Common Questions and Answers about Metformin and liver function tests

Avatar f tn The ALT/AST labs are part of a liver panel to detect liver disease or damage. There is a connection between elevated liver function tests and Type 2 diabetes. Additionally, mild chronic elevation of transaminases can be related to an underlying insulin resistance. The ALT can also be increased after a strenuous exercise, or an injection of medication into the muscle. This increase would be temporary. I would recommend that you continue to monitor your lab results.
Avatar m tn ALT and AST and GGT are normal. Bilirubin is high and it could be caused by a number of things. A positive antibody test doesn't mean you have HCV. The presence of HCV should be confirmed by HCV RNA PCR.
Avatar n tn My alt is 88, my ast 40, I drink a minimum of 8 beers daily, but my direct billiruben is only .01 and total billiruben is only .07. Does this mean my liver function tests are okay.
Avatar f tn My doctor did a liver panel among many, many other tests because this was my yearly physical and because my insurance is running out soon so we're trying to eliminate as many possibilities as we can. I'm being tested again next week, along with my kidney function, which was also slightly elevated.
Avatar n tn I stopped metformin abruptly and started birth control around the same week I stopped the metformin, and so suddenly and intensely felt so much pain like I was dying. Its been 3 months and I haven't gotten better, I used to be so happy and hopefull now I feel completely hopeless, uneasy, and cannot enjoy anything. Will I ever get better??!!
Avatar f tn subutex and liver function tests. do you need this. i have read it on several sites and research i have done.
Avatar f tn I have a gastroenterologist now due to the abnormal liver tests, positive SMA, and Alpha-1, and he agrees with my primary doctor I should restart the Lipitor and just monitor my liver with frequent blood tests. My rheumatologist, however, tells me he does not think it is wise to restart the Lipitor with all my unspecified autoimmune issues and autoantibodies. I would appreciate your view on this.
Avatar f tn he said to wait a month and have the liver tests done again. Using you as a second opinion, is that good advise or should I go to a special Doctor that deals with this kind of thing?
253566 tn?1219679699 He has prescribed Metformin for Fatty Liver NOT for diabetes. Doing a google it seems that there is no meds for fatty liver and Metformin is for diabetes. He has me prescribed 500mg 2X/day. I am upset that he didnt run another Glucose test or any other for diabetes. Seems the worse side effects of Metformin is gastrointestinal upset & I already have really bad GERD but have success with generic prilosec. I would hate to create a worse condition with my GERD...
1032715 tn?1315984234 Keep drinking and using and it will eventually give up. I had high readings and was hospitalised for liver damage but it eventually recovered after I stopped drinking. Worrying about it is a futile act, stick to your recovery plan, don’t drink or use and when the time comes have the necessary tests then deal with things as your doctor recommends.
Avatar m tn It is not unreasonable to take two 1000 mg Metformin tablets a day, provided you get regular liver function testing. Or three 500 mg tablets. But you should not do so blindly. And you can't count on "feeling" to sense your glucose levels. Intense blood glucose testing is the only way to get a handle on whether or not your medications are being properly used. Many diabetic clinics have a download feature where you come in and they download information from your meter.
Avatar f tn Infection and inflammation readings on liver function tests were normal but other ?readings (Consultant said)a little abnormal. Could this be due to prolonged antibiotics?Chest xray and ct abdo, chest and pelvis all clear 2 months ago. I still have pain in the left side of chest where pleurisy and pleural effusion has been and i still have bubbles when i breathe. Has anyone got any advice? I have just been to have accupuncture for pain relief which was BRILLIANT!
Avatar m tn 88 (norm of 0-40) and ALT: 58 (0-55). He indicated that because of the numbers were "abnormal" protocal was to follow up for Hep B and C among other tests. Each of the other areas of the LFT were returned normal. My hep B and C tests were returned negative, to which he indicated would rule out hepatitis.
Avatar f tn The tests said there are some abnormalities within my liver tests. I am going again tomorrow for Gamma GT and hepatic profile tests. Could this mean that I may have secondary cancer in my liver?
Avatar f tn I had an aunt who died from liver cancer and her liver function tests were normal until the end stages. However, it is common to have cysts in the liver and fatty areas that aren't a problem. When I was dx they found a hemangioma in my liver and another cyst and there were two cysts in my kidneys. Before my surgery, I thought this must indicate cancer had spread there only to find out that most of us do have some sort of cyst congenitally or as we age. My dr.
Avatar n tn hbv vaccine are safe and you better have both hepatitis A and B, your condition is very serious because unhealthy food did not damage only your glucose levels but all your organs even if blood tests cannot show yet.
Avatar n tn When i went in to see her she avised me that my liver function test results were high (166), she also said that my white blood cell count was high! I'm just a bit worried that something may be wrong, the tests were arranged as i have little red spots appearing all over my body, almost like little spider veins, i now have to wait to have the tests done again, does anyone know what this may mean?
Avatar m tn when i made my LFT and had flu and i take 9 paracetamol pills in one week, may this effect in LFT test? I made liver echoscopy and i have increased echogenicity of the liver too. Is my tests results danger? Is my alt and ggt results very increased?
Avatar n tn ok thank you,my liver tests were returning back to normal when i cut out sugars and fats and exercising in your opinion would you say that this points to fatty liver disease i do not drink or smoke, sorry to keep asking and thank you for taking the time to answere me,Jordan.
Avatar m tn It is best that you discuss the results with your attending physician for proper evaluation. Your medical history, symptoms and results of other tests are important considerations also. Take care and do keep us posted.
