631581 tn?1224844661 Since it was considerably less expensive than oxycontin I agreed to try it, and as it was as effective for pain control as oxycontin was I have continued with methadone for about 5 years now, with vicodin es for breakthrough pain. I take 20mg x 3 per day Basically I have sufficient pain control to function at about an 80% normal ability. Several months ago I was diagnosed as having seriously depleted calcium.
1774104 tn?1314215207 It was once prescribed for me when my physician began searching for a stronger opiate to control my pain. I had a reaction to the med and could not take it but thousands of ppl use it for pain management. I am aware of any opiate that you can take with Subutex. The actions of Subutex interferes with the actions of opiates. It is usually prescribed for addiction. However it is one of those drugs that are now being used for pain management by some physicians...
Avatar f tn When you first started taking Methadone, how long did it take for it to control your pain? How many days, weeks, etc.? My best friend was started on Methadone to manage completely debilitating chronic pain that is the result of multiple, major, back-to-back abdominal surgeries. Tonight marks the fourth full day of her being on Methadone, and she's really not feeling any better. How long can it take? Also, if you were put on other meds in combination with Methadone, what were they?

Avatar n tn Yes! I have been on methadone fo pain control. It's a common misconception that it is only for recovering heroin addicts. I also do know that it is given for long-term pain, and NOT pain that should go away after a surgical procedure. Drugs like percocet, vicoden , or oxycodone are given for post-surgical type pain. Methadone is a chronic pain medication, as well as treatment for opiate addiction.
Avatar f tn I can only tell you that I would stick with the hydrocodone if you need pain control. Methadone is a BEAR to get off of as it seeps into the bones and tissues. 10 mg of methadone is approximately equivalent to 30-35 mg of hydrocodone. So one dose of methadone at 10 mg would be like taking ALL 3 of your hydro 10's at once....with the benefit of the long half life (how long it stays in your system). We have a Pain Management Forum, too, if you are interested in that.
Avatar f tn The problem lies with being on it for addiction AND pain control. Methadone maintenance for addiction is used with the intentions of eventually, and gradually weaning you off of it someday. Methadone for pain control is used without the need to "taper off" of it someday. I don't think it's an opiate blocker at all, as I take it when my body gets used to used taking either oxycontin, morphine, or fentanyl (my tolerance to the drug increases).
653169 tn?1303446369 I still don't like the methadone. I'm just really tired and feel icky and still in pain. I don't think I want to give the methadone a full 2 weeks and then stop and risk withdrawals for something that isn't helping the pain. Only the oxycodone for breakthrough is helping the pain, but I'm gonna run out too soon cuz the methadones isn't working at all. He wanted me to give it the two weeks but I just don't feel good about that.
317787 tn?1473358451 I wonder how many I might find for hcv tx and pain. I was trying to help someone looking for help for pain control during tx. I was told by my doctor who helped me with the neurontin that I had to do whatever I had to do to get through the tx. I hope I have not offended anyone, that was not my intention http://www.medhelp.org/forums/search/75?
Avatar f tn Is it a good idea to replace high doses of oxycontin, that you have tolerated for years, no highs, pain relief, but still quite a bit of pain, for methadone, forever? My dack surgeon says the switch will kill me and would have to be done in the hospital over a long period, and even then, he refuses to even entertain the idea, and he has been my back dr. for15 yrs. (I had 2 back surgeries in 1995 abd 1996 and no relief after last surgery, except I could walk again.
Avatar f tn Now why would you feel guilt for that? My doc has me on methadone for pain, I also wanted to be on it in hopes I could control my drug cravings, my Dr. doesn't know about any addiction problems. Sometimes I wonder if suboxone wouldn't be better for me, would need a different doctor though.
Avatar m tn There are other options for pain control some can be ok and others dangerous. Here is some links that might help. http://health.yahoo.com/pain-medications/ketorolac/healthwise--d00273a1.
Avatar f tn In my own humble opinion if the person is looking for pain control, methadone is a far better option. In most instances I think methadone would almost always be the cheaper alternative. The one bad thing about methadone usage for long periods, the doses for pain always increase over time leading to very high dosages and severe dependence. In my experience with suboxone, it had no noticeable pain relieving benefits.
Avatar f tn I was previously on a variety of pain medications, oxicodone ms cotin I was then told from clinic I would have to go to a pain center and they would not be able to help me I then found out how addicted I was I went searching for a pain center to no avail and ended up finding a dr that would give methadone and the stuff they give to herion addics I could not believe I was now considered a addict I ended up seeing this dr and he gave me the methadone for pain 60mls a day I was doing fine at first
702513 tn?1228512697 He was referred to a Pain Management Clinic and they prescribed Methadone for his chronic pain. Methadone was the first drug that helped and he was able to walk pretty much pain-free. He has been on Methadone therapy for over a year and a half. He takes takes nine 90 mg tabs each day (3 in the a.m., 3 at noon, 3 at bedtime). After takes these opioid medications for several months (it was been well over two years), he began to feel sleepy during the day.
Avatar n tn I have been on the same dose (50mgs) of methadone for severe pain control for seven years. I was recently dx. with Central Sleep Apnea, and read that it could be caused by methadone and xxanyx . . (I take.5 mgs xanyx at night for sleep). Also, I moved to Iowa recently, and my regular MD here decided she didn't want to prescribe for pain control anymore..So I'm having a hard time finding a MD to presribe methadone..but suboxin docs are easier to find (is it the money?
Avatar m tn he is currently taking 160mg of oxycodone, but is building up a tolerance that is not supportable. so he oncologist gave him a subscription for methadone to control the pain more evenly over the day along with a script for Ultram for breakthrough pain. my husband was told to take 10mg methadone 3x a day along with the 160mg of oxy for the first three days until the methadone started working and then to taper off the oxy and onto the ultram.
1087566 tn?1282448730 I was on methadone for many years too control my pain. Methadone when using it every day does block other meds from working. The the only medication that works with methadone for break through is morphine. Ask your Dr. to give you morphine instead of oxycodone. This will help with your pain.
Avatar f tn However, the pain-relieving effects are shorter than the pharmacological half-life, so that dosing for pain control usually requires multiple doses per day. Depending on its form, Methadone can also be known as Dimepheptanol. As with heroin and all other opiates, methadone tolerance and methadone dependence usually develop with repeated doses.
Avatar f tn Hospice does its best to prevent suffering from the pain of cancer, and methadone is an excellent pain medication. Morphine is preferred for the treatment of COPD because a doctor can better control its effect on breathing, however, both morphine and methadone work in similar ways -- it is just that methadone suppresses the breathing longer. At end of life, it doesn't matter much which medication you use.
Avatar n tn Dela, I don't have any good words here as to how to sooth your grand baby, but just said a prayer for some peace for you and comfort for him. If you can't reach his Dr. tonight and he is still unsettled, I'd take him back to hospital just to be safe. So sorry for all you guys.
