Common Questions and Answers about Macrobid vs cipro for uti

macrobid

493068 tn?1224765315 I have chronic bladder infections and on long term Macrobid and still get frequent UTIs. I have had 3+ bacteria for the last 2 months despite Cipro and Levaquin. This morning the UTI is back with burning, frequency. They did not do a C&S before Cipro I think because it is always e-coli. What could be wrong with these 2 meds not working?....I am so tired of this pain and burning. I also have had lower back pain and groin pain for the last 2 mos.
Avatar n tn I will continue the antibiotic (Macrobid) for as long as I can, just in case it is an infection. It does seem to be helping. Cipro is the only antibiotic I can tolerate for more than a few days but it hasn't worked for my last 2 UTIs. I will look for that IC questionaire if this problem continues.
Avatar f tn They put me on Macrobid, which seemed to help for a couple of days before the frequent urge to urinate returned. I went back to the doctor and they put me on Cipro 500MG 2x daily. Same thing: felt relief from my symptoms for 2-3 days, then felt a relapse. I have 2 days left on the Cipro. About halfway through my initial treatment of Macrobid, I felt a burning/itching that seemed consistent with a yeast infection, which I'd gotten before because of antibiotic use.
Avatar f tn I found out tuesday that i have a pretty horribly UTI after swearing i had a yeast infection. I was put on Macrobid 1 pill twice a day for 7 days. This is day is day 3 of the pills and i was wondering how long until it starts working? i am not in nearly as much pain as I was, but the pain with urination is still there slightly and get worse at night.
Avatar f tn I'm 52 and was prescribed macrobid for a UTI. Shortly after taking it I started having really severe heart palpitations. I have had them off and on since I was 29 and have been told it's probably due to my hypoglycemia. I'm very sensitive to certain medications and I looked this one up and it says it should not be prescribed to older people who have a debilitating condition. I am extremely anemic and may have internal bleeding in my intestinal area. My dr.
Avatar f tn Coli and entercoccus. I was put on Macrobid for 5 days didn’t help at all, was then switched to Cipro for 5 days. After 24hrs on Cipro all my symptoms went away. One week later my symptoms of a UTI retuned. Back to the doctors I went culture this time showed bacteria count less then 10,000. My doctor felt the infection was gone but I could be having bladder spasms. He give me spasm medication and referred me to a urologist. Fast forward another week still having UTI symptoms.
Avatar f tn and a week or so later i noticed pelvic pain. Made an appt and get tested for stds (12 days after unprotected sex). The doc found a uti and rx'd macrobid. Std tests came back negative. Macrobid didn't help and i developed burning with urination...doc gave me cipro. After cipro burning and pelvic pain was worse, so i went to the er. They found cervicitis and swabbed the pus for a std test and rx'd doxycycline for 2 weeks. Std test came back negative.
Avatar m tn I had UTI one and a hlf month back and was give cipro for 14 days....
Avatar f tn Ah, Macrobid. That's a really common one as well. I took it once for a UTI I had in September and it didn't work for me - so they had to prescribe something else.
Avatar m tn it’s annoying always have to pee and I can feel it get hot m.. on macrobid because they though uti but my urinalysis came back clean…… this stinks another other recommendations on how to get this fixed..
Avatar m tn Hello - Feb 16 - woke up with burning sensation inside penis, prescribed 7 day macrobid for suspected UTI, week later urine and urine culture came back normal. Put on 10 day Cipro suspected prostatitis, PSA, DRE and Trans Rectal Ultrasound all normal. Went to ER a few days later with pain in the penile shaft and glans. Examined by ER doctor and put on 10 days cipro and 1 dose cefixime. Went back to doctor, put me on 21 days sulfatrim for suspected Epidimitis-ochitis and ordered US.
Avatar f tn Hi wondering if anyone can help me please. A month ago I started to have cramping pain in lower abdomen and frequent urination . My doctor put me on macrobid but that didn't help . Then put me on cipro which didn't help either . The pain would come and go with lower back pain as well and getting up to urinate and bladder pressure all the time . After that my urine culture came back positive with group b strep . I'm not pregnant . My doctor gave me 7 days of penicillin .
Avatar f tn Yea they put me on it for a while for a uti. I'm resistant to it, but other than that its totally safe for pregnant women.
Avatar f tn Came back negative but said i had a uti. Took macrobid and symptoms got worse...doc then gave me cipro. Synptoms got worse. Did a pelvic exam and found cervicitis. Tested me for stds again and came back negative. Since then i have been on 5 rounds of antibitoics and tested for chlamydia and gonorrhea 6 times...all negative. What are the chances that all of these are false negatives? 4 out of 6 tests i was on a round of antibiotics.
Avatar m tn Since then I had cramps in lower abdomen. I later found out that it was an UTI. I was given macrobid but it did not work. I was then given a long dosage of Cipro and I feel much better but the cramps are somewhat there. I believe I have pid. I tested negative for chlamydia and Gonnerrhea and all other stds.
Avatar n tn It started two months ago with UTI, family doc found blood in urine, gave me cipro, no help with burning in the urethra/muscle spasms, no urgency to urine, or up at night, just constant pain, tested again, no infection, so I have had 2 cystoscopes, 2nd Urologist found a tiny smooth stone the size of a pinhead and he couldn't grab it due to being so small and said it would pass within the week, he ordered CTScan, ultrasound, blood work, liver enzyme lab, microlab, and NOTHING, all negative.
551604 tn?1333983135 I took Bactrim for my UTI recently. The nurse said the anti-biotic wouldn't have any effects on the baby but if they UTI stayed around it would cause pre-term labor. I'm assuming the benefits out-weight the negatives. I don't think your doctor would have prescribed you something unsafe for your baby.
285848 tn?1219092313 So she went to her OB for her follow up and he prescribed her 7 day macrobid. Well within 24 hours of taking it she started to feel weird, her legs were hurting her really bad and it was getting hard to breath. She complained that it felt like someone was sitting on her chest and it hurt to take deep breathes. She ended up going to the ER because my dad said it kind of sounded like an allergic reaction. Well he turned out to be right.
666089 tn?1260520261 i know that he wouldnt give me something that would be harmful, and not treating it would be more harmful then taking medications .. i would just like to hear if anyone eles has taken this medication for a uti and if they had any side effects with it? i tryed to look for infromation on the net about it but there were to many mixed reviews on this... or is there any other safer drugs you've take for uti's?
Avatar f tn Again, urine sample was negative for bacteria, but extremely high for white blood cells. Doctor put me on a month of Cipro. Cipro seemed to work for the first day, as I felt much better the following day. A few days later, had sex with the boyfriend again and symptoms returned with a vengeance. The main symptom was again an intense burning/stinging in the urethra and vulva area. Doctor switched me to Suprax which did nothing.

Avatar f tn Ever since I have requested macrobid as the others still have failed to work. Now it appears as if macrobid no longer works. Also, for two years I have had blood in my urine (even when I don't have a UTI). I was also diagnosed (when this first recurrent infection occurred) with interstitial cystitis (sp?), but after seeing a new urologist last fall and undergoing a procedure to look inside my bladder, he told me I did not and took me off of Elmiron.
Avatar f tn I went to GP, he prescribed me a bunch of antibiotics (Cipro, Bactrim, Macrobid), none of them work. Fast forward, went to see my GYN, she did a urethral swab and urine culture. My right part of urethra feels tender per GYN. The swab for STD/STI were negative. However, my urine came back positive for E.Coli. So I was prescribed Cipro, but I had an allergic reaction to it. So now I am on Keflex 4x a day for 7 days. Today is 2nd day, I still feel the pain.
Avatar f tn m pregnant Is there anything I can do without meds ?for UTI and Sore Throat if not did anybody take MACROBID while pregnant ?
Avatar m tn Hello - I saw my GP about a month ago after experiencing burning after urination. He did a urine test suspecting UTI and put me on macrobid(antibiotic) while he waited for the results. A week passed and there was no relief. Went back to GP and he said the results of the urinalysis and urine culture were normal but I told him about that the pain had since intensified.
Avatar f tn ve taken to get rid of the UTI is sulfamexazole, cipro (which seems to work the best), and the macrobid. But still as soon as I am off the antibiotic (the cipro or sulfamexazole) the UTI returns within a day. I am sorry you're going through this as well. It's very frustrating to not feel well...ever...and to have no solution. I have another appointment on Monday for them to test for protein or something like that. So I guess we'll see.
