Common Questions and Answers about Methadone for pregnant women

methadose

Avatar f tn Due a lack of controlled study data demonstrating the safety of buprenorphine for use by pregnant women, the FDA has not yet approved buprenorphine for use by pregnant women unless the benefits of its use outweigh the potential harms of non use. When doctors choose to prescribe buprenorphine to pregnant women, they will customarily prescribe Subutex (buprenorphine only) rather than Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone), to reduce the risks of precipitated withdrawal on the fetus.
Avatar n tn I work at a MMT clinic (methadone maintenance) and we have had pregnant women on methadone who have delivered perfectly healthy babies. Difference b/w methadone and other opiates is that on a stable dose (which differs for everyone), a pregnant woman (or any individual) is able to go 24 to 36 hours without having ANY physical withdrawals whereas with heroin and other opiates, the half-life is 4 to 6 hours so the individual experiences withdrawals unless they continuously use.
474575 tn?1207682702 is anyone in simular situation? i am 21 weeks pregnant on 40mgs of methadone it is starting not to hold me i dont want to up my dose and the dr.
Avatar m tn The most commonly recommended treatment for pregnant women who are addiction to heroin or other opiates is methadone maintenance treatment. All pregnant opiate-addicted women are advised to take methadone as a part of a medically supervised methadone maintenance treatment program. Methadone is currently the only medication approved for the addiction treatment of pregnant women who are addicted to heroin or other opiates. The fetus feels withdrawal symptoms during pregnancy.
Avatar n tn I have been on methadone for about 8 months now and it has been a life and soul saver. It's been a better 8 months than I've had in a long time. I no longer feel; any "high" off the methadone and am really learning to deal with life on lifes terms and not my own. It has made me a much better mother and probably saved my marraige. Here's the scary part, I'm pregnant. I'm so scared of the negative effects of the methadone on the baby.
Avatar n tn ve been on methadone through a treatment facility and there are lots of women that are on methadone as well that just had babies recently and a girl that I have seen that is pregnant now many months into her pregnancy and she is still dosing methadone. So safely you can do it under a Drs care of course. Good luck..
Avatar f tn I am pregnant with my 4th child and I'm on Methadone this is my 2nd pregnancy on Methadone my 1st pregnancy was ok on it however when I delivered my daughter didn't have any withdrawals but the doctor insisted I breastfeed after 2 weeks of breastfeeding my baby wouldn't latch good so I went to formula and 3 days later she had withdrawals so bad she was in ICU for 2 weeks being detoxed with opium. If I wouldn't have breast fed she wouldn't have had withdrawals.
Avatar n tn The downside is that your baby will most likely experience some withdrawal once born and will have to receive special treatment in the hospital to ween off of it. Methadone has been widely studied and used sense the 60s for pregnant women with opiate addiction. It is perfectly safe for baby and does not cause any problems for mother or child.
Avatar n tn s legitimate use for pregnant women. As far as I am aware, both suboxone/subutex carry a Class C classification for use during pregnancy. A Class C rating is described by the FDA as follows....
Avatar f tn t quit cold turkey while pregnant and they use it for addicted pregnant women. I only wanted to detox safely and STAY clean but I have no clue if I'm doing it all wrong! Any advice and please no judging, I made it a mission to quit as soon as I found out I was pregnant so I'm doing the right thing by quitting.
Avatar f tn Hi and congrats on your pregnancy! You really have to talk to an obgyn about this! REALLY! We can support you here with whatever you and your doc decide, but doing your own "heroin taper" while pregnant isn't safe for your baby or for you. I understand that you're scared. I would be too, but the very safest thing is to see an obgyn as soon as possible! Today, if you can! We will help you here with whatever you guys decide!
Avatar f tn It is dangerous to withdrawal while pregnant! Please call around and find a Dr asap. Your original OB must have been a stupid sob. He should have known that it is extremely dangerous for a pregnant woman to go through withdrawals. If he couldn't treat you he should have referred you to someone that could ( if it was me I would sue his *** for abandonment).
Avatar f tn The standard of care for pregnant addicted women is Suboxone or Subutex taper, even though maintenance Suboxone or Subutex is still considered safer than methadone because of much less risk of the respiratory suppression. As to the CPS, every state has different regulation and it may vary from hospital to hospital. It can also depend on your OB/midwife.
863968 tn?1239160068 My boyfriend has been on Methadone for about 8 monthes now and we recently just tried for me to get pregnant.. We are not having nay luck.. Will his methadone effect his chances of getting me pregnant?
Avatar f tn I was using hydrocodone, either 7.5 mg or 10mg about 3 times a day for quite a while before learning I was pregnant. I wanted to just stop cold turkey, but due to the physical withdrawls that was not an option especially being pregnant. I went to a pain management center to try to get on Suboxone. The Dr said they don't use Suboxone on pregnant women and that Methadone is the standard/safe method.
Avatar n tn i have a 19 yo daughter who is 7 months pregnant and been useing percocets and herion, we told her obgyn who said that if she was to stop useing now n up to her delivery date the baby would not be addicted, however throughresearch i have learned that if she quits cold turkey she could lose the baby, i took her to a methodone clinic and they want to put her on the methodone , she does not want the methodone she feels she can wean herself off with the percocets and she feels that that is safer the
782880 tn?1236135225 tell your obgyn for sure but i know lots of women that have had methadone babies and they were ok....just do what the doc think is safe for you and your little one.
Avatar f tn Thank you! The tramadol was for headaches and a swollen knee. I took the pregnancy test yesterday. I'm not very pregnant at all. Had last period in beginning of February. I want to be completely off by 8 weeks, not 20. I tried cold turkey and it was too much. I mentally feel happy. Its just the physical pains..body, mouth, tummy, heart beat..I would never take methadone. I don't even know what that is. This tram was prescribed. I don't drink or anything but tramadol.

Avatar f tn Forgive me if I'm wrong but I always thought it was the opposite and that Methadone was the better choice over Subs. I have no medical background...just a bunch of free time to read online articles...I guess your doc will tell you but I will share this article that Ive shared many times on this forum with other pregnant women in similar situations.
Avatar f tn t beat yourself over getting pregnant on the methadone. many woman have been pregnant on methadone and had a healthy pregnancy. yes you will beable to continue your detox after you give birth. they act ually use breastfeeding to help the baby with withdrawal after birth. the doctor told you that you cant breastfeed? look up breastfeeding and methadone. it is encouraged to help wean the baby. are you comfortable with your ob? if not I would look around for another.
Avatar n tn I am currnetly on 70 mgs of methadone and I am also 7 weeks pregnant. I have been on methadone for almost 2 years. I stayed at 50 mgs for a year then I started to come down but when I did that I felt terrible. I couldnt sleep or anything. So then I went back up and now I continue going up. I was on 65 mgs when I found out I was pregnant and the doctor justmoved me up 5 mgs. My OBGYN told me that if I detox or stop taking the methadone I would lose my baby.
Avatar f tn You should not be on methadone during pregnancy. The standard of care for pregnant addicted women is Suboxone or Subutex taper, even though maintenance Suboxone or Subutex is still considered safer than methadone because of much less risk of the respiratory suppression. Please get a second opinion before you get yourself and your baby into a whole lot of trouble.

Your baby deserves to be in your loving arms, being nursed at your breast right after it is born, not being for days or weeks in the NICU, not able to go home with you.
