Avatar f tn Since I now longer take Metformin I am having trouble losing the last 20 lbs I need to lose. Is there a connection between weight loss and taking Metformin. Has anyone else experienced this?
Avatar f tn I kept on the very low carb diet, eating mostly proteins - fish fish and more fish I started losing weight really fast. I was originally at 112 - 115 keeping my weight at that by eating a ton on carbs. As soon as I was diagnosed I cut out carbs and now my weight is at 92 - 95 pounds. I am very small boned and when I was younger I weighed between 90 & 95 pounds until I turn 40 something. My morning blood sugar fasting when I was first diagnosed at hardly ever below 135 in the morning.
Avatar f tn Can a person who is not a diabetic take metformin for weight loss.. I need to loose 60lbs i have tried other prescription's diet pill's and i'am immune to them they work for awhile then nothing.
Avatar f tn Low carb diet is the best diet for women with pcos. especially if your taking Metformin. most people think that when you eat low carb all you eat is bacon. You eat lots of veggies...acceptable fruits, meats. there is lots of stuff to eat! I just lost 10 lbs....started diet and metformin March 1st I have done atkins before. I gained 10 lbs back over 7 years but that's when I went off the diet!
Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.
Avatar f tn Before going on metformin my weight was 277. I was put on metformin seven months ago and things have changed alot for me I dont eat as much as I use too. I take 500 mg twice a day. I take at lunch and dinner. The weight seem to just fall off without me really doing anything like execrise. Before I was tested for being insulin resistanced I craved sugary foods like candy. I would buy bags and bags of candy, but once i started metformin all those cravings stopped.
Avatar n tn metformin can help with weight loss, but typically like 10-15 lbs in someone that needs to lose it... and it's just an aid. I would say there is another reason... age, eating habits, etc.
Avatar m tn It depends on the medication. Metformin, the most commonly prescribed type 2 medication does help with weight loss. But mostly you need to cut carbs (good for blood sugar management anyway), reduce fat and increase exercise. Also make sure your thyroid is stable as that of course affects weight as well. Congratulations on your A1C!
Avatar f tn So it has definately helped with weight loss when I put some effort. So it does help with weight loss, but only when you are already trying to lose weight. If that makes sense?
1434731 tn?1382722384 I have PCOS and currently take Metformin, Provera (days 1-14 of each Month) I have Atypia Endometrial Hyperplasia (pre cancerous) My treatment plan is those drugs and weight loss. It is very important that I loose this weight because this pre cancerous condition is reversable!!!!!!!!!!!! I am just stuck in a rut and don't know what to do about it. I did low carb high protein diet 10 years ago and lost 56 lbs....I need to do this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar f tn Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan). I don't have diabetes and I haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, and I think Metformin is generally used for these two issues. So I'm concened whether I should really be Metformin. Can it mess up my insulin system?
Avatar f tn has any1 tried metformin does it really help weight loss and stop excess facial hair?
878888 tn?1319634044 t cause weight gain, it often causes weight loss (particularly when used in combination with a lower carb diet) and exercise. It is one of the first line drugs for treating diabetes and seems to be very effective for many people becuase it works by reducing insulin resistance. Crestor is a drug used to reduce cholesterol. It is unrelated to metformin. I have just been asked to add metformin to my daily cocktail. Am currently on insulin and still getting some highs.....
Avatar n tn However it does have other benefits for women with PCOS, including improving the likelihood of spontaneous ovulation, or making women who need clomid to help them ovulate more sensitive to clomid. Are your periods regular? What are your goals - weight loss? Pregnancy? If weight loss, a nutritionist might be helpful.
193609 tn?1292180293 ve also read quite a few articles that say some doctors prescribe metformin for PCOS and that helps them lose weight. Metformin is a drug typically used for type II diabetes, but apparently works well for PCOS as well. I also know a couple of people who are on it for diabetes or pre-diabetes and they've lost a lot of weight also. Might be worth checking into. At any rate - continue to eat healthy and exercise - you will need that no matter what med you might get.
Avatar n tn Hi Dear, First of all calm down!!! Second you should not up your dose unless your doctor told you to do so, I gradually increased all the way up to 2000mg of extended release a day but that was by my doctors orders only. Initially I started at 500 once a day for a week, and then to 500mgs twice a day for 1 week, and then to 500mgs three times a day for 1 week, and then eventually 500mgs four times a day for always...or in my case until pregnancy is acheived.
Avatar f tn t need to diet to lose weight, but you do need a diet that will help control blood sugars. Your levels of 120 - 150 are still too high. Can your doctor refer you to a nutritionist? ANyway, you need to control how much carbohydrate you eat at each meal. Following an atkins type diet (maintenance phase) / lower carb diet is the way to go. Best way to work out what you can and can't eat is to test 2 hours after eating and to see what your blood sugar levels are.
Avatar n tn I am on Metformin also.....I took it last year and couldnt get past the #2 issue, It went for a month! UGH but this time I am starting at 500mg for 10 days....so far just a little #2 issue. I can surely deal with it this time! I am doing a low carb diet (atkins) because It has worked for me in the past! I have been on it for 4 days now(same is the met so far) and I have to say it has not been bad...I have not seen any weight loss yet but I have been to tired to workout!
415867 tn?1323365503 (10) WEIGHT LOSS AND OTHER BENEFITS. Metformin may contribute to weight loss in some diabetics.(11) However, weight loss does not appear to be one of its primary benefits. Glucophage may also be of some value improving success with in vitro fertilization, lowering cholesterol, and improving energy.
Avatar f tn I started metformin about five weeks ago and the first four weeks weight was coming off fairly fast and this past week I haven't lost any, so my question is has anyone or is it frequent the Met will work briefly and then the weight loss will stop. 706214 tn?1244523049 because weigth gain makes the hormonal imbalance worse. although i hate medicines and their side effects metformin may help with weight loss aswell .
Avatar n tn Could Metformin cause thinning or hair loss? I started two Metformin 500 mg a day last May. Went on a locarb, no processed foods or alcohol diet. Lost 30#'s. End of August, switched to one Metformin ER 500 mg a day cause my A1C went from 7.4 down to 5.2 in 3 1/2 months. I have thought of a vitamin or iron deficiency, but I eat a lot of healthy foods and haven't lost weight beyond the 30#'S I lost last summer. I read that some people on here think Victoza caused their hair loss.
Avatar n tn Yes. Metformin helps you to lose weight. BUT....you need to stay on a diet to help this out. I too take metformin 500mg 2x a day and Yasmin. Been on both since 9/14/08, and have lost close to 60lbs. Try staying away from all sugary snacks and drinks. No soda, stick with water and ice tea (no sugar) or seltzer with lemon or lime. Eat lots of fruits and veggies during the day. I stick to 5 meals a day, 2 snacks and 3 meals (sometimes its 3 snacks).
594189 tn?1386916607 I am following the GI Diet and on Metformin as well. I am not sure how much the metformin is actually helping though. What I find hard is that being a bigger girl, I cant get pregnant buy I know plenty of women bigger than me that are pregnant not problem....just depends on the person I guess. Good luck with the BFP.
Avatar f tn Aside indulging in moderate amounts of physical exercise it is also essential to maintain a healthy diet plan. A healthy diet should consist of adequate amounts of calories with carbohydrates, proteins, fat and plenty of fruits and vegetables to supply vitamins and minerals. Skipping any of the food components is not considered healthy. Also when aiming at losing weight the protein intake may be slightly increased and the carbohydrate intake slightly lowered.
793305 tn?1493925518 I did. I have lost 18 lbs since I saw my dr. And a total of 38 lbs as I had already started on my own to lose weight. I think the increase dose of Synthroid upped my blood sugar. I need to talk to my endo too. She doesn't know about the weight loss yet. It's been just over 2 weeks since I quit taking my metformin. The stinging skin is almost gone. What a horrible thing. I'd that's what happens with fibermyalgia people, they have my sympathy.
Avatar f tn I have PCOS also and had extremely irregular periods (didn't even have but one period in a whole 2 years) and the only way that I can control mine is through diet and weight loss... I have to be between 130-140 pounds and I am 5'8" my fertility doctor said that it is so unfair that it happens that way but for some women that is the way it is.
