Avatar n tn * Anthelmintics (Used for treating certain parasitic infections, includes praziquantel albendazole and mebendazole) * carbamazepine (Tegretol) Grapefruit or grapefruit juice slows the breakdown of this drug, increasing the level of it in blood * Loperamide (Imodium), the anti-diarrhea drug * colchicine (Colcrys) The CYP3A4 isoform of cytochrome P450 is located in both the liver and the enterocytes. Many oral drugs undergo first-pass (presystemic) metabolism by the enzyme.
Avatar m tn This, initially the drug does not completely metabolize and has an extended half-life. This why it is dangerous to take grapefruit juice with certain medications. Follow me on this. You take a substance that reduces the production of these enzymes (say grapefruit juice) and for the first four hours the drug does not fully metabolize. After six hours the grapefruit juice wears off, the liver again starts producing these enzymes, and you take a second dose of the medication.
Avatar f tn thanks Research about the interaction of grapefruit juice with drugs suggests that compounds in grapefruit juice, called furanocoumarins (for example, bergamottin), may be responsible for the effects of grapefruit juice. Researchers believe that furanocoumarins block the enzymes in the intestines that normally break down many drugs. One glass of grapefruit juice could elicit the maximum blocking effect, and the effect may persist for longer than 24 hours.
1502361 tn?1290540230 Grapefruit juice will not work with methadone. I am aware of grapefruit juice potentiating other drugs but methadone is not one of them. I am not questioning your education. I am quite certain you are very intelligent. Most drug addicts are. We understand your question. I just think this is the wrong forum to be asking. Most people here are at some stage of recovery, abstinence, detox or all of the above.

Avatar f tn One thing I have read about is Grapefruit Juice helping in clearing HCV. Since reading this I have started drinking Grapefruit Juice daily. The way I see it is it is not going to hurt me either way to drink it. But I was wondering how many here really believe that drinking Grapefruit Juice can help fight off HCV? I am trying everything I can to help me try and have spontaneous clearance. I don't really care for the taste but have been putting it down just incase.
Avatar n tn However, since the accidental discovery of an interaction between the calcium channel blocker, felodipine, with grapefruit juice,1 it has now become evident that grapefruit juice has the potential to alter the plasma concentrations of many medications when they are taken by mouth. In some cases, this may result in undesirable clinical effects of medications.
Avatar f tn I read those articles too. Some of them forget to mention that the level of naringenin concentration needed is impossible to achieve simply by drinking the juice, or even by taking supplements. I've drank grapefruit juice for 3 months, and it made me feel great, full of energy, plus my gallstones stopped bothering me. Yet, as for HCV, my viral load actually grew by the end of the third month. This is when I agreed to start tx.
Avatar f tn To know me, is to know how much I enjoy googling about fertility. I came across grapefruit juice today. Has anybody heard/tried this? I don't know what the medical reasons are for it to work, but supposedly it is supposed to increase your amount of EWCM. I don't have hardly any (except when I was on EPO).

976606 tn?1263667593 I'm not sure what the official medical answer is regarding grapefruit juice and Synthroid, but I have never noticed a difference when I drink pink grapefruit juice vs. any other juice. I know grapefruit juice is a no-no with certain meds (my Mom can't drink it because of one of her post-heart attack medications), but I have never seen any warnings regarding synthroid.
Avatar f tn I have read that there are studies that grapefruit juice has properties that actually help with the HCV. Anyone read that? Opionions?

Avatar n tn Grapefruit juice contains a substance that increases the half-life of many drugs. It will therefore keep the levels of the antibiotic at higher levels for longer periods of time. Although antibiotics have some toxicity, taking grapefruit juice will not harm you at all and will increase the effectiveness of the antibiotic. Grapefruit juice should not be taken with other medications, specifically those that affect the heart rate or blood pressure.
1175033 tn?1492201228 Hi Stacey...thanks for posting this info...I did know that grapefruit and grapefruit juice could interact with some meds.... Many r unaware that even "natural" supplements can interact with meds...so u should never add nething to ur list of intake items unless u discuss it with ur dr or ur pharmacist....they can tell u what will have adverse reactions...or cause ur meds to be ineffective.....
