Common Questions and Answers about Metformin for fat loss

glucophage

Avatar n tn As with ANY treatment, it is effective for most people but not everyone. Also, some people do have weight loss as Metformin helps their body use insulin. Again, it varies from person to person.
Avatar f tn Wow...I am not sure I am ready for insulin, or for that matter Metformin. I do not want to take Metformin and become ill, especially since I still work full time. But in a few years - I may try all of these. My weight seems to have leveled off. Not losing any more weight, I uped my carb intake, was practically eating no carbs. I will wait to see what my nex A1c is ... Thaks so much for your input ... I have never heard of LADA type diabetes.
Avatar f tn t say for sure that losing the weight will make you respond better to the meds, but losing weight with PCOS is a good thing since most doctors believe that fertility will be increased with weight loss. I lost weight and got pregnant after taking metformin sporadically (side effects were awful). I wasn't even trying to get pregnant then. Unfortunately, that pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage.
Avatar f tn Can a person who is not a diabetic take metformin for weight loss.. I need to loose 60lbs i have tried other prescription's diet pill's and i'am immune to them they work for awhile then nothing.
1090984 tn?1463769850 I am hysterical now and the weight is really heavy in my middle section, I never gained weight there in my life. I was thinking of going on metformin, I hearf that was good for weight loss. Any ideas what could be going on??
Avatar m tn Conscious of eating less than 1500 calories per day/ 35-50 carbs. Can not lose weight. I take metformin, zocor, toprol, lotrel ( minimal dosage ) What can I do ? Maximum effort - no results.
Avatar f tn Muscle weighs more than fat, so as you are building muscle and exchanging it in place of fat, your weight may not change much, but you are building healthier tissue. try taking measurements of your thighs, arms, hips and waist and keep track of it weekly. That will help you to know you are making progress, even if you don't see significant weight changes. Good Luck!
Avatar m tn It depends on the medication. Metformin, the most commonly prescribed type 2 medication does help with weight loss. But mostly you need to cut carbs (good for blood sugar management anyway), reduce fat and increase exercise. Also make sure your thyroid is stable as that of course affects weight as well. Congratulations on your A1C!
Avatar f tn Hey all, I was just deemed insulin resistant due to polycystic ovarian syndrome.. I work out hard, 4 days a week and wasn't losing weight, so I was tested and sure enough.. So now, I've been on metformin for about a week.. I was on a low fat high fiber diet before, switching to low carb is been tough.. any tips I mean I eat one chicken cutlery and I'm bloated and full.. a handful of baby carrots and grapes and I'm done.. any portion advise?
Avatar n tn Hi there. People always get so hung up on their weight! BMI is based on incredibly broad averages, and doesn't work for anyone who is at all athletic. For example, my partner has a BMI of around 29 (well into the obese category) because he has a lot of muscle mass and is therefore heavy for his height - he's actually at the low end of healthy when it comes to body fat, and is exceptionally fit.
Avatar n tn ve got the Metformin, which helps with weight loss A LOT. Metformin is good for cutting away at belly fat, which is the most dangerous to women's health, so you got lucky there!! My family has a history of problems with Metformin, so I need to still convince my doc to let me use the drug. I'm working on that right now. What kind of diet does your doc have you on? And are you taking any meds like Provera?
6918143 tn?1386340447 PCOS and insulin resistance are actually 2 different conditions, though many wome with one, also have the other. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and is used by the body for handling sugar/carb intake. Insulin is referred to as "the fat storage hormone". Any sugar or simple carbs taken in, will be shuttled to fat cells, if not used, quickly, for energy. With insulin resistance, the body doesn't use insulin effectively.
1434731 tn?1382722384 You might also need to vary your diet; maybe increase by a couple hundred calories/day, for a day or so, then decrease by that much for a day or two. Again, with the same number of calories every day, your body gets used to it.
1141673 tn?1261218041 Hi everyone! I will be starting on Metformin tomorrow for the first time and am wondering if anyone else out there is on it? If so how is it going? Any good/bad news would be great to hear.
Avatar f tn m having with my treatment. I have been diagnosed with PCOS for more then 5 years now. Originally I started on the regular Metformin but due to gastritis could not continue. While I was on it I lost weight my monthly cycle was regular. Some time later my symptoms re-occurred. I began taking Metformin XR (slow release) and suffered no side effects. However, my symptoms are getting worse and the medication is not helping. I am on a low fat low carb diet and get regular exercise daily.
Avatar f tn Metformin may lower the risk of miscarriage or gestational diabetes in women with PCOS, but this has not yet been confirmed by research. Metformin is probably safe to take while you are pregnant. But because metformin is only FDA-approved for the treatment of diabetes, you should talk with your doctor about the use of this medicine for reducing your risk for miscarriage or treating PCOS symptoms. Side Effects The most common side effects of metformin are: Nausea.
Avatar n tn I am on Metformin also.....I took it last year and couldnt get past the #2 issue, It went for a month! UGH but this time I am starting at 500mg for 10 days....so far just a little #2 issue. I can surely deal with it this time! I am doing a low carb diet (atkins) because It has worked for me in the past! I have been on it for 4 days now(same is the met so far) and I have to say it has not been bad...I have not seen any weight loss yet but I have been to tired to workout!
688022 tn?1275944889 t already they can see why you are having so many miscarriages and do things to try and prevent them. Clomid will not prevent miscarriage it only helps you ovulate. Also ask about Metformin for the pcos its a common drug the the RE will put you on.
Avatar n tn The reason for this is Metformin is not recommended for people with Liver issues . It was prescribed to me by a Diabetic Nurse and I am amazed that a Nurse is allowed to prescribe dangerous drugs at all without a Doctors recommendation . My advice would be to reduce your metaformin slowly over several weeks and carefully monitor your blood sugar levels. See how your bodys sugar and fat processing mechanisms cope.
878888 tn?1319634044 I have 2 questions, If I take Metformin with evening meal and thyroid in am is there still a chance for interaction? Is there a good diet that works for people who have somewhat high blood sugar level but not at extremes that will help me lose weight. Sorry for the book, but am really concerned as I am a single mom with a 15 yr old still to raise and I must be able to keep working to support both of us.
Avatar f tn I have been on metformin for about 4 years. I was overweight and finally joined a weight loss group (TOPS). I managed to lose about 36 lbs. Having lost the weight I can now manage my diabetes with my diet. Since I now longer take Metformin I am having trouble losing the last 20 lbs I need to lose. Is there a connection between weight loss and taking Metformin. Has anyone else experienced this?
1412179 tn?1281699815 My post breakfast reading is always higher (160-180) while my post lunch reading is 110-130. Does it mean Metformin takes time to show effect and I should reshedule my intqake of Metformin?
Avatar f tn Hello all, I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and I would just like to say thank you to everyone, I feel so much better reading everyone's stories and experiences, it lets me know I'm not alone. While I have many nasty symptoms from PCOS, my thinning/balding hair seems to be a big problem. I have probably lost almost half my hair at this point (almost all of it from the top of my head and hairline).
Avatar n tn Can you go vegan after say, 6 months, after you, hopefully, will be taking off metformin? Even after you are off metformin you still have to watch for carbs like everybody else. Metformin only helps if you keep the daily carb intake very low. I know 2 ppl who are/were on metformin. One guy, had a good doctor who gave him good advice, and in 6 months later he was diabet2 free and, what's more, presently doesn't take any medicine for diabetes.
Avatar f tn Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is known for causing weight gain/inability to lose. I know that some patients are given metformin to help control PCOS. Have you talked with your doctor about this? In addition, often other conditions, such as insulin resistance and thyroid diseases go hand in hand with PCOS. I strongly suggest that you get tested for insulin resistance and get your thyroid levels tested (TSH, Free T4 and Free T3).
