1965148 tn?1354978634 As others here have commented, a real psychotic episode, which is a very serious event, must occur in order for their to be a true 'bipolar I' diagnosis. The diagnostic 'bar' for labling someone as 'manic depressive' must be high, because of the risks of the medications that are needed to control this illness, among other factors.
Avatar n tn He was diagnosed with Major Depression with psychotic features. He has been on 20mg of Zyprexa, 100mg of Wellbutrin, 60 mg of Prozac for three years. Is this a normal course of treatment?
Avatar n tn When I was younger before my diagnosis I had similar psychotic features and I was treated for major depression with psychotic features. I was treated with anti depressants and anti pyschotics. Unfortunately the anti d's triggered rapid cycling and lithium was then added to the mix. If it helps I no longer hear voices, it stopped around age 20. Now during an episode I have classic bipolar features.
915369 tn?1355314810 With severe depression you can have psychotic features. Also, with bpd, when you get extremely stressed you may experience transient psychotic stuff too. This is short-lived and you should be OK at reality testing (which makes it different from other psychotic disorders). You could try looking the diagnoses up in the dsm-iv. That may help you better understand what the disorder is comprised of.
Avatar n tn The dellusion can not be cured but the occurence sure as heck can! I am Bi Polar with psychotic features and was experiencecing someithing very similar to what your son goes through but it was more a rage/angel and demons thing - SEROQUEL! Total life saver. I take it daily. The PDR and DSM IV doesn't recommend it but the FDA jsut approved it for longer use in the treatment of BiPolar Disorder for mania and depression.
3579868 tn?1348739509 With bipolar 1 you get full blown mania and major depression, with bipolar 2 you get hypomania and major depression. cyclothimia fluctuates between minor depression and hypomania. Bipolar nos is where they put you when you obviously show some symptoms of bipolar disorder but they do not know which classification to put you in. There is also schizoaffective disorder which can have some symptoms simmilar to bipolar disorder.
408795 tn?1324935675 Hi fret. Major Depression can be triggered by many drugs. Not just interferon. So it is not usual for drugs to cause mood disorders. Here are some others... Alcohol Anticonvulsants Barbiturates Beta-adrenergic blockers Bromocriptine (Parlodel) Calcium-channel blockers Antabuse Estrogens Fluoroquinolone antibiotics Statins Interferon alfa Accutane Narcotics Norplant I wonder if "Interferon-Alpha Induced Mood Disorder" is in the DSM-IV?
Avatar f tn Does not occur exclusively during the course of schizophrenia, a bipolar disorder or a depressive disorder with psychotic features, or another psychotic disorder and is not attributable to the physiological effects of another medical condition.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with Depression with psychotic features, not any Bipolar disorder Anyway I was on Prozac with Wellbutrin, then had a relapse and they took me off both and started me on Abilfy only. Is this a normal procedure or should I also be on some low dose antidepressant in your opinion ? Thank you very much for your time.
539694 tn?1434565947 i hallucinate and im often aware of it and i know ive been pretty paranoid and delusional for much of my life. Thing is at their extremes those are psychotic symptoms.. i dont feel psychotic im not a bad or nasty person :-( You say theres been times you felt like people could read your thoughts? I get that but i only noticed and really realised the last few years, its just so subconscious you know?
1256303 tn?1291752568 My second question is how do I (and of course, my psychiatrist) differentiate between whether I am bipolar with psychotic features or schizo-affective? I definitely have the cycles of mania and depression, starting about three years ago, would have auditory and visual hallucinations when severely depressed. Recently with this batch of mania, I have begun to have the auditory hallucinations too, as well as visual. I also am having some problems with disorganized thoughts and speech and delusions.
Avatar m tn I was up and down for a while after the birth of my fourth beautiful baby. Then one night I stayed awake all night and that was it, I plunged into a very severe depression. I could not hold down water, struggled with an antidepressant for one month also with zanax. It was not getting any better, really it was very severe and I became like a skeleton and very irrational.
Avatar f tn Yes I have bipolar 1 wih psychotic features severe mania. I was trying to read about it online but it was giving me other information. When I go to my doc I am taking a list of medications so we can find out what is best for me.
Avatar f tn Bipolar has no aspects of psychosis. With bipolar with psychotic features, during a period of moodswings (mania, depression) a person has auditory hallucinations (hears voices) or visual hallucations or has delusions (perceives things that are not in reality). With schizoaffective disorder, a person can have hallucinations or delusions even when the mood is euthymic (normal).
899491 tn?1243773627 Bipolar with psychotic features is not that rare. When a person has bipolar with psychotic features they have psychosis specifically during moodswings. When a person has schizoaffective as I do they experience psychosis all the time (as I did before my current recovery). The whole spectrum of bipolar to schizophrenia is linked up and they are just learning how.
Avatar m tn schizophrenoform disorder, r/o psychotic disorder NOS, r/o MDD chronic with psychotic features, r/o alcohol abuse, partner relation problem Axis 2: no diagnosis with paranoid traits Axis 3 deferred Several months after discharge diagnosis (not by doctor who gave second opinion) amended to Axsis 1: MDD, in remission, r/o depression due to general medical condition (vestibular injury), adjustment disorder with depression/anxiety, partner relation problems, alcohol abuse.
Avatar n tn And if you have suicidal urges you need to see a psychiatrist right away. Depression with psychotic features is when a person has psychotic thoughts only during mood fluctuations. With schizoaffective disorder psychotic thoughts or auditory hallucinations (hearing voices) can occur at any time. But as to how to look at it I'd say look at it as I do, I am a person with a psychiatric disability and I need treatment as part of my recovery.
Avatar f tn Double Depression is when you typically have long term depression (which is not as bad as major depression), then on top of this long term depression you have periods of major depression. That's what they call double depression.
Avatar f tn ve made a good recovery from schizoaffective which clinically is a step further than bipolar with psychotic features as in bipolar with psychotic features a person has delusions and hears voices during moodswings and in schizoaffective disorder its all the time. Even with current treatment the symptoms can be mitigated. He should have his psychiatrist follow up as to an exact diagnosis and when the onset of it was.
Avatar f tn Melancholic depression is honestly just the same as Major Uni-polar depression. Just a different twist on the name. The treatment options are the same as with Uni-polar depression. If I recall correctly, Melancholic depression is just like major Depression but a bit less cronic and severe. It's just an acronim that Psychiatrist use to target the actual severity of the condition. Just pretty much the same as Major depression.
1818882 tn?1317071318 It sounds like he possibly has severe depression. Some people with severe depression also have psychotic features (depression with psychotic features). It could be worth considering what happened a month ago to trigger this current state. I think encourage him to see a psychiatrist and perhaps look to follow that up with psychotherapy. You could ask him if he would like you to attend his appointment with him as a support person, etc.
603015 tn?1329862973 Hypomania is distinguished from mania by the absence of psychotic symptoms. In other words if there are psychotic features its mania. BP2's can get psychotic features in mania the same as anyone does. Is this what you are referring to on the Black Dog Site ?
Avatar m tn s not generally a part of depression but it can be from depression with psychotic features or other related conditions but only a psychiatrist would understand the specifics of it but ask them where the paranoia comes from. Recovery rates from antipsychotics vary but they will improve as new treatments become FDA approved (you can read through my posts for more information) so don't give up hope. But do discuss the whole issue with her psychiatrist.
