939983 tn?1262528060 5 mg of hydrocodone is equivalent to about 15 mg of methadone. But this is for single dose not for long term pain management treatment. Most physicians beleive in the good practice to start low, go slow. Remember that methadone builds up in your system. It is stored in your body tissues. So it may take days before the full effectiveness of methadone is realized. Methadone levels in the blood will continue to increase for five days from the initial dose.
Avatar f tn For anyone who has ever taken Methadone for chronic pain management...When you first started taking Methadone, how long did it take for it to control your pain? How many days, weeks, etc.? My best friend was started on Methadone to manage completely debilitating chronic pain that is the result of multiple, major, back-to-back abdominal surgeries. Tonight marks the fourth full day of her being on Methadone, and she's really not feeling any better. How long can it take?

Avatar m tn I am about to have surgery on my foot Tuesday and am scared nothing will work for pain as I am currently taking 60 milligrams of Methadone daily for maintenance. He was going to prescribe me Percocet but am also afraid he will not give me anything because I'm on a program. If he does, will Percocet even work? What would be a good dosage for me? Can anyone help me here? I truly appreciate your time. Thanks a bunch!
2183581 tn?1369937547 But I have been in chronic pain for the past few years. And have been struggling for the past year with no insurance. Fighting with doctors dealing with stolen meds, bad massage therapist, bad acupuncture, and trying to deal with my life. Okay another the catch up my post for my question is related to this. I finally broke down and paid cash to see a pain management doctor in desperation hoping that he could help me get off the couch.
Avatar f tn Just wondering if Methadone can be used indefinately for chronic pain control???? Have a friend that was just put on it and am worried that they may have to be on it for the rest of their life... And, if you are on it for chronic pain control.. do you have to increase your dose or does it just stay the same???
1196820 tn?1306003662 I have been taking oxycotin 30mg twice a day and oxycodone 10mg prn for break threw pain put I am not getting good pain control on this I was on the fentyol patch that did not work because the tape messed with my skin I also was on methadone for 6 years put I thought I should change and give my body a break from it.
Avatar m tn 190mgs of methadone is a pretty hefty dose.I'm not sure you can blame the methadone for why he is 'messed up' all the time though, given he is abusing all the other drugs you mentioned.I will tell you that mixing methadone with other drugs you are abusing, especially benzos [the xanax] can be a fatal mixture and THAT could kill him. It's really not possible for us to tell you what his dose should be.
Avatar n tn Many anesthesiologists and doctors/surgeons are unfamiliar with the proper equalanegesic dosage of morphine for patients on methadone maintenance, or using methadone for pain. As a result, they make the mistake of giving you too little morphine when they are using that in place of or in addition to your methadone dose for pain. Sometimes they even think that the methadone you normally take will help address your post-surgical pain. This is in fact NOT the case at all.
Avatar m tn I think the big down side to your taking methadone for pain is that you may not have the quality of life, or be able to really enjoy or remember your last years. I'm afraid from what i've just been reading (and lost the link unfortunately) is that your time will go by in a blurr. stating that for those reasons suboxone might be a better choice for anyone wanting more clarity. But i guess the VA won't pay for suboxone either.
1800740 tn?1324237171 Can you tell me what milligram dosage suboxone he will prescribe for a 30 mg per day methadone user. Suboxone is very expensive & if I need more than 8mg per day I can't afford it in addition to the cost of the dr. visits.
Avatar m tn Good morning, I read your post and I am in the same situation as far as using methadone for pain management. I broke my back working for Federal Express in 1994 and after years of opiates for pain, they were no longer working and killing my liver. I have been on methadone for almost six years and for pain issues, it has been a blessing. However, there is a curse that goes along with that.
Avatar f tn I have been taking this dosage for about 2 years. I Have taken the oxycontin for two weeks then the methadone for two weeks. I never take them together on the same Day .....never. which one should I stop taking all together first??? I want off these pills. HELP!!
Avatar f tn TN is not a methadone friendly state. My pain management specialist had me on methadone for 12 years after trying other optoids with no success. I regained about 70% of my ability to function and good pain relief. I was able to go back to work after a year in bed. With the controversery over the increase of methadone related deaths my doctor decided to wean me off methadone and put me on pain patches, then morphine, then oxy everything.
210982 tn?1280983895 Yes although dosage and frequency of usage does matter. In my experience morphine, high dosage oxycontin and methadone are the most effective (and the most addicting) pain killers.
1436330 tn?1284666036 but you know how addicts are about following directions but hey if it works the more power to you were always looking for ways to help thanks for clarifying that for me....
Avatar f tn Basically you were reducing way too quick a drop....reducing by 10mls at a time is going to feel like hell, and i'm sure it was by the sounds of it. I was on 90mls methadone 2 1/2 years ago. After a couple months I started reducing by 5mls every two weeks until I got to about 55mls. Then I dropped by 2mls every two weeks. I am finally going off methadone - cold turkey now, the day before yesterday was my last methadone dose of 2.5mls.
2107861 tn?1346470646 Please do your research on methadone before going that route. I have seen so many who regret it. I'm not sure how old you are but keeping at the lowest dosages is really important if you're young. Tolerance happens and it's likely you'll have to up your dosage or change meds at times but trying to keep to lowest dosage you can is in your own best interest. There are other long-acting medications that may not cause trouble with your stomach.
Avatar f tn I was originally put on it for pain management but after a falling out with the dr wound up at a methadone clinic...I went from a moderate dose all the way up to 150ml as I built up a tolerance to the drug ..at first it managed my pain but then it quit working and left me with a huge addiction to feed ...I finely said enough is enough and decided to get off...when I went to the clinic they said they would do a medicaly supervises withdrawal it would be 2 ml every 2 weeks...
7567066 tn?1392068986 If you had methadone 10 days ago, then it's completely out of your system. If you have been on opiates for a number of years, they have changed your nervous system. It is going to take a long time to get back to "normal." I once stopped opiate-based medication for two years, and tried alternatives, like tricyclic antidepressants, which were more debilitating than the opiates.
Avatar f tn I took it for several weeks and it was not effective for me but others have found it to be very effective. There are so great articles on the rational and benefits of utilizing Methadone for pain control. If you search the www you should be able locate them. If not send me a PM and I will try to help you. Others that are using Methadone for Pain Control may post and offer their suggestions and opinions. I do know that some have not had a good experience with the narcotic.
Avatar n tn Several more teeth quickly followed before learning it was a possible side affect of taking Methadone for so many years. There was no warning, no pain or discomfort, and even though I had all of my teeth and only two fillings at the end of 2016, my dentist blamed me for poor dental hygiene. It now looks as if I will loose the rest of my teeth as they are rotting from the inside out. I now live cowering in my house, too embarrassed to go out due to all of my missing teeth.
