Avatar n tn On the report it did not show outside the normal but she said the usually accepted cut off for insulin resistance was lower than my level. I was placed on 500mg metformin, told to cut out process/refined sugar, carbs, and be re-tested. This process has continued and now I am on 2000 mg of metformin and my levels are actually higher. I have not been perfect with the diet but certainly much better than before.
Avatar f tn If you are type 2, insulin resistance is considered key part of the problem (though insulin resistance can also happening in Type 1). To address insulin resistance you can:- 1. Lose excess weight if you are overweight 2. Adopt a low carb or even a ketogenic diet (be sure to get enough protein and don't overdo the fats) 3. Regular vigorous physical exercise 4. Insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin.
Avatar f tn IR or insulin resistance is a sign of type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. I am assuming you are referring to either the A1C or fasting blood glucose levels. The first thing of course is a change in life style. This does not mean you have to stop eating everything but to be more judicious in your eating habits. In addition, regular exercise is paramount in reducing those :numbers". Talk this over with your physician and get started on these changes.

Avatar f tn Metformin is for insulin resistance. I have pcos, but I'm not insulin resistant, so I didn't have to take metformin while ttc. I did have to take clomid to ovulate, but I doubt they'd give it to a 17 year old. You have to have a semen analysis beforehand and have been ttc for a year.
Avatar n tn I have had some doctors say if you have PCOS you have insulin resistance and some say if you have insulin resistance you MAY have PCOS. So I would definately get your insulin levels checked. If your levels are elevated read about Syndrome X. It is the combination of PCOS and Insulin Resistance. Also, if they find that you have insulin resistance along with PCOS a high protein diet really helps! My endochrinologist recommended one when I was pregnant too. Good luck!!
Avatar f tn Thanks for your response. Is Insulin resistance a precursor to becoming a type 2 diabetic? I am confused? What tests can be done to confirm insulin resistance?
Avatar f tn My doctor suggests now to up the Clomid dose to 150mg and to take Metformin as well. I thought that Metformin was indicated for patients with insulin resistance (which is not my case), is this true or are there potential benefits of taking Clomid + Metformin even not being insulin resistant? Also, at which point will a person be considered Clomid resistant?
644577 tn?1224350916 I could not lose weiht before. High insulin levels makes weight loss extremely difficult. The Metformin can help to lower the insulin levels. I have both PCOS and hypothyroidism, so I know the struggle to lose weight. I actually found out about the PCOS when I couldn't lose weight once I got my thyroid levels right. It's a constant struggle, but we must keep exercising, as it protects our bones, strngthens our heart, aids in digestion, and improves insulin resistance.
Avatar m tn You need further information / evaluation. IF it is high insulin becuase you have insulin resistance then it can be treated with diet, exercise and a drug such as metformin. If it is high for other reasons, then it would need to be handled medically. I would expect that it would more likely be becuase of insulin resistance. Are you normal weight? Do you have any history of diabetes? How old are you?
Avatar f tn HI, Metformin is beneficial in women with PCOS, perhaps by reducing insulin resistance, and is often used if there are features such as insulin resistance, diabetes, or obesity. In a recent multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, metformin increased live-birth rates compared to placebo with the most beneficial effect seen in obese women. Treatment should be taken in consultation with a gynaecologist and an endocrinologist. Hope this helps.
903476 tn?1242237037 m well aware of insulin resistance, because I have it. Insulin resistance is, typically, determined by fasting blood glucose levels and the hemoglobin A1c test. The first thing I'd question is whether or not your thyroid levels are "well controlled" or simply "in range"... There's a huge difference. Because of the people we see in the Thyroid Community whose doctors say their thyroid levels are "fine", I have a particular aversion to that term.
Avatar n tn I have been on levothyroxine for 3 months now, I feel wonderfull and am loosing weight. However my Dr recently put me on Metformin for PCOS and Insulin Resistance, I feel terrible! Avatar f tn I have been on 2500 mg of Metformin for 13 years now due to being insulin resistant BC of Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Have been on several other medications for insulin resistance that did not work. The Metformin doesn't really work but works better than anything else I've ever been on. My sugar still runs 200 after fasting for 12 hours. Are there any tests that can be done to tell if you really need insulin?
