Avatar n tn He googled B12 vs Metformin on his laptop while I was in his office and his face lit up. B12 is vital for nerve health. No B12 and the nerve sheath begins to break down resulting is all sorts of issues. I was guided to the Metformin-B12 issue from a FaceBook post, or was it an ad? Googled it and all sorts of things popped up.
1660049 tn?1326089018 There is a mention that metformin can cause Vit B12 deficiency. Also if you take an estrogen supplement it can increase your risk for hypoglycemia. There is a long list of herbs that interact with metformin, however, so choose a prenatal vitamin that does not have herbs. I would type it out but it is a pretty long list LOL.
Avatar m tn Low stomach acid reduces absorption of nutrients such as iron, B12, folate, calcium and zinc; affects digestion of protein, carbohydrates and fat; and increases the risk of bacterial overgrowth and fungal infections. I posted a lot of info on another thread about reflux and treatment options: http://www.medhelp.

482726 tn?1212807135 Can someone tell me about b12 defiency and the correlation to Demeyelination Disorder... I was praying asking for clearification about my illness (since undx'd), I remembered that I hadn't been to take my b12 shot this month. I've been diabetic for over 12yrs. and taking Metformin 2k or 3k mg per day for about 5-7 yrs, before I got on insulin. The thing about the Metformin, is that in may case in such high doses for all those years, my body can't absorb b12, so my Endo.
366262 tn?1360031596 Well I went to the doctor about a month ago and they ran some tests and told me that my b12 was really low, and now i have to get injections once a month, does anyone know if low b12 can cause infertility?
Avatar f tn Test for vitamin B12 deficiency. To add, diabetes drug metformin is a known cause of vitamin B12 deficiency. Optimal B12 serum is above 800pg/mL or 600pmol/L. If your B12 levels are under this, then sublingual B12 is highly recommended.
4433579 tn?1354551748 My husband and I have been ttc for over a year, but in 2010 I got my left tube removed because of a softball size cyst. I am now on metformin and take B12 vitamins, are my chance nil on getting pregnant? I don't have periods unless I take provera for ten days...
Avatar f tn m on Metformin for PCOS so I emailed Life Extension, the company where I buy my vitamins and asked them if it was okay to take both. I haven't heard back yet though.
Avatar m tn My wife has suffered from depression for several years now and has been on so many different medications that I believe have caused more health issues. Her doctor had her taking Geodon to help her sleep along with Zoloft for depression. She started to gain weight and became even more reclusive so we found a specialist out of town to check her Thyroid.
605648 tn?1249571427 After my 4th mc, I switched doctors, stayed on that combo and added progesterone 3 dpo and got a positive. I stayed on the metformin and progesterone thru 12 weeks and the others thru term - and my DD is now almost 14 months. If you are positive for MTHFR you should ask to have your homocysteine levels checked -that is the hormone effected by the gene and can lead to cardiovascular issues. Mine was fine but we added the baby aspirin and folic acid as a precaution.
Avatar f tn I am wondering if there is a protocol for diagnosing the cause when someone has low B12. Ive had problems with tingling, numbness etc and my doctor decided to test my blood. It came back with low B12, 130. I have had B12 injections, quite a lot to begin with now every 3 month. Just before I was due my last injection my level was taken and was 200. They say antibodies they check for intrinsic factor are negative so no pernicious anaemia. Is the testing accurate once B12 inj has been started?
Avatar n tn You want i tot be around the middle of its range. You also need to start supplementing B12 and ferritin. B12 should be in the upper part of its range, and ferritin should be 70-80, for women.
Avatar m tn I feel tired all the time even though I have regular B12 injections and can not walk far without needing to rest and sit down. Also I go from constipation to having runs regularly. Constant indigestion and itchy skin on my back and legs now all round my mouth is red and sore. I have had quite a few dizzy spells (more feeling funny) with a headache after them. My appetite is poor but I have not lost weight although prior to diagnosis I lost loads. doctor said as my blood count was not bad 7.
714128 tn?1249136386 I decided to get a blood glucose meter saturday and all day saturday my levels were between 82-95. Sunday I started the metformin back and I have been watching my blood glucose since then and it has been lower 59-80. The strange thing is that the level 59 was about 2 hours after a meal which is also when I took the metformin. It was 80 after waking up in the morning before breakfast.
Avatar m tn However, Diabetic patients taking metformin are prone to have B12 deficiency. So B12 Supplementation helps in fatique.
1843973 tn?1326131704 I have tried prenatals and metformin for 6+ months but gave up on those. I had 2 miscarriages in 2008. The first one I was 5 months and the second I was 3 months. Both times I was pregnant with twins. I am almost at the breaking point with trying. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn Also the diabetes drug metformin is known to cause low vitamin B12 levels. Low levels of B12 also cause memory loss, fatigue and many other health problems.
583580 tn?1231136383 m gonna get it, its just all in when. He put me on Metformin and Byetta. Within 3 months of being on those meds my triglycerides jump to well over 200 (they were low in the normal range before the meds). I stopped the metformin on my own cause I had a thought it could be that doing it. As soon as I dropped it I had another blood test within a couple of month of stopping it and my triglycerides came back down again.
Avatar f tn t go below 2 and Metformin can decrease Vitamin B12 and Folate when used long term (a study showed that after using Metformin for 4 years, 7% had decreased levels of Vit B12.. So if Hep C lowers Vitamin B.....and treatment lowers Vitamin B...and the Metformin you're taking lowers Vitamin B, and higher levels are associated with treatment success, then it makes sense to supplement it.
Avatar m tn Thanks for answering, Just to clarify, I take high sugar foods OR I take metformin. Not both at the same time. I think metformin mostly helps with insulin resistance (and it doesnt lower the sugars since they are already normal). My sugars are OK even when I am not taking metformin. They get high from 5.5 to 8 when I eat, but they drop back to 6 or 5, 2 hours after eating. The sugar levels during the shaking and weakness episodes are 4.5 to 5.
Avatar n tn In a healthy normal person they get B12 from their diet and then this special area of your intestines make something called "intrinsic factor" that makes the B12 work. You might be lacking that intrinsic factor (or have probs with that part of your intestine where it is made). Unfortunately the only way that you can get the activated form of B12 is from shots, so it sounds like you will need to make sure that you get them regularly now.
Avatar f tn My doctor agreed to increase to 1 grain as another trial, wants me to get B12 shots, take a supplement called thyrocsin, and start Vit D supplements. Ferritin is low/normal but she says that can wait for now. I feel like I am a mess despite living well - what the heck is going on? My FSH was a shock, I thought I was peri for at least 2 yrs. Thanks for reading and any advice on anything, I really appreciate the support so far!
Avatar f tn The only abnormalities that came back was a 200pg/ml in B12, SED of 2 mm/hr, and my B6 was in a toxic range. In May of 2009, I was concerned about my weight(~200lbs) so the PA I saw prescribed me with Phentermine(15mg) and Metformin(500mg). They made me jittery, so I stopped after one month. I do not take a multivitamin and I do eat healthy. How am I supposed to cut out B6? I have been taking 2000ug B12 for 5weeks. Every doc I talk to says I probably have MS.
