That said, the only way to be 100% certain is to visit a doctor or clinic promptly (within a couple days) the next time you have an oral herpes outbreak, so it can be tested for the virus. The preferred test is a DNA test, such as PCR, although culture is acceptable if it's the only test available to the doctor or clinic.

Hi, I read that Valtrex prevents herpes replication. Would this medicine have any use in preventing possible infection of the ganglion? For instance, lets say you take Valtrex before or right after a sexual encounter or possible exposure. Would the medicine stop the replication of the virus inside your skin/body and prevent it from taking up a permanent home inside the ganglion?
For the past 2 days I have had tingling in the area right around the left side of my upper lip I’m concerned because I think I’ve contracted oral herpes (She did not have a visual outbreak of herpes, as far as I could tell) . If this is herpes and my lip is tingling as a result of it, would a cold sore / fever blister always develop next?

About a week ago..I noticed some small blisters on my lip.....I popped them and now it has been a cold sore. I went to the doctor to get std/hiv test....Fortunately no call from the doctor..so i'm hoping nothing serious. I've been tested positive for Hsv1....which I was told wasn't a std and very common in young men. I've never had a breakout till now.
Why now? ..why am I having a outbreak. Doctor put me on Alvycor...herpes medicine....

If yes, and you seem to be implying that you didn't receivei oral sex from this partner, there could be a couple of explanations for this:
1) HSV 1 can certainly be transmitted via intercourse. It just doesn't happen as often, but it certainly happens.

If you had a blood test, you should have a test result that reads something like "HSV1 IgG 4.2". Your number will be different - that's just an example.

With all that said, I have had one open sore that itches and bleeds all the time even on anti viral medicine . From everything I’ve read it should lessen with medicine and sloth off - this thing is going nowhere not healing or closing and just the left side of my anus itches always. if over 50% of the USA population has oral herpes (even w/o symptoms),and many people perform oral sex regularly, then wouldn't most people in the USA have genital herpes? What are the chances of getting genital hsv1 thru oral sex (w/ no coldsores) if I was negative for oral hsv1 and genital hsv1 before the incident? And what if I was positive for oral hsv1 before the incident?

The question -- should I go for an HIV test or is the risk too low to justify it? Rationale for asking is that on National Library of Medicine website oral herpes is listed as symptom of acute HIV infection + what happened at dentist earlier. It is about 8 weeks now since the dental hygienist visit.
