If the symptoms are severe then it will be best to consult a dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn Hello, Hirsutism is usually caused by hormonal imbalance and in women PCOS is one of the leading causes of hirsutism and infertility. The methods of hair removal in hirsutism are shaving, chemical depilation by using depilatory creams, temporary epilation by plucking, tweezing, waxing and permanent epilation by electrolysis, thermolysis and laser hair removal. Apart from these there are some medicines available for treating hirsutism in PCOS.
Avatar f tn Decreasing these androgens will decrease the ovarian cysts, acne, and hirsutism. Metformin will decrease blood sugar as well. I have also just undergone surgery to remove cysts and had an ovarian drill to, as my doctor said, give my ovary a fresh start. I find out Monday if I will be put on birth control as well. Each person is different. My sister also has PCOS, but her case is mild compared to mine. At first, she was on a lower dose of metformin, but she now takes only a birth control.

Avatar f tn Metformin and some type of birth control pill are normally the treatments of pcos. I've had pcos since (and maybe longer) 2007 and have been on metformin 500mg 2x since Jan of this year, plus I'm on Yasmin bc pills. Yasmin, like luisa24 said is the best form of bc pills for pcos. It also helps great if you suffer from mild acne breakouts. To answer your question about the side affects after you stopped treatment, well that i cannot answer.
Avatar n tn yes, i have also PCOS and im thin. im taking metformin now and for the last 3 months i had yasmin to help regulate also my cycle. my problem now is that i easily get hungry. my stomach always craves for food. is this really the effects of metformin?
Avatar f tn First of all insulin resistance has to be checked and corrected by a dose of metformin. Then regular check ups have to be scheduled and you put on low dose birth control pills to regularize the cycles first. Once this is corrected, regular ultrasounds will be done to assess the status of the ovum and accordingly drugs prescribed. At times laparoscopy is done and cysts punctured. Diet and weight control are also important part of therapy and you need to be under a good nutrition expert.
Avatar f tn Hi there, I'm 26 and I have been diagnosed with PCOS 3 years ago. I can't get much out of my doctor, so I wanted to ask you to tell me your experiences with this syndrome -- What are your insulin levels for instace? Mine was 3 times higher than normal when I checked it 2 years ago! How many of you have already developed diabetes? Does everyone with PCOS develop diabetes and, if so, when? At what age? I'm taking Metformin, Spironolactone and Yasmin everyday.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with pcos 6 years ago , I had all the typical symptoms ,I took metformin to lose weight and it did not work for me so I quit taking it , I started losing weight by my own and it was very very hard I was 180 pounds and lost 30 pounds in two year time , I went to do the usual tests and the doctor told me you r healthy and you don't have pcos , I'm very satisfied but the hair is growing more and more , and I can't control it , I have it in my face ,chest ,abdomen , but t
Avatar f tn I have a micro prolactinoma that has "returned" after 14 years, bringing with it diabetes. I had a child a year ago and that is when I began to have the eczema & allergies. Right now I am trying to wean my son (morning and bedtime comfort 'feedings"). I have a history of hirsutism, inflamed stomach (unknown cause), inflamed joints, weakness, forgetfulness, and feeling tired. My adrenal glands were tested and it turns out they work fine although I have low cortisol levels.
Avatar m tn I also suffer from central obesity, have striae in abdominal area, hirsutism and slightly increased testosterone and low transferrin. The low transferrin worries me because I remember being 10 years old and having a depression on my thumb nail. I had no idea what is was and I now think it could of been koilonychia. I am also always cold and I went to donate blood at 23 yr. old, and a needle stick to test for iron was given to me. I was told I had low Fe and could not give blood at that time.
Avatar f tn Hello, These facial hair are due to hirsutism. Hirsutism is usually caused by hormonal imbalance and in women PCOS is one of the leading causes of hirsutism. The methods of hair removal in hirsutism are shaving, chemical depilation by using depilatory creams, temporary epilation by plucking, tweezing, waxing and permanent epilation by electrolysis, thermolysis and laser hair removal.
Avatar f tn I wanted to ask all of you about your experience with hirsutism. I'm fair skinned and have a mild case - a smattering of dark hairs on my chin and upper lip, but tons--and I mean TONS of hair everywhere on my body, but it's not coarse and dark, it's more the soft, vellus kind. And it's not that real short, hardly noticeable peach fuzz everyone has. It's long, like several millimeters, and very noticeable.
Avatar f tn Excess hair in females is usually due to excess of male hormones called androgens and this is called hirsutism. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of hirsutism. Since you have this you must consult a gynecologist to follow this up. Adrenal gland problems like adrenal tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome also result in excess hair but may have been ruled out in your case as you have a normal DHEA.
Avatar n tn Dhea-s (or perhaps Testosterone alone would suffice.) P.C.O.S. can cause hirsutism (and a number of women who suffer hypothyroidism, also have PCOS). As can adrenal problems. I would ask your doctor to take a look into your hormones (Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone...), if only to put your mind at ease. If he/she is unwilling to...you CAN do this on your own: http://www.healthcheckusa.com/lab_tests/The_Roby_Institute/The_Roby_Institute_Female_Series_option_A Best!
Avatar n tn But if there are excess body hair then hirsutism needs to be ruled out. Although hirsutism in not regularly found in males but it is not always so. Adrenal tumors and dysfunction are the commonest causes of hirsutism in males. Adrenocortical tumors are almost always malignant in patients who present with hirsutism. The other common cause is of Cushing’s syndrome. I suggest you to consult an endocrinologist in that case.
Avatar f tn but you and I both know it not happening....I started on Metformin for 12 mths...then Clomid and Metformin combined for 12 mths....Long time!! Finally started IVF over a year ago.....First time in I developed Hyper Stimulated Syndrome (because of the PCO)...They couldn't perform a ET due to the dangers to my health.....however they did retrieve 27 Eggs......however only 6 fertisilised and only 5 froze. 20890199 tn?1573389176 If you have slightly higher male hormones, this would be detected and is a sign of PCOS. The hirsutism is because of that when related to PCOS and other symptoms could be acne or thinning hair. Another very telling diagnostic test is a vaginal ultrasound actually looking to see if you have cysts on the ovaries. This article talks about all of this for you to review https://www.webmd.com/women/do-i-have-pcos#1 Are you able to schedule an appointment with a gynecologist?
Avatar n tn I would also feel more beautiful and confident. So my doctor gave a prescription for Vaniqa 13.9%, Metformin 850 mg, and Spironolactone 25 mg. I have an appointment in 3 weeks to see him again for more blood work so he can determine if the drugs are of any benefit. My main concern with the two latter drugs is that they are used in patients who have been diagnosed for PCOS. Is that correct? Why would my doctor prescribe those if I only have higher levels of testosterone?
Avatar f tn ve heard saw palmetto and licorice helps, but I wanted to know what you ladies use personally and what works best. I have hirsutism, terrible acne and I am overweight. I also believe I am prediabetic, as my grandmother on my father's side had diabetes and my mother, so it runs in both sides of the family. (I also believe my grandmother had pcos and my father has the male version if there is one. I thought I read that somewhere.
363243 tn?1331033850 ve had symptoms of it since I was 12 (hirsutism) and I am now 36. My hirsutism was diagnosed as idiopathic because the testing I had did not indicate an elevated testosterone level. I don't know if the testing is more sophisticated now but I had new testing done and it did indicate that my free weak testosterone was elevated. Anyway, I have a few hairs under my chin, a lot on my neck, chest, stomach, and inner thighs. I know...it's not attractive and very depressing.
