lyrica

1088430 tn?1259159773 m nervous about why weight gain is heavily mentioned. why does it cause weight gain? Is it b/c it increasesesire to eat more (which for me been opposite so far, I make myself eat), or does it somehow mess with our metabolism and change the way our bodies burn calories? No offense to anyone, but when people say it's made them gain like 10-20+ pounds I find it xtremely hard to believe it's ruly the Lyrica's fault. It sounds more like lack of discipline and healthy eating habits...
1345254 tn?1325918041 No clue on why there's weight gain involved. All I know is everyone who I encountered in the pain management forum said they gained weight. I had to buy new pants and shorts because of it. After about 6 weeks, I was gaining 5 lbs a month. My diet didn't change, nothing changed from my normal routine. Nor did anything change to bring my weight back down. All I did was stop taking it back in April and now I'm back with 5 lbs of where I have been for 20 years..
Avatar f tn A lot of people gain weight from Lyrica. Has anyone gained weight and then been able to lose it again? I've gained 15 lbs and I really want to get rid of this extra weight.
Avatar f tn Since you have chronic pain your likely not getting around physically as much as you were before which can lead to the weight gain. The weight gain can cause an increase in your pain because your bones are having to bear that load. Also some antidepressants can cause weight gain as a side effect. I'm unsure about lyrica. I too take neurontin as well as a narcotic pain med called Norco. I find that neurontin helps with my pain almost as much as the norco.
Avatar n tn I can't answer that authoratatively. I haven't used nor had patient used. However most of my patients have been greatly helped by botox injections.
634733 tn?1316625992 Gabapentin and Lyrica are anti-seizure medications (this class of drugs also reduces neuropathic pain) that effect the voltage gating of calcium channels in the nervous system. Just about all of the anti-seizure medications "can" (but not always do) cause weight gain. These drugs decrease certain neurotransmitters and increase neuronal GABA levels.
Avatar f tn had to stop taking it for other reasons but it seemed better in the weight gain area for me(although I believe weight gain is still listed as a side effect -- you'll have to check). It worked well for my nerve pain though :).
Avatar m tn / My question is, WHY does the Lyrica make you put on weight. Is it just your appetite increases? Please explain how it puts on weight as I don't CAN"T put on when I have worked so hard at losing. I still have 15kgs to lose and when I am pain free enough wil;l be walking and some weight training etc. Thank you in advance for you advise. Cheers from Oz.
Avatar f tn No that is how you should be feeling. Just be careful as it does cause weight gain. Follow a healthy diet and exercise and you will be fine. Also if may cause sleepness, so don't drive to much until you are comfortable with it.
1637739 tn?1371688706 That's one of the reasons I quit taking it... Well that and the fact that it wasn't helping me... Lyrica was the worst as far as weight gain goes... It actually did help with my pain quite a bit but my doctor took me off of it because he couldn't get my swelling under control while on it... That's how my luck runs though...lol...
1396846 tn?1332459510 I've experienced weight gain around the abdomen, but I'm not on Lyrica. This is weird for me - I'm a pear type and normally gain weight on the butt and hips. But this last couple of years it's all been around the stomach. Maybe our insulin levels are too high - I know that I have better luck losing weight if I stay off the carbs and try to eat lots of raw vegetables and fruit.
Avatar m tn Lyrica was recently approved for treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder in Europe. Thats why my doctor gave it to me. Xanax put me on a rollercoaster and 6mg wasn't cutting it anymore. It doesn't do anything at all. I feel more stable on 4 mg klonopin but i still have anxiety. I don't want to take Lyrica because of the weight gain. I am extremely self conscious and run 40 minutes a day to try and lose the weight i gained on effexor xr. worst drug ever by the way.
Avatar f tn Lyrica weight gain & why??
Avatar f tn t tell if I am having w/d from detoxing off of fentanyl or is it Lyrica. I know it causes major weight gain and I don't need that. I know a girl who has been on it for a year and has my same med. problems. Well she weighed 125lbs when she started and 15 months later she weighs 197lb and likes the Lyrica for her pain but is now having severe joint pain , etc from the weight gain. I already have a metabolic disorder and cannot gain weight. Its very, very hard for me to lose weight.
Avatar n tn I underwent gastric bypass surgery in dec... have lost 84lbs and remain on Lyrica without anymore weight gain. I had stopped the Lyrica also in Dec and restarted in March and have had no issues with regainning weight. If it works for your pain I would remain on it.
648910 tn?1290663083 i quit taking my gabapentin due to weight gain/water gain whatever. i just didn't like that type of weight gain. have wanted to call to ask for Lyrica but haven't yet. i can sure tell i'm not taking it due to the noticeable increase certain pains.
131817 tn?1209529311 The one thing you have to be careful about with Lyrica is weight gain. Recently I have been losing weight like crazy, so maybe putting some on wouldn't be a bad idea LOL. Good Luck and take care.
Avatar f tn Hello there, I read you are taking celebrex. Did you know that celebrex has been taken off many drug store shelves. It is not a safe drug. Are you sure it's the Lyrica that is causing your weight gain? If it's the Lyrica that is causing the weight gain, maybe you should stop taking it, but talk to your doctor first. Don't just stop taking Lyrica. Good luck to you.
Avatar f tn Yes, they both have a side effect of weight gain but I needed the weight tho. So it works for me. I was just thinking about all the hair I too am "sheding" like my cat!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't know hair-lose was one of the side effefts!!!!!!! I don't need that! :( Other than this hair lose, even the eyebrows are thinning!!!!!!!! I will question my dr.about that.
Avatar f tn for most the drug is safe enuf///i have a friend hooked on trams///loves her lyrica and took up to 12 a day//gained a ton of weight and it made her slack off..when she takes a bunch of lyrica her speech is slurred/and not so with the trams,..
5164523 tn?1366525959 A word of warning about Lyrica, it caused me to gain weight. Just thought I would pass on the info. Good luck!
959341 tn?1246884689 Whether a craving for sweets is a side-effect, I doubt the drug maker would admit it. But I did gain weight. And weight gain is my worst enemy. I have fought being over-weight most of the last 40 years. Neurontin works well for some people, so do anti-seizure medications. It is thought that msucle spasms and nerve pain are like having mini-muscle seizures. At least that is what I was told by a Neuro at UVA in Virginia. I now take Baclofen for muscle spasms at night before I go to bed.
Avatar f tn Yeah, you should be on at least 600mg of Gabapentin to be equivalent to the 100mg of Lyrica (approximately). Lyrica made me gain weight too. Have you tried Topamax? That one makes you lose weight. It's an anti-seizure med too. Just a thought.
874521 tn?1424116797 Lyrica works better than Neurontin, but scaredmom330 is right about the weight gain. I had the same problem and had to quit taking both. I packed on the pounds and wasn't happy because I had just spent hundreds of dollars at Weight Watchers to lose 25lbs only to watch that money go down the toilet. There are a couple other alternatives that are just as effective. One is Topamax, but you have to be at a high dose- at least 150-200mg. That is what I am at and what I take. It helps a lot.
Avatar f tn Lyrica was the last because of the weight gain and swelling. But the nerve pain and hypersensitivity was too much to bare! So I went back on it and trying to lose the weight!! I hope this information has helped!!
