1168718 tn?1464983535 Hi guys, I'm investigating Lyrica, and a switch over maybe, I'm almost at the max of Gabapentin, so am looking into other options. I have heard though that so many people GAIN lots of weight with Lyrica..... have you folks found that to be a problem?? My mother is 79 and was put on Lyrica..( not to sure why), but apparently gained 40 pounds in 7 weeks, and I for soure don't want that. Extra weight is also hard on us with MS........
1318483 tn?1318347182 I was on 2700mg gabapentin daily before we gave up and I am up to 200mg Lyrica 2x daily. So you can see the comparison there. I don't know if your new pain in your feet is a side effect. Sounds like a new symptom and as the rules state, over 24 hrs means you need to notify the dr.
Avatar f tn as far as I know, there is no generic version of Lyrica at this time... and Lyrica and Gabapentin are two completely different medications... if your doctor or pharmacist told you otherwise, they are incorrect. Gabapentin is generic for Neurontin, originally developed as an anti-epileptic, whereas Lyrica was developed specifically for treatment of neuropathic pain. They both work on the body's GABA receptors, but the mechanism of action is slightly different with each.
Avatar n tn Gabapentin and Lyrica are in the same class of anti-convulsants and have similar actions. However their side-effect profiles may differ somewhat. If you are finding that the side-effects with gabapentin are tolerable then it would probably be best to increase the dose under doctor's advice. There is a long way upwards that you may go with the dose before reaching the upper limit, as Jason80 points out.
Avatar f tn If given a choice without cost factors pros and cons of Gabapentin versus Lyrica for long standing neuopathy pain in my back, legs and feet from surgery over 10 years ago...Any advise appreciated..
Avatar f tn s the only thing to calm the tingling and and pulsating. I find that Lyrica has a lot of side effects so I take gabapentin as my morning dose and Lyrica as my evening dose, simply to not endure the side effects. Hope this helps.
1218873 tn?1300091216 when I was diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy of unknown etiology my doc put me on gabapentin up the dosage slowly to 1500mg well when i upped the dose I had a rash from head to toe so discontinued the gabapentin and went to lyrica it was a godsend though I would have to up the dose every 6 months or so most of the bone pain went away , I now currently take 300mg 3 times a day which I am currently maxed out on dosage.
1218873 tn?1300091216 m now taking 300 mg of lyrica, plus 900 mg of gabapentin (ended up adding that back in after I got to 300 mg of lyrica and the dr didn't want to go higher, though I have seen the max dosage at between 450 and 600 of pregabalin).
634733 tn?1316625992 Gabapentin and Lyrica are anti-seizure medications (this class of drugs also reduces neuropathic pain) that effect the voltage gating of calcium channels in the nervous system. Just about all of the anti-seizure medications "can" (but not always do) cause weight gain. These drugs decrease certain neurotransmitters and increase neuronal GABA levels.
1345254 tn?1325918041 I was on a lyrica regiment for about 6 months and in regard to side effects, never had any adverse reactions that were of concern. At first the Dr started me on gabapentin (neurontin), but that stuff really messed with me. Within a week, I'd wake in the mornings horribly dizzy..It would take me a couple hours just to get feeling somewhat normal. So the Dr switched me to the lyrica..
1805240 tn?1317228731 Lyrica is sometimes considered a stronger form of gabapentin. Gabapentin is generic for Neurontin and Lyrica is brand name for Pregabalin. There have been several posts online from patients taking Lyrica, saying that the side effects are more severe than with Gabapentin. I have never tried Lyrica so I don't know if that would be the case for me. Everyone is different though.
Avatar f tn When I take Neurotin(Gabapentin) and it stops working, I start doubling up. I have a strong tolerance to medication as well. Just to start I have to take 2 at a time, but when it stops working I have to take 4. I'm on Oxy Morphone for pain, Neurotin, and Robaxin. Even with all of that, I still have breakthrough pain.
Avatar f tn I was on gabapentin. it did well helping my all around aches and pains (joint and muscle's). the one and only thing about it was that I felt drossy the whole next morning.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone on here has been on lyrica and then come off it. I stopped taking lyrica on Saturday AM. Starting on Sunday I was naseous, had headaches and no appetite. The worst is the pin prick skin sensation. Has anyone had this before if so what helps or makes it go away? I tried Benadryl last night but it did t help. How long does lyrica withdrawal last?
Avatar n tn left leg pain down the back of my leg my calf pain is very bad down to my numbing toes my DR.
293157 tn?1285873439 I started on Gabapentin and it worked at first. I have had 3 more attacks since then and after going up to 2700mg a day, my neuro switched me to Lyrica. He told me the difference is that if you draw a graph the effectiveness of the Lyrica goes up equally as the dose goes up. with Gabapentin the higher you go the more the effectiveness tapers off. That is probably confusing.
97654 tn?1214348650 Hi Kim First I would like to say that I am so sorry that you're going through this in the first place..... I also wanted to chime in here because I've had a horrible experience with Solumedrol as well.....Back in March I had extreme leg and groin numbness and went on IV Solumedrol for 3 days....I had a nasty reaction to it, but it DID take away the numbness and vision problems almost immediately....Well, within 48 hours anyway.....
1645454 tn?1301109800 Am currently taking 300 mgs Gabapentin q 4 hrs for Trigeminal Neuralgia and now, severe neuropathy from knees to feet. While it helps with the TN, it's not helping with the neuropathy. So, am going to try Lyrica. My question is: what would the same dosage of Lyrica be? The doc just told me 100 mgs Lyrica 3X a day?
Avatar f tn I have tried Gabapentin, and I am currently taking Lyrica, which is a relative of Gabapentin. It does help a little, but not enough to enable me to sit down longer.
Avatar f tn If Lyrica worked for you, then start the fight with the insurance company. Either find a doctor that will write you the letter for it, or talk with your doctor about the fact that it worked, and you need his help for recommendation. Insurance companies suck for this, but I have fought with mine countless times for medication, and they usually give in. Dont give up! I would ask your doctor why he wouldn't recommend the medication if it was working?
1983221 tn?1333506185 Lyrica and Neurontin (Gabapentin) are in the same class of drug and have similar side effects profiles.
Avatar f tn I think that it helped me with the RLS and a little with sleep. I had that and clonidine (BP med) and couldn't have gone cold turkey from tramadol without them! Good luck!
Avatar f tn I had a stroke in May of '12 and have chronic neuropathy in the right side of my entire body. I was put on Gabapentin by my doctor and was taking the Maximum a person can take in a day which is 3600mg a day now the doctor has backed off the Gabapentin to 900mg + added 450mg of Lyrica so far I don't feel a improvement, the Gabapentin was controlling the Nerve pain with hydrocodone 5-325 tab morning and noon but so far I haven't found any cure to just be normal again.
1637739 tn?1371688706 I came off Gabapentin about 2 weeks ago and I was on 600 mg gabapentin and am now on 175mg Lyrica. The jury is still out on the weight gain issue as it is too early for me to be able to monitor any changes. However I am not very pleased to see that grannyhotwheels thinks lyrrica is the worst. I may end up reassessing this change but will give it a few months first.
Avatar f tn Individuals respond differently to them. Gabapentin might work for you but do nothing for me. Lyrica may work for me but do nothing for you, etc.
233622 tn?1279334905 ve been on trileptal, topomax, lamotrigene, keppra, gabapentin(neurontin) and lyrica. Side effects made me stop the first three, a suspected side effect stopped me from taking the keppra, though we know now that it wasn't the med (my facial sensory stuff), I have only been given the last two for nerve pain. My neuro put me on gabapentin (neurontin), to work on my seizures, and the rib pain (which was the first neuropathic pain my gp recognized).
