Avatar f tn For example, according to one study, which looked at 39 women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and hyperinsulinemia (excess insulin in the blood), treatment with Metformin for women with PCOS resulted in a decline of insulin as well as total and free testosterone, leading to significant improvement of clinical manifestations of Hyperandrogenism (the excessive production of androgens in women) and an improvement in menstrual cycles (3).
Avatar f tn The addition of dexamethasone, to a clomiphene regimen may increase the likelihood of ovulation by suppression of ACTH and any circulating adrenal androgens. For women who are unresponsive to clomiphene, the oral hypoglycemic agents like metformin could be of little help, or pioglitazone, may bring resumption of regular cycles and ovulation. These agents reduce the hyperinsulinemia and hyperandrogenemia in PCOS. These are actually medically prescribed medicines for PCOS.
707544 tn?1228949819 No Metformin is not for high prolactin level but for impaird glucose tolerance or hyperinsulinemia. You probably had your pituitary gland imaged with an MRI. Dostinex would help your hyperprolactinemia but would not necesarrily help you ovulate. You may have to take ovulation induction drugs like Clomiphene or injectable FSH like Bravelle to make an egg to ovulate. I presume that you are seeing a specialist in fertility called a Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility specialist.
Avatar f tn I am kind of weary though about the insulin diagnosis, because when they said that they gave me a perscription for Metformin, which I thought was for diabetics who don't produce enough insulin. Do I still need to take an iron supplement because I work out 2 hours a day and at the end, my energy is really low.
Avatar f tn xed with hyperinsulinemia and mild hypothyrodism in Feb 2011 and put on metformin and eltroxin. Husband does not have any problem. Other than that, I have joined a gym and eat a more sensible diet. My numbers (sugar, insulin & thyroid) are now in the normal ranges since June 2011 and Doc suggested TTCing naturally for 3 months. I have lost around 12 kgs (~ 26.45 pounds) since Feb 2011.
568322 tn?1370165440 Now we can use this study to get doctors to test people for insulin resistance and prescribe Metformin. Success rate is about to go up.....yes! TRIC-1 Study: Metformin Added to Peginterferon alfa-2a and Ribavirin Improves RVR Rate in Treatment-Naive Genotype 1 HCV Patients With Insulin Resistance.
Avatar f tn maybe its hyperinsulinemia Hyperinsulemia means having too much insulin in the bloodstream. Hyperinsulemia is a common condition in Type 2 diabetes with underlying cause of insulin resistence. It is a somewhat paradoxical situation because you can be diabetic and still have too much insulin in your body.
1907238 tn?1340711313 i was on metformin for almost year and clomid for 6 months only conceived once and ended up with MC. also if you are over weight they give metformin to help you reduce weight as well especially in PCOS. PCOS is never shown in blood test you need a good scan... :) best of luck anyway... hope it works for you....
Avatar f tn See about having a GTT done. If they are looking for hyperinsulinemia, they may do a five hour rather than a three hour and they might check your sugar levels every half hour instead of every hour. That is what they did with me. If you are having other symptoms of MS, you may want to see a neurologist about this to rule out MS.
Avatar n tn Hi, I dont think Metformin is the cause for your problem. I have used it for more than 3 months and did not have any problem during AF. I have PCOS and hence metformin was prescribed for insulin resistance. btw why were you taking metformin?
Avatar f tn I agree with can-do-man that there will be patient assist programs for the new drugs just like there are for SOC. There's also going to be a big change in US medical provision when Obama becomes prez so you never know, that might provide for you. I am in a similar situation to you, hard-to-cure and already exposed to telaprevir but I think there will be a cure for me within 5 years and for you too.
1408380 tn?1281388562 I have been taking Metformn for over 3 years for my PCOS and never had an issue with kidney pain. I actually have had no problems at all taking it, I lost 50 lbs on it and stopped making cysts. my question to you is how much were you taking a day?
Avatar n tn Is Lantus and Metformin ok to take or is the Metformin harmful to my liver? I know several with Hep-c who take Metformin.
Avatar n tn Hello, I am not familiar with the use of L-Carnitine for medicinal purposes so I am afraid I am not the best person to ask in this regard. In regard to your blood sugar questions: hypoglycemia is defined by numbers so if your sugars were normal this likely is not truly what you had. You may have had what we call "relative reactive hypoglycemia" where you feel symptoms from a drop in sugars from high to lower but the number does not actually become low.
Avatar n tn Hi there. I am about to start metformin for my PCOS next week at the start of my new cycle. Will this help me to ovulate and help improve my chances of conceiving? We are trying for baby number two, this will be our ninth month. I was put on clomid 50mg to help us conceive our first baby two years ago. My transvaginal sonogram showed i have PCOS on my left ovary, but my right ovary was clear. I also have a tilted uterus. Would this hinder our chances of conceiving?
944631 tn?1246280052 Metformin is a glucose lowering drug, phentermine is for weight loss and dicyclomine is for irritable bowel. You need to ask this doctor if he has run a glucose test on you and if he has determined that you are diabetic. I am a diabetic and I take metformin...if you are NOT a diabetic, ask the doctor why he has put you on metformin!! Metformin will lower your blood sugar and you need to be informed about possible hypoglycemic events...call your doctor now! Please let us know what he says...
Avatar n tn "...metformin which made me physically very drained, not tired or weak, but very loose,..." All medications come with side effects. Not everyone tolerates them equally. One side effect of Metformin is weakness. Also, taking Metformin in quarters is below the recommended dose and is so minimal, I highly doubt it has any affect on helping to lower your glucose [blood sugar] level.
Avatar f tn m having with my treatment. I have been diagnosed with PCOS for more then 5 years now. Originally I started on the regular Metformin but due to gastritis could not continue. While I was on it I lost weight my monthly cycle was regular. Some time later my symptoms re-occurred. I began taking Metformin XR (slow release) and suffered no side effects. However, my symptoms are getting worse and the medication is not helping. I am on a low fat low carb diet and get regular exercise daily.
Avatar f tn The cycle only lasted 22days I bleed for 4 days which is the norm for me. I am currently on cd25 waiting for AF. I was wondering has metformin regulated you gals cycle and was it consistent? You know 30, 32, 34 day cycles. If you laedies could tell me your experiences on metformin that would be great. How long did you experience the side effects? I ate fruit yesterday and it went right through me. I thought you shouldn't eat greasy food with it.
Avatar n tn I have been Type I diabetic for 24 years and have two children. I did not know what metformin was, so I did some research on the internet and found out it is also called glucophage. Here is a website you might find helpful: http://otispregnancy.org/pdf/metformin.pdf. It was very informative.
