Common Questions and Answers about Metformin in chf

glucophage

Avatar n tn Lassix is a diuretic medication to help rid the tissue of the fluids and correctly prescribed for CHF. Metformin is for diabetes11, and the prescribing doctor SHOULD be aware of the CHF condition!!. You may want to call a pharmacy for more information. Removal of fluids with the diuretic will reduce the heart's workload and provide relief for a recovery. The prognosis for heart failure depends on the underlying cause.
Avatar m tn There are a few beta blockers with evidence in heart failure -- they are carvedilol, metoprolol XL, and bisoprolol (not really used in the US). Atenolol does not have any data to support its use in heart failure, so I would recommend a different agent (one of the above). Which one to choose depends on your blood pressure and ability to take twice daily dosing vs once daily. Chlorthalidone is a perfectly fine diuretic, if you have blood pressure room to tolerate it.
Avatar f tn As a CHF patient, I of course weight daily. Was just recently put on Lasix in past week because of problems with fluid in lungs, and have been taking it religiously every day. My weight is the same, but I can't take as deep of a breath as yesterday, I'm slightly wheezing, and I can feel fluid come out of my throat with every little cough. This feels exactly how it felt when I was first diagnosed with CHF a month ago.
1648674 tn?1308696316 Yes, an autopsy would show fluids in the lung tissues. Also, the lung and heart have a normal size and weight, and an autopsy would weigh the organs and an over weight of the organ would indicate fluids in the lungs. Also, the left ventricle would have oversized heart walls, etc. Also, if necessary the heart vessels can be inspected for any plaque buildup and the advancement of the disease...
Avatar m tn My Mother is 92 slim 126 pounds she feels lightheaded and dizzy in the Mornings after taking her metformin but fells better as the day wears on . I believe the metformin lowers her blood sugars in the morning causing her to feel dizzy and spacy.
Avatar f tn t believe it would say right then and there a patient is in CHF. A patient with CHF has the symptoms of the disease and tests such as a BNP would diagnose that. People aren't in CHF 24/7 ; they have periods where they go into CHF; there are times when a patient who has been diagnosed with CHF may be doing well.
Avatar f tn Very recently I began noticing large white capsule looking things in my stool. I read other forums & I noticed a common thread that everyone was taking the medication Metformin. I'm also on Metformin extended release, do u think that could be the cause?
1132705 tn?1260482521 I am wondering if you think we will see more patients in the future getting filtration-type treatments for their CHF? As a Telemetry RN in an acute care facility, I see frequent admissions and then subsequent readmissions (over and over) for exacerbation of CHF. Our hospital has core measures that we follow on every CHF patient in order to ensure an Echo has been done within the past 6 mos and if warrented a Rx for an ACE inhibitor.
Avatar n tn She still coughs up crud a few times a day. Even before the chf she was having brief spasms in her shoulders and front legs about once a week. Over 4 years that progressed to now having spasms of her entire trunk about a hundred times day and losing control of her legs and dropping to the floor at least a dozen times a day. Lowering her head down to take a drink brings on both symptoms. Trying to fall asleep increases the body spasms.
1306788 tn?1334752651 I luckily had an excellent doctor at the hospital where I have been going for my antenatal appointments. She kept me on Metformin in my first trimester, I am now in my second trimester, and she has been monitoring my sugars, and I don't seem to need it anymore, so she has taken me off it. But she said that has been a very recent study, which was very comprehensive which has shown that Metformin is completely safe to use throughout the whole pregnancy where needed.
Avatar m tn my daughter is 23 and has been in CHF for almost 4 years her lowest ef had been 32 and now it is 45 a very good indicator of CHF is a blood test called BNP, brain natriuretic peptide. This test is a very good indicator for CHF... check with your cardiologist what those levels were at the beginning and what they are now...
Avatar n tn An x-ray of the chest will also let us know if the heart is enlarged in size as it usually does in the case of CHF. Also a clinical examination by a cardiologist may help. I will also suggest a pulmonary function test as a disease of the lung like COPD can also present with the symptoms similar to CHF. I hope that helps. Please do keep me posted. Kind Regards.

Avatar f tn Simply put, CHF, by itself, is not a death sentence. However, uncontrolled symptoms can be. CHF basically means your heart isn't able to pump enough blood to remove the fluids from your body. I have had CHF for about 3 1/2 years, and the most dangerous symptom of all seems to be fluid retention. Mainly because the disease is notorious for filling the lungs with fluid, making it hard to breathe.
1127040 tn?1289718662 Hi, The patients who are suffering from CHF usually have much higher heart rate and this is primarily due to the activation of the adrenergic / sympathetic system which normally gets activated at the time of stress and the presence of CHF is a continuous stress for a person. This is the reason beta blockers are used in patients of mild CHF to take care of the increased heart rate. Beta blockers decrease the heart rate and tend to improve the performance of the heart. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar f tn m not sure why you think Metformin only works on fat - in diabetes, the primary function of metformin is to stop the liver from over-producing glucose. "it only works on fat" - not sure what you mean.
Avatar n tn Hello I have a question, I have been diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy, Atrial Fib (AF), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)and an Enlarged Heart back in 1998. at that time my (EF) Ejection fraction was well over 60%. I went to my Doctor the other day and found out that my (EF) is at 30 - 40% from a EKG/Echo cardiogram report that dated back to 07/19/2005 now three years have gone by and now I'm worried.
323615 tn?1226193396 Congested heart failure (CHF) often impairs sleeping as the lungs get congested when inclined resulting in severe coughing spells, and hyperventilation.
323615 tn?1226193396 The higher the level the worse the CHF. BNP levels can go higher, sometimes seen in 4000 range. Increasing BNP level would mean CHF worsening. Creatinine levels are important for checking for kidney dysfuntion. My mom had a BNP level of over 1000 for a few years and I believe hers went up to over 3000 range. She had CHF for 12 years and passed away last September at the age of 70.
