Avatar n tn On the report it did not show outside the normal but she said the usually accepted cut off for insulin resistance was lower than my level. I was placed on 500mg metformin, told to cut out process/refined sugar, carbs, and be re-tested. This process has continued and now I am on 2000 mg of metformin and my levels are actually higher. I have not been perfect with the diet but certainly much better than before.
Avatar f tn If you are type 2, insulin resistance is considered key part of the problem (though insulin resistance can also happening in Type 1). To address insulin resistance you can:- 1. Lose excess weight if you are overweight 2. Adopt a low carb or even a ketogenic diet (be sure to get enough protein and don't overdo the fats) 3. Regular vigorous physical exercise 4. Insulin sensitizing drug such as metformin.

Avatar f tn Liver enzymes are often elevated in type 2 diabetics. This can be related to the breakdown of stored glucose in the liver. Metformin often helps to return these elevated enzymes to baseline by regulating insulin and glucose levels.
Avatar n tn If you do not currently see an endochrinologist you may want to consult one. Most times PCOS goes hand in hand with insulin resistance. I have had some doctors say if you have PCOS you have insulin resistance and some say if you have insulin resistance you MAY have PCOS. So I would definately get your insulin levels checked. If your levels are elevated read about Syndrome X. It is the combination of PCOS and Insulin Resistance.
Avatar f tn Metformin is for insulin resistance. I have pcos, but I'm not insulin resistant, so I didn't have to take metformin while ttc. I did have to take clomid to ovulate, but I doubt they'd give it to a 17 year old. You have to have a semen analysis beforehand and have been ttc for a year.
Avatar f tn My doctor suggests now to up the Clomid dose to 150mg and to take Metformin as well. I thought that Metformin was indicated for patients with insulin resistance (which is not my case), is this true or are there potential benefits of taking Clomid + Metformin even not being insulin resistant? Also, at which point will a person be considered Clomid resistant?
644577 tn?1224350916 I could not lose weiht before. High insulin levels makes weight loss extremely difficult. The Metformin can help to lower the insulin levels. I have both PCOS and hypothyroidism, so I know the struggle to lose weight. I actually found out about the PCOS when I couldn't lose weight once I got my thyroid levels right. It's a constant struggle, but we must keep exercising, as it protects our bones, strngthens our heart, aids in digestion, and improves insulin resistance.
315318 tn?1353251800 Still, metformin could be useful to try in addition to the insulin as it could help reduce insulin resistance. Other things that help reduce insulin resistance are reducing weight (if overweight) and exercise.
Avatar f tn HI, Metformin is beneficial in women with PCOS, perhaps by reducing insulin resistance, and is often used if there are features such as insulin resistance, diabetes, or obesity. In a recent multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, metformin increased live-birth rates compared to placebo with the most beneficial effect seen in obese women. Treatment should be taken in consultation with a gynaecologist and an endocrinologist. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn I have been on levothyroxine for 3 months now, I feel wonderfull and am loosing weight. However my Dr recently put me on Metformin for PCOS and Insulin Resistance, I feel terrible! All I want to do is sleep. GI probelms not bothersome. My doc said to stop the Metformin and I feel normal again. How can I get my insulin down without feeling like crap? My pharmacist also said the 2 drugs interact with eachother. Please Help!
Avatar m tn You need further information / evaluation. IF it is high insulin becuase you have insulin resistance then it can be treated with diet, exercise and a drug such as metformin. If it is high for other reasons, then it would need to be handled medically. I would expect that it would more likely be becuase of insulin resistance. Are you normal weight? Do you have any history of diabetes? How old are you?
806995 tn?1265823176 08 metformin study did not make a strong case for adding metformin in all patients, however you might also want to look at a recent Khattab'10 study that looked at adding pioglitazone in geno 4s with HOMA1 gt 2. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19919569 They measured across-the-board improvement in SVR rates 60% vs 39% significant at 0.04. Geno 4s seem to be particularly susceptible to IR-related effects so this may not generalize. Your glucose levels seem pretty high - did your Dr.
594189 tn?1386916607 Since you have that, have you also been tested for insulin resistance and thyroid issues? They sometimes go hand in hand. Are on on any med for the PCOS? I've read that people are often given a script for metformin and it helps with both the PCOS and weight issues. Lori, I am so happy that you are doing well.
Avatar f tn I took it for pcos while pregnant but stopped after I was past the miscarry stage. My midwife told me that stopping it prior could actually cause a miscarriage...definitely check with your doc.
1490742 tn?1288600515 **** Also because the blood tests I listed above are important because around 75-80% of women with PCOS may have some degree of insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is thought to be one of the root causes of polycystic ovarian syndrome.
