He was told he has pre-diabetes and given a prescription for metformin 500 mg to take once a day for a week and to increase by a pill a day/week until he would be taking 4 pills/day within a month. Everything I have read says that this is given for high blood sugar. He is also very underweight. I am very confused as to the purpose of this medication.
Metformin and properly dosed insulin should be sufficient, though you may need more than 20 units of lantus.
You should also be using a basal-bolus dosing regime. Basal is long acting insulin (such as lantus) and bolus is short acting insulin fro when you eat (such as humalog).
You need to learn about diabetes manageme3nt and become responsibile for your own management.
I have been on Metformin, Januvia and Glimeperide for a few years. They are not controlling my diabetes. She wanted me to try Victoza and give up the Januvia. I got over fear of giving myself the shot, but on the 3rd day I began to get sick. On the 4th and 5th days I couldn't even go to work. Changed shot to before bed instead of morning and it made no difference. After a little over a week I stopped it. Lost 5 lbs cause I couldn't eat anything.
Hi Driven, you need to go through them and see for your self about the side effects, but there a lot of drugs out that cause ED as side effects, if yoiu dont now have your drug data sheets anymore just google them.
I take metformin 500mg twice a day & Januvia 100mg at bedtime. I was diagnosed type 2, about month & half ago. I take multivitiamins during day. At bedtime I take the min amount of magnesium & potassium (for night leg cramps) & aloe vera in a half glass of protien shake. For days now, I have had diarrehia. My morning fastings numbers are 95-110, now, for days, but now my day numbers have jumped to 135-138, just today, after having diarrehia for a few days.
I am Type ll diabetic taking metformin & Januvia. My levels are climbing and the Dr. is considering insulin for me. I do not want to be insulin dependent. Trying to lower with diet changes but have other health issues that restrict what I can eat. I have high cholesterol (can't take any statin drugs to lower), diverticulosis,irritable bowel, fibromyalgia and now a mouth full of braces so am unable to eat many things because my teeth do not hit together to chew.
I do not eat before exercise at five thirty every day. I am taking metformin glimperide januvia and atenolol for my high blood pressure. Before i exercise blood sugars are 156. After exercise they go to 226. Why? I take my meds about fifteen minutes before my exercise routine. Blood sugars continusously drop as the day goes on. before dinner time they can be 100. after eating they drop to 60 sometimes.
Personally I take atenolol 100mg daily, losartan 25mg, and HCTZ 12.5mg , plus escitalopram 5mg daily, clonazepam, 0.5mg twice daily, metformin 1000mg am. ,januvia. 100mg am. crestor 10mg and metformin 500mg at night., I've been diagnosed with LVH (mild ) since 2001 and I have never once suffered from ED from these Meds and I'm going on 49 years old, i'm doing well BP average around 117/76 pulse 70, and Glucose around 115 daily.
Immediately she prescribed Metformin and Januvia. Her body did not react well on Metformin and we switched to Glupizide 5mg once a day in the morning. She continues to have out of control sugar. Like for example yesterday in the morning it was 320, and after a pill it went down to 260. A week ago when her sugar was out of control, I took her to ER where she was put on IV and was given some insulin. Her condition improved immediately, but deteriorated again 5 hours later.
When I first started on metformin which was 9 years ago, my fasting and post luch were under 105 and 150. My A1C used to be 5.5. Over the yrs it has steadily risen, There is some information on the web, that it is better to tightly control sugars, there are even some who say that it would make sense to go on insulin to get fasting sugars at 105, and post prandials under 140. But my doctor is not in that school, he is happy for readings under 7.00.
i m asking as haw the use of sitaglipin help in conlrolling the sugar levels.
I am maintaining a stage 3 and was on a 3 month regiment of vitamin d and we also eliminated metformin. I take Amaryl now, instead.. My blood glucose was out of control but my PCP put me on Victoza. That seems to be helping with the exception of BS levels being very low in the morning. My PCP has suggested she might take me off the Amaryl and just have me take more insulin along with the Victoza and Januvia. At this point we're experimenting with the meds to see what works better.
The levothyroxine has a long half-life within the blood and may also be withheld for 3 to 4 days without significant changes observed. The Januvia and blood pressure meds you shouldn’t mess around with, so the experiment may not be performed completely. .
While you may think the diet has nothing to do with it, but I think investigating would be better than pure recall. You could try to make a log of things she eats and again try to make changes there depending on which foods seem suspect.
We have decrmy Lantus to 10eased units in the even. and 1/2 Amaryl in the a.m. and p.m. I also take Januvia 100mg, and 2000 mg Metformin a day. My A1c has been 6.6 for a few years now, but have moved and have a new Dr. who wanted me to try the Victoza. My BS are running 154 (No lower) to as high as 272. OCCASIONALLY I might have a reading as high as 272 (My B'day celebration had to many sweets) :(. but not this high On a regular basis.
While in the hospital for heart related problems my doctors found that I had the D word. I refuse to accept this as I have worked so hard to avoid having the D word. I was sent home with a monitor which I refuse to use (no fear of needles just using the monitor means acceptance). I am on Januvia 50 mg and Amaryl 1mg. My doctor told me to eat 3 meals a day plus a snack at bed time. I have lived by the Atkins diet and don't eat carbs and don't care for sweets.
I started Victoza about a month ago. Started out at the lowest dose and am now at 1.8. My dr. put me on it because my a1c was 9.9 with taking Januvia, Lantus and glimipiride. I started experiencing low bs in he morning so decided to drop the second glimipiride. My numbers are great now. I had to stop metformin because I also have ckd. I am having problems with sour stomach and gas. Sometimes not too bad and other times, terrible. Hoping this will all subside after my system gets adjusted.
