Metformin for pregnancy

Common Questions and Answers about Metformin for pregnancy

Avatar f tn I was on this before (and during) my pregnancy for type 2 diabetes.
Avatar f tn Since your Doctor has started you on metformin the reason for the delayed periods is most probably the PCOS or polycystic ovaries. Metformin is not a drug for inducing menses, but it will help normalise your hormone levels and help with PCOS. Hope this helps. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations. You are requested to consult your Doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I had to stop taking metformin completely as soon as I got my pregnancy confirmed. I was taking it for PCOS and insulin resistance. My dr said I'll probably start taking it after delivery and after I finished breastfeeding.
Avatar f tn I dont know your fertility background but I was told I couldn't have kids and nor would I be a good candidate for fertility treatments, but, I had a healthy baby girl in July 2013 (prior to pregnancy was taking metformin For 1 year) and by May 2014 I was naturally pregnant (after baby #1 I was no longer insulin resistant so I hadn't taken metformin) again with a baby who's doing splendid.
Avatar f tn PS I've been a type 2 diabetes since I was 17. Can my diabetes harm my baby???
Avatar n tn So ive sbeen on metformin for a littoe over a month 1500mg and prenatal viatmins and im feeling discouraged and I need faih and hope that im not going through this struggle in vain... any success stories out there ??????
Avatar f tn Hi, I've been on metformin for a year and as soon as I told my doctor I was pregnant, he stopped my prescription for it although I've heard it might increase miscarriage chnaces there is no proof.
435139 tn?1255463991 Metformin regulates those things so that MOST women begin to ovulate again. Metformin is not the answer for you. Depending on what you're going through, Clomid is probably the best option. Just research it and discuss it again with your doc.
415867 tn?1323369103 Unlike most fertility treatments, metformin does not cause a risk of having a multiple or twin pregnancy. If metformin alone does not help a woman with PCOS who is trying to conceive, a fertility doctor may prescribe Clomid, as well. If metformin is prescribed for a woman with PCOS to help restore a regular, normal menstrual cycle, metformin can work within 4 to 8 weeks.
Avatar n tn I don't think it will have any side effects, I have been taking Metformin for a year now and I am currently 12 weeks pregnant THANKS to Metformin, injections and I seriously doubt it gives any side effects!
Avatar n tn So I was just put on metformin for an insulin resistance issue which is causing infertility. DH and I have been TTC for 2 years...ever since a m/c in 2005. I am not sure what the metformin is actually going to doctor predicted pregnancy in as early as 3 months...but I still don't understand what this medication is actually going to do or how soon it will do it...someone else on this med help?
Avatar n tn the metformin not only helps to regulate ovulation, if you are not ovulating on your own, but it also helps your glucose and insulin levels which is a big issue in someone with PCOS. I was diagnosed with PCOS after my 2nd mc and started with an RE. We tested everything under the sun, came up with PCOS and insulin resistance and a few other things that could have been slight possible issues with my miscarriages.
7878662 tn?1395007514 I started metformin a month ago due to high testosterone and not being able to get pregnant with my second. After all the blood work, I find out that my high testosterone what's killing of anything that I was conceiving without even knowing it. I was diagnosed with PCOS even though I still get a period every month regularly and I test positive for ovulation every month. I am now regular every 30 days and this is the first month I will try to conceive on metformin.
1512722 tn?1313701479 Hey ladies i just started Metformin today! can i get some stories of bfps using it? or just you experience on it?
330481 tn?1309491843 I have been taking the metformin for a little over a month. I've lost about 10 pounds from it. Mainly because it made me feel nauseated, so I didn't want to eat. It's getting a little better now though. My sister-in-law took it for PCOS, and she didn't need to take clomid or anything, it regulated her enough that she ovulated on her own. She's pregnant with twins right now. I just had a miscarriage in November, so I'm waiting 'til around February to take the clomid again.
Avatar n tn So I was put on 1500 mg of metformin 3-4 months ago I tried it for 4 days I was so sick I went off. Ever sense I have been feeling guilty. I am working on loosing weight and some exercise....I think I am going to try the metformin again. Maybe start out at 500mg...and work my way up. Has anyone else done this....when do you take your metformin. Can I take it at night and if I do takr it at night do I have to take anything with it. I dont want to eat before bed.
330481 tn?1309491843 Hi, I took metformin for almost two years. It helped me lose weight but you need to have blood work done about every 3 months to make sure it's not harming you. I got really sick and couldn't eat for a week. I went to the doctor and they told me to get off the meds because it was damaging my liver. So it works for pcos but you need to be careful. I wouldn't drink a lot of liquor while on this medication. Hope this helps.
918479 tn?1272841752 If it does turn out to be the metformin though I wouldn't give it up I would check into the Fortamet (world of difference for me anyway, I had a TON of side effects on metformin, not the first one on Fortamet, it costs more though so when I thought my body could handle it I talked to my doctor and switched back to the metformin). If nothing else you could always quit taking the metformin for a week and see if you get to feeling better then start back on it and see if the sickness returns.
Avatar f tn HI, After starting treatment with metformin, it may take a few months to achieve a pregnancy. This will also depend on your hormonal levels. Hence a careful follow up with your gynaecologist is necessary. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn Hi, I dont think Metformin is the cause for your problem. I have used it for more than 3 months and did not have any problem during AF. I have PCOS and hence metformin was prescribed for insulin resistance. btw why were you taking metformin?
Avatar n tn I cant really say how long it will take to achieve. But for me (after 3 miscarriages)I took metformin for 5 months and got pregnant. I continued to take until about my 12th week of pregnancy and in Feb gave birth to a baby boy. I swear by metformin, I think it is great and for me I am convinced that my son was born bc of it. Keep trying and dont give up. Did your doctor say anything to you about polycystic ovarian syndrome..just wondering bc thats why I was on metformin.
1444838 tn?1456174552 Went to my doctors last week & she was telling me that she going to put me on metformin after I have had my Hernia operation she said she going to wait couple months after my operation & put me on the metformin to help me concieve, has I have P.C.O.S & I was just woundering if any one eles has had metformin & has P.C.O.S & if they have concieve while being on metformin ?
Avatar f tn I have been on it before and all thru my pregnancy for my diabetes. It wasn't enough alone for my sugar during pregnancy so I also needed insulin.
1574695 tn?1322594197 What are you taking metformin for? Do you have diabetes? Do you have PCOS? Is the doctor would said to stop taking it the same one who prescribed it? I did a little research and metformin is Pregnancy Category B. It is generally considered safe for pregnant women. The article linked above states that metofrmin is generally continued throughout the pregnancy if you are taking it for PCOS.
374593 tn?1257883550 Hello! For those of you that have taken metformin during pregnancy, at how many weeks did you discontinue it? also did you just stop it cold turkey or taper it down ( i take it twice a day now and do i just stop or take it once a day for a while?) I am 33 weeks pregnant, and have had severe morning/all day sickness the entire time, they think stopping the metformin at this point may help..
Avatar n tn I am on metformin and am 9w 2d. I have been on it since March (I got a bfp June 26) and my dr is keeping me on it for the first trimester. She said there is some research that it helps prevent miscarriage, but it definately won't hurt anything. I also had a previous m/c so she did an u/s at 6w 4d and we saw the hb! I have my first prenatal appt today. I am sorry for your loss and congrats on your bfp!
Avatar f tn In Canada, metformin is under clinical study for pregnancy. The officially approved treatment is insulin shot. I'm taking insulin but diet and exercice is more than needed to keep it under control. If your physician prescribed it He most think it is safe.
120255 tn?1197070547 I was reading some stuff online today and saw that a lot of people were told not to take Metformin during pregnancy. Has anyone taken it (or stopped) during pregnancy? I don't go to the doctor for another month, though I put in a call. I'd just like to hear people's stories. Thanks!
