Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and nausea

glucophage

Avatar m tn I am only taking byetta, and no oral hypoglycemics (metformin, etc.)I have lost 29 lbs in that length of time, primarily due to decreased appetite, nausea, and vomiting. I understand that this is in all likelyhood due to delayed gastric emptying. My question: Is this ever going to get better??? All of the information I have read leads me to believe that it probably should have, but nope....no way....same ol', same ol'.....shot, eat, nausea, vomiting. Repeat (excuse the pun) ad nauseam.
Avatar f tn I was recently dx as pre diabetic and put on Metformin. I noticed I would run a low fever, be severely nauseous and dizzy after taking my meds. I never knew that the Metformin could cause it. I stopped and now I am fine it cleared up within days of me stopping the metformin. I am not saying to stop your meds and see but check the patient info sheet to see if it can affect your blood sugar or call your drs office and talk with a nurse to find out.
Avatar f tn Also on fertility medicine Femara and thyroid medicine, typing to get pregnant. I need some fruit to take Metformin. Just Metformin is making me more nauseous and discouraging. So I eat one date fruit with every Metformin i,e just after swallowing Metformin. Is this okay?. Also I eat grapes now whenever I feel like need more energy to move around. Is that good? I lost my apetite after started Metformin. So trying to be more on fruits.
Avatar n tn Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.
1888358 tn?1320969676 Hello, I'm new to this forum, but thought I'd ask a couple of questions. I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with Type 2 Diabetes (I'm 33), and I've never really been under good control. I have been prescribed Metformin, but it always makes me so sick (Low Blood Sugar feeling as well as diarrhea) so inevitably I stop taking it. My first question is, does anyone know how long it typically takes for these side effects to subside?
Avatar f tn I had diarrhea with metformin and even months after stopping metformin ibstill had diarrhea. My doctor switched me to januvia. Am so much better and sugar is controlled. Im not saying this is the solution. Im just sharing my experience with metformin. I agree with sally, see your doctor asap.
Avatar f tn I have been on Metformin for about 3 yrs. I still get sick to my stomach and very loose stools and painful gas. Somedays I get no side affects and other days its unreal. Thought I would get use to it. I am on it for serveral reasons. No AF, cystic acne and to top it off type 2 diabetes.Since taken it,no skipped periods and no big cyst on my face, That last one is a blessing in its self.
Avatar f tn in my case their was nothing wrong with my ovaries but I did have insulin resistance which caused me very bad acne, no period at all, alittle facial hair, and definitely darking folds around my neck and arms.My OB/GYN put me on metformin and birth control. A year later I've lost 61 pounds because of it..i feel amazing. It was slow in the beginning because of the side effects from the metformin ex. stomach bloat, gas, diarrhea, and ingestion.
1137951 tn?1261012397 I had a question...I resently have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and was put on Metfomin, 500mg 2 times a day. And so far I don't feel like it has helped me at all. The side effects that I got from Metformin have not gone away yet, I still have nausea, I'm never hungry, and to top it all off my BG levels are still very high even with my diet.
Avatar n tn My ObGyne stopped the metformin and put me on Duphaston. I had a scan and the featus measured 6 weeks and 3 days and we heard a heartbeat. He seemed surprised that I didn't have nausea by now. Should I be worried? Btw I have pcos.
1580703 tn?1651904887 I have chronic nausea and am worried I have parasites. I took some fiber and it helped and I did a parasite cleanse. This discussion is related to Chronic Nausea.

475740 tn?1208262865 t know if anything else, I take metformin 1000mgs a day, and at first it kept me with the runs and I lost 20lbs but, then after my body got use to the meds I gained it all back.. I am going to start a liquid diet.. if that doesn't help then I am going to look into Weight Loss surgery.. I am close to 250lbs my biggest is 255.. and I am 5'6 I think that my weight has alot to do with all my health problems and not being able to get PG.. so I need to lose weight some how..
Avatar f tn I've been taking Metformin 2000mg XR for 3 months and am just now getting side effects like metallic taste and gastro side effects. Same pharmacy, same Sando manufacturer. Is it normal to have side effects after a few months? I never had any side effects initially.
Avatar n tn m on metformin and i started to ovulate again on it. It makes me feel very sick, nausea and yes my breast hurt too. Mine are fuller also so I think it can be something to do with that. Also if they give you progesterone that will do that too. I started on metform on 9/11/08 and finally ovulated for the first time in over a year on 10/31/08 even had a normal cycle last month. I really like that medication.
645800 tn?1466860955 Yes, one nasty side effect of Metformin is nausea. He should have been aware of this from reading the pharmaceutical paperwork that accompanied the Metformin bottle, or by his Pharmacist. Keep in mind, not everyone can tolerate the same medications. What he needs to do is notify his doctor asap as there are other oral diabetes medications that can be Rx'd.

1959497 tn?1325174764 I have noticed that after I take my metformin I go to the restroom with yellow, frothy stools and slightly nauseated. I have tried taking the metformin before eating and after with the same effects.
Avatar f tn The only side affects I had for about the first 3 weeks were nausea, upset stomach and some loose stooles. Other then that, that was about it. In my case, I don't have any cysts but some of my labs were a bit abnormal, so having pcos varies from woman to woman.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with type two diabetes about 18 months ago and feel I can easily accept the changes to diet that I need to adopt. I am controlled with metformin and that is where the problems came in. The good news about metformin is that you cannot hypo so it is fairly risk free. The bad news is what it does to your digestion. I could tolerate the cheap stuff at all, suffering appalling stomach cramps and enough wind to run a small power station.
Avatar n tn I stopped metformin abruptly and started birth control around the same week I stopped the metformin, and so suddenly and intensely felt so much pain like I was dying. Its been 3 months and I haven't gotten better, I used to be so happy and hopefull now I feel completely hopeless, uneasy, and cannot enjoy anything. Will I ever get better??!!
Avatar f tn I have been taking metformin since 9/11/08 and I have these side effects: Diarrhea; gas; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach upset; temporary metallic taste; vomiting. Some people only get the side effects for a few weeks. I still have it but It's worth it since I ovulate now. Check with your doctor if any of these most common side effects persist or become bothersome: Diarrhea; gas; headache; indigestion; nausea; stomach upset; temporary metallic taste; vomiting.
Avatar f tn I am eating healthy and trying to do everything right. I take Metformin 500mg 2x a day and will start 1000mg 2x a day in a couple more days. I also have RA, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and Hyperplasia. Could you explain why this is happening or what I can do about it? I do not have insurance and am being told now with my medical issues I can't get insured.

Avatar f tn The doctors just kept telling me to lose a few pounds and that before I knew it I would be pregnant. Well anyway my doctor prescribed Metformin and I have been doing my own research on it to see if it is worth the risks and I prefer to get feedback from people who are actually taking it and who are in my same position. Who would recommend that I take it and why? What are your success stories? Is there anything I need to know that my doctor isn't telling me?
