Avatar n tn A side effect reported is it leaves a metallic taste. Unsure about the moldy taste. Also reported that certain generic brands of Metformin smell like fish, tires, and old smelly sweat socks. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to see what other brands they have.
446049 tn?1649005835 Interesting. Since you are on a generic, what about trying a different one (maybe even the one you were on before)? If that does't work, there are metformin alternatives. Unfortunately, there are those that don't tolerate Metformin. But the effect of the drug is necessary so finding an alternative is so important. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323128 This article goes into some alternatives. There ARE options!
Avatar m tn Glycomet is the generic term for Metformin (Glucophage). I just picked up my Metformin RX yesterday. It comes with a pharmaceutical paper that explains in detail everything one needs to know about the drug. This is what the attached pharmaceutical paper had to say about pregnancies: "Teratogenic Effects: Pregnancy Category 8 Most experts recommend that insulin be used during pregnancy to maintain blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible.
182352 tn?1231183410 my OBGYN just prescribed prometrium for low progestrone, and metformin ( the generic form of glucophage), due to my body not processing sugar properly. the prometrium bottle says DO NOT TAKE WHILE PREGNANT. i have read up on this & it seems to be a very common & helpful drug to take during early pregnancy. has anyone taken both, or either 1 alone while pregnant? my 1st pregnancy was a breeze & i hate taking anything during pregnancy. thanks so much.
Avatar f tn My Dr. wants to place me on Metformin or Glucophage. Does anyone here with MS take one of these? If so, what kind of problems might I expect? What good benefits do you receive? Any info is much appreciated!!!!
446049 tn?1649005835 I take it you were on a generic metformin? Was it a different maker each time? My pharmacy switched a medication month to month of a med I take for a chronic condition and I noticed new side effects each time. We requested that they keep it the same and that stopped. I'd get your pharmacy record if you can and see if they changed who supplied the generic you took. Worth a shot. Your situation now is that you don't tolerate the first line agent.
Avatar n tn I'm on metformin also and no drug interactions for me either. I have taken alot of different over the counter meds while on it.
Avatar m tn When a patent for a brand name drug expires, pharmaceutical company can make a generic form of the drug. Effexor patent expired in 2006, since then several generics are available. Those generics are usually cheaper but they must contain the same active ingredient(s), the same dosage form, at the same dose or concentration, and for the same route of administration. The generics are usually cheaper and can use different inactive ingredients and preservatives which can sometimes cause trouble.
Avatar n tn Perhaps liquid metformin may not make you constipated. Recently. in the past few days it came out in generic. I'd strongly consult my doctor to be on the safe side.
883607 tn?1241847511 You can try Webmd for generic names but most drs and many pharmacists have a 2 tier system, name brands and generic drugs and dispense them accordingly. Not all name brand drugs have generic equivalents so they don't use the generic names. Most pharmacists also are so busy that they only have time to verify the meds in the bottle against what is in it and read the possible side effects if needed by a patron.
415867 tn?1323365503 They were first given metformin and 19 of them resumed menstruating and showed indications of ovulation. But 10 required clomiphene (a fertility drug) in addition to metformin in order to show evidence of ovulation. Twenty women of the 48 (42%) became pregnant. Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with pcos yesterday & put on progesterone & metformin. No one in my family has pcos or any fertility issues except me so I have no idea what to expect from the meds or trying to concieve now..does anyone have pcos and can enlighten me a little???
645800 tn?1466860955 In the end this means if you are given a generic drug you should research the brand name drug in order to see the latest risks for the drug you are to take.

Avatar f tn This question is not exactly about Diabetes, but because metformin HCL is used in Diabetes treatment, I would like to know of any of you has experience with this medicine. Can you tell me about its side effects? Recently I went for a checkup and my doctor gave me Metformin for weight loss (It suddently went up to 99 kg though I was at 85 before and was following a strict diet plan).
245020 tn?1209657943 My Dr. just suggested I try metformin to try to make my cycles more regular. I took one on Friday and haven't taken one since because it upset my stomach so bad! Has anyone else had side effects with it and does anyone have any success stories because of it?
Avatar f tn We started with a generic, low dose birth control to regulate my periods and hopefully my hormones, but it made me incredibly depressed and I had to stop after the first month. We then tried metformin to help my weight by aiding my body in processing insulin. It made me incredibly sick and I stopped after a week. I am working on maintaining motivation to work out regularly, and my eating habits could be better, but they are not unhealthy by any means.
Avatar n tn I am taking Metformin for PCOS, and I am not trying to get pregnat, will this drug be effective to treat my PCOS. Also how does it help with weight loss.
1113668 tn?1258664195 If you have the diagnosis (you can always get copies from that doctor), they may be able to prescribe you metformin. The generic cost me something like $1.75 a month (my insurance paid if it was OVER $10, so it was not because of my insurance that it was so cheap). Even a regular clinic for general health could probably help you. Perhaps you can even call the doctor who diagnosed you and get them to prescribe you with something? That would probably be the best place to start.
225237 tn?1333138999 I recently started on metformin Er 500 mg at dinner. I have only taken it for for days.....I've been experiencing nausea, indigestion, frequent bowel movements. Has anyone else experienced this?? I'm so afraid of getting lactic acidosis!!!! The symptoms sound similar so how do you know which it is??!! Any help an advice would be appreciated!
Avatar f tn According to the MedHelp drug page on metformin, alcohol lowers blood sugar and may increase the risk of lactic acidosis while you are taking this medicine. Here's the link: http://www.medhelp.org/drugs/metformin/show/4596 You'll see this under interactions.
