has been done, but there have been reported cases of respiratory arrests and deaths in infants while breastfeeding from mothers taking pure opiate agonist such as methadone. There are better ways of approaching your situation.
Avatar n tn ve been on methadone through a treatment facility and there are lots of women that are on methadone as well that just had babies recently and a girl that I have seen that is pregnant now many months into her pregnancy and she is still dosing methadone. So safely you can do it under a Drs care of course. Good luck..
Avatar n tn The baby might have a higher than normal respiratory rate, runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, inward pulling of the chest when breathing and periods of cyanosis or bluish skin discoloration There is also an increase incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or SIDS, in methadone babies in comparison to drug-free babies. It's very important for parents to learn the skills needed when caring for their baby as he/she withdraws from passive methadone addiction.
Avatar n tn for some reason I am thinking doctors like to use suboxne during pregnancy before methadone but the babies are almost always kept in nicu for a while to be tapered off the methadone......and you will have risks with your pregnancy such as pre-term birth and low birth weight and resp. problems at birth and etc. anyone who is taking medications during pregnancy that are narcotics have these concerns.
Avatar n tn some babies need some medication and if your comfortable with it you can take them home after a few days to complete the weening process. Breast feeding is also ok when on methadone. The amount of methadone in the breast milk is so small that doctors say that the benefit of breastfeeding are worth exposing the baby to a tiny amount of methadone.
Avatar f tn Hello, I am looking for someone who is or has been in a methadone maintenance program while pregnant. I've clean and sober for awhile now but I'm still on methadone and now that I'm pregnant I can't get off of it. Just looking for some positive or useful knowledge. Thanks!
Avatar n tn ve been on methadone for 8 years and when my twins were born they waited 7 days and put them on methadone which was not the plan I had in mind for them (I Wonted them to try something like phenobarbital or some easier narcotic but no they put them on methadone once they weighed 5 pounds I took them home on a small dose of methadone once a day they went for there 2 month check up and the doctor said they have out grown there dose just half it than take them off I done this for 2 days and my babie
Avatar m tn Hi Mimi, I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties your grandchild & family are experiencing. I was on my last Methadone clinic for twenty years. I saw plenty of women raise physically healthy children. Unfortunately, the difficulties seemed to arise when there were other drugs being used during the pregnancy like alcohol, cocaine & Meth.
Avatar f tn Im sure the experts will answer you soon. I just wanted to say that I go to a methadone clinic and there are many healthy babies born there all the time. I've seen the doctors on here recommend suboxone for pregnant patients but I think that since suboxone is relatively new compared to methadone, I would worry that they do not know all the negative effects on unborn children yet. Methadone has been around for decades and there is nothing that they do not know already know about it.
1486105 tn?1288444547 No 1 else can m,ake these decisions for you sweetheart. I have friend who have had babies on methadone and both their babies left hospital in 5days ive never heard of a baby leaving hosp in 3days bcoz i know in scotland baby has 2 be observated for 5days and if all ok they get home.
Avatar n tn ) I have known moms to be on higher doses like 70 n above with babies withdrawing at birth and being in hospital for up to 6 weeks some cases. At time I was in there my counselor who worked only with preg women told me she had never seen a baby WD and have to stay in hospital without mom when the mom stayed at 30 mg n below. That is why I made sure I kept mine at 30 n below. And I deff had better luck with it than i expected. Good luck to u and ur baby!! I commend u for being in treatment.

Avatar f tn She was given drugs to sedate her and for pain during intubation and needed methadone to wean her off the meds. Then the methadone was tappered over a period of 5 days. Many people don't realize this is common for children who have been on ventilators, usually more then 5 days. She still had awful withdrawal the first 24 hours even on methadone. And some mild withdrawal after the methadone tapper had ended. Irritable, shakey, low grade fever and lethargy.
Avatar n tn I got to know this one lady well and she was 27 and had been addicit to oxycotion for yrs due to medial problems and when they found out she was pregnant they sent her to be put on methadone. She done methadone the whole time she was pregnant. Once she had the baby she (baby) stayed in hospital few extra days and then nothing after that baby was healthy and fine. I still see her from time to time and that little girl is beautiful and is doing wonderful. She is a yr now...
Avatar f tn I got advised that some babies can be born absolutely fine, and thats with the mum carrying on with a methadone dose. but on the other hand some babies can be born and not be alright. i got advised not to do anything drastic!!!! As in try go wi out this weekend.see howe it'd be. Has anyone been able to cut down through their pregnancy and had their baby and he/she came out fine and healthy?? ill Say Thank You now If anyone can help.
Avatar f tn I am big polar and on methadone maintenance while pregnant with my first child. My counselor really started making me feel bad about my mood stabilizer and the baby so I tried to go off of it. I relapsed and had 2 dirty tests at the methadone clinic at 27 weeks. I feel so awful and have been beating myself up about this. I literly cxabt sleep at. night. I keep hearing different things.. that youare OK if you and your baby is clean at the time.
Avatar n tn I worked in the NICU..saw too much he11 too tell with babies born addicted..so it is best for me not to say/nor relive the horrors here//specially since this is impending fro ur child perhaps...it is hard to say exactly how sick ur baby will be//everyoy baby is different...and should have not posted..
Avatar f tn a few women at my clinic have had babies with no problems. The ones whose babies did they were taking other things on the side. As long as that is all you are taking everything should be ok. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Stopping methadone in any way causes withdrawal symtoms in the mother and the baby. During the first trimester this makes having a miscariage much more likely and in the 3rd it makes premature birth and stillbirth much more likely. In the 2nd trimester there is less risk but its still there and methadone causes some of the worst withdrawal of any medication and not only is the mother's body stressed but he baby goes through it as well..
Avatar n tn I was on 60 mg of methadone a day while I was pregnant. The dr followed me closely & felt guilty but I couldn't be off the methadone because of my situation. They knew every thing I did. I had a normal pregancy and my son was born 2 yrs ago healthy. Yes he was born with methadone in his system but the dr's knew this and gave him a taper dose.
Avatar f tn s better to stay on a level dose until your baby is born. Many women have had healthy, bright bouncing babies who were on methadone while PG. The medical staff is more than equipped to make sure your baby is just fine after deliver. (especially since you have been honest and they know what to watch for). Relax....enjoy your pregnancy......and after you deliver....if you want to wean off the methadone.....
Avatar f tn As babies born dependent on methadone grow, they usually will fall in the normal range for size and development. Methadone is not the only thing that can cause these symptoms. Smoking cigarettes, drug use, your biological makeup, nutrition, and how well you take care of yourself are just a few examples of things that can affect the health of your baby. Whether or not you are pregnant, you only get the benefits of methadone if you are stable on your dose.
647852 tn?1251247846 Thank you for your time and answer! Not sure if I reply back to you here but I'll try. Can methadone be used to wean babies off of the many other medications they are on? What if I want a second opinion by another doctor in another hospital? How do I do that? Sorry I have a lot of questions. Thanks!
