Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and stomach problems

glucophage

194838 tn?1303428544 Both Metformin and Januvia have stomach discomfort side effects. I agree with caregiver, take Metformin with food to lessen the chance of this. I take my daily dose half way through my mid-day meal. "I have had stomach pains and upset stomach since being on them" Did this start when you began taking Januvia? Januvia has a side effect that makes Metformin even harder to tolerate: by boosting GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) it may cause the lower stomach valve to remain shut.
Avatar m tn Hi, I am a 40 year old male who, and have been fit and healthy until a few years ago. I started getting pains in my stomach and back (right side) and down the front of my right leg, no pressure when urinating, and feeling generally unwell (sick, dizzy). I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes last year and have been on metformin for about 2 years. This has controlled the blood sugar levels but all the symptoms are still present.
Avatar f tn It is definitely nice to only have to take them 2 times a day instead of the 3. I do, however, always eat and then take my pills otherwise I have severe stomach problems. I don't know if that would help anyone having problems, but I'd thought I'd offer my experience.
Avatar f tn Doctor gave me metformin to reduce weight.does over weight is the issue to conceive?I have weight on my belly and stomach like upper stomach n lower stomach....Pls have a look on my problem and reply me. Thanks.
Avatar m tn It started with pains in my stomach and back (right side), no pressure when urinating, and feeling dreadful (sick, dizzy). I was diagnosed last year with type 2 diabetes and have been on metformin for about a year. I still have the pains in my stomach (right side and sometimes down the front of my right leg) and no pressure when urinating, and I always have a rash on the glands of my penis. I also still feel unwell.
Avatar f tn I have to agree. I've taken Metformin for several years for my Diabetes and have had stomach issues every once in a while. I've also taken Zyprexa, which added pounds for me.
Avatar n tn I went to my computer and looked up bloating, Metformin, afib. All signs pointed to GERD can cause afib. And Metformin can cause gas, bloating, digestive upset. The pieces of the puzzle were put together. I just happened to have gas-x in my bathroom and immediately took 2. Within one hour the gas and bloating were gone and so was the afib. I literally got on my knees and prayed that I was on the right path to health.
Avatar f tn I have been on Metformin for about 3 yrs. I still get sick to my stomach and very loose stools and painful gas. Somedays I get no side affects and other days its unreal. Thought I would get use to it. I am on it for serveral reasons. No AF, cystic acne and to top it off type 2 diabetes.Since taken it,no skipped periods and no big cyst on my face, That last one is a blessing in its self.
Avatar m tn mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and gas. The gas is made up primarily of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and may include methane, that is mixed with nitrogen and oxygen from room air that is inhaled or swallowed. The carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane are produced by bacteria in the large intestine while they digest undigested food that reaches the large intestine.
Avatar f tn I'm taking 1500mg per day and take 1 pill with each meal. I work night shift and convert to days when I'm off so my meals don't always match up. I find that skipping a pill will increase my risk of stomach upset so I have to take them will each meal. I've also found that eating high carb fatty meals increases my stomach upset and nausea. Sometimes I take only 250mg if I know I'll ony be able to snack instead of eat a full meal or if I have to be NPO for blood work.
1447404 tn?1284604228 The only side affects i ever had from metformin was stomach problems if I didn't stick to my diet in the first 2 weeks. It would cause stomach cramps, bloating and diarrhea. After the first 2 weeks were over, things went into place and I never had any issues again with it. Birth control can sometimes cause weight gain...but not every woman is the same. I never had weight gain with Yasmin. Sleepiness is not a side affect of metformin. And also, not every woman who has PCOS has diabetes.
Avatar f tn My first 4 days on Metformin I felt like hell! But my body got used to it.
245020 tn?1209657943 I take 1000mg of Metformin a day. Metformin will upset your stomach, cause diarrhea, etc. but that only lasts a couple weeks. I'm currently in my 2nd month of taking Metformin and I'm taking a pregnancy test at the end of the week! Did your doctor not explain the side effects? Upset stomach is a normal side effect. Check out soulcysters (dot) net and click on their Metformin forum.
1888358 tn?1320969676 Hello, I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd ask a couple of questions. I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with Type 2 Diabetes (I'm 33), and I've never really been under good control. I have been prescribed Metformin, but it always makes me so sick (Low Blood Sugar feeling as well as diarrhea) so inevitably I stop taking it. My first question is, does anyone know how long it typically takes for these side effects to subside?
Avatar m tn I have been on Synthyroid since may but now I was recently prescribe Metformin. I forgot to ask if it safe to take Metformin with Synthyroid at the same time. Does anyone if it would be ok?
Avatar f tn I heard that if Metformin causes side effects that I should get extended release Metformin and I should not have any of the side effects; stomach problems etc.... Has anyone else heard this?
Avatar f tn Hello, I took zyprexa (antipsychotic) for 4 years and have taken cymbalta (antidepressant) for 5 years. I gained a lot of weight (50lbs), and started to have insulin resistance problems and high glucose levels. I was put on metformin 500mg once a day for a year. I was told that if I lost the weight my numbers would go back to normal. I lost 40lbs, I am exercising and eating healthy. My doctor told me that I could quit metformin.
1187113 tn?1320691496 t able to handle the side effects of the medication. I am now 24, and I am Metformin again..I am on 500 mg BID (twice a day), and I have been on it for 3 months now. I am moving up to 750mg BID in two weeks. This time around, I have been ok. I did get some stomach problems at first with loose stool (TMI sorry), but I havent had any reallly big problems. But my doc did say that it I can't do the 750 mg BID that we would cut it back, and try again later.
Tbd Not so sure that you're doing anything wrong. Metformin can be had on some peoples stomach. I'm fortunate and don't have that problem. I would speak to your doctor about the problem and see if they can come up with a more effective, less agonizing med to help you get your BG levels under control. (Make sure you are taking your meds with food or shortly before or right after eating....) Get exercise, drink tons of water and monitor your BG levels.
225237 tn?1333138999 I have been on metformin for a couple of months now. When I first started I had some of the stomach problems. For almost the past week I just haven't felt myself, I have frequent loose stools... Can this be from the metformin?? Should I be worried?? I also suffer from anxiety so it really worries me... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Avatar n tn Metformin by itself sometimes helps women ovulate more regularly, but not always. Clomid is a fertility pill, and clomid and metformin together will work the help women with PCOS ovulate approximately 65%-70% of the time. Combining clomid with metformin is often our first step for women who are trying to get pregnant but not ovulating. If that does not work, fertility injection drugs work 90%+ of the time. For sure you cannot get pregnant while on the birth control pill.
Avatar f tn I am living proof and suffered a miscarriage because I listened to my doctor and stopped. I was taking metformin up to 5 weeks and lost my baby right before I hit the 8th week. You need to continue taking metformin until the baby is not dependent on your hormones anymore and they are depending fully on the hormones from the formed placenta...that is usually after the 12th week. I was diagnosed with PCOS in Feb of 2015 and I got my BFP at the end of April. I lost my baby a few days ago.
Avatar f tn Yes same as diabetic meds its supposed to lower insulin levels because its said ppl with pcos have higher levels of insulin and can cause problems

Avatar n tn I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if they have experienced food sensitivity and severe gastrointestinal problems on the metformin, and if these symptoms can be dose dependent. If it is the metformin, I was hoping I could tolerate a lower dose rather than stop it entirely. Thanks so much for any info.
Avatar n tn I'm newly diagnosed diabetic and taking Metformin 500mg 2x a day. I have been taking it for about 10 days and have had the worse cramps and stomach pain! I'm not sure if it is my pre menstrual, which never feels like this, or the new medication. Has anyone had stomach pains or cramps as side effect of Metformin? I'm also taking Lisinopril-HTCZ.
1843973 tn?1326131704 I have not tried to get pregnant but I also have PCOS and right now have lost 40 lbs on metformin it does mess with your stomach a bit but I have no problems if I have some sort of meat in my meal it definitely helps. My doctor is a firm believer of metformin she also has pcos and she has 4 healthy kids! Good luck!
