Common Questions and Answers about Lump in throat painful swallowing

lump

Avatar n tn I was left with a lump in my throat and problems swallowing. The antibiotics cleared up the infection but the problem swallowing would still be there. It was bad most days with the occasional good day. No problem swallowing when drinking water... Could eat OK but food did get stuck.. Based on the information in this Website. I told my Doctor I thought I had acid coming up from my stomach.
Avatar n tn Painful swallowing is called odynophagia. Difficulty in swallowing is dysphagia. Reflux (GERD) is a common cause. Lump in the throat and extra production of phlegm are other common symptoms of GERD. Your ENT should be well equipped to identify it. Is the pain excruciating, like a charley horse? If so, it sounds like cricopharyngeal spasms. If not, count your blessings.
Avatar m tn I am also suffering from same kind of symtoms, in additions to this I also found some hard surface in my throat. I feel like I am having some heavy thing in my mouth, Sharp pains in throat and neck, this pain come from throat and goes to ear and head, My belches are stopped at throat only sometimes. What this could be?
Avatar n tn On a side note, the past few weeks (starting a 2 weeks before noticing this back lump) I have had a sore area in my throat (not a sore throat!, no pain swallowing, but an irregular feeling like a lump or abrasion) WITH what seemed to be salivary gland pain, two (first tender, then hard) lymph glands in neck, and pain/throb in armpit, groin, and femoral region (no noticed lumps except swollen pain in groin while on Augmentin) and ear pain.
Avatar n tn The lump in the throat feeling is one of the symptoms of acid reflux though no lump is actually found in the throat. since you have difficult in swallowing, I would suggest that you undergo upper GI endoscopy to rule out any organic cause of difficulty in swallowing.
Avatar n tn Except now I have what seems like a big lump in my throat when I swallow. It is not painful at all. I have acid reflux and just recently started taking vitamin C. I've noticed more heartburn the past three days. Anyway, anyone have any idea what this feeling in my throat could be??
678297 tn?1226546462 I had a sore throat for a couple months and a feeling of a lump in my throat with difficulty swallowing. Turned out to be acid reflux. Not sure if that's what you have, but thought I'd mention.
Avatar f tn Forr tha past few months it has been dizziness and chest pain. Now it is the lump in the throat type and difficulty in swallowing feeling.Have recently had some genuine problems with my stomach that have been treated, but was wondering how common such a symptom is amongst everyone else here?It is as if it feels "too real" to be anxiety related.
Avatar f tn I get something in the bottom of my throat after coughing and sometimes a sneeze. Not liquid, feels like a piece of food or something strange. When i swallow it goes away. I do have a few other silent reflux symptoms like clearing throat, dry cough and recently light sore or scratchy throat, but from what I've read the "lump" from silent reflux doesn't go away after swallowing. It does seem to get a little better after taking omeprazole 20, but it is still happening.
Avatar m tn Hi, Ken. Yes, Difficulty swallowing is a common MS symptom, but the sensation of having a lump in one's throat is also more commonly associated with severe anxiety where it is called "globus hystericus". (globus - mass or lump and hystericus - due to anxiety) I don't like the term, but the association with anxiety is undeniable. Also, reflux is another possibility. Many intense emotions, like sorrow, also can create this feeling.
Avatar m tn Welcome to the gastroenterology community! I would recommend seeing an ENT doctor about this to fugure out what is going on, instead of trying to treat yourself.
Avatar f tn Lump in throat. Sometimes I as well get the feeling of a necklace around my throat, on a few occassions it turned out to be (even though I have other GI problems) stress or what is soetimes called hysterical throat.
Avatar f tn I went thorough a similar problem 9 years ago with the lump in the throat and anxiety. I also had a stricture in my Esophagus just 3 years ago that had to be stretched and for me,there was a definite difference between the two and how they felt. With the stricture, I was having bad Acid reflux, to the point that it caused the Esophagus to scar up and it actually was narrowing. When I would eat or drink, it felt like the food just moved so slowly down my throat, especially cold drinks.
Avatar f tn HR would spike in 200s, elevated BP, SOB, chest pain, tightness in chest and throat, heavy lump in throat, flushing, weakness, tingling and numbness in legs and arms...pratcially every known SVT symptom all at once. EP doctor diagnosed it as left atrial tachy. I am 6 weeks post ablation and feel much better. Ablation seems to be succesfful but dr said there were a few more spots that could give me trouble later down the road.
203342 tn?1328737207 ve experienced the same thing for several months - lump in the throat feeling, difficulty with swallowing, more on one side than the other, coughing and clearing my throat frequently -- went to my GI and he is convinced it is related to the GERD. Reflux is one of the most common causes for the lump in the throat, according to my doc. I was already taking meds for GERD, but he changed me to a stronger medication, and that did seem to help.

Avatar m tn For the past 2-3 days I have had a lump in my throat that feels like I have something lodged in there, like I swallowed something to big and it will not go down. It is a rather irritating feeling. What could this be? What are some immediate treatment options? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
346570 tn?1267500027 Lump in your throat (globus). Some people feel the sensation of a foreign body or lump in their throats when, in reality, no foreign body or lump exists. Stress or excitement may worsen this sensation. Oftentimes, resolving the stress alleviates the problem. Actual difficulty swallowing usually isn't present." I also know this from personal experience. I had it for 3 months straight about 1 1/2 years ago and still get it off and on.
Avatar f tn For about 4 years now, I've had this weird lump in my throat. It's not there all the time but I notice it mostly at night. It feels like I have to keep swallowing my saliva. It keeps me awake and I'm really worried that I have cancer in my esophagus. I rarely get heart burn and it's the only symptom that I have. Is it possible that I have Barrett's esophagus?
Avatar n tn If you are having problems with acid reflux, the sensation could be globus. It's a 'feeling' of something in the throat - like a lump. If this is the reason, you need to work with your doc to try to bring the reflux under control.
Avatar n tn your lump in the throat is probably harmless "globus pharyngeus", in other words, your cricopaharyngeal muscle in your throat is just too tight. Two major reasons for this are reflux and increased stress (and why not both!). More information e.g. homepage.mac.com/changcy/globus.htm. Most voice and swallowing centers tell something about this as it is such a classical symptom of laryngopharyngeal reflux.
Avatar n tn I now am experiencing a feeling of a lump in my throat when I swallow and the front of my neck seems swollen or enlarged. It is very difficult to swallow if my head is even slightly titled up. What could be causing this?
Avatar f tn Hi, Cancers that involve the throat, base of the tongue, tonsil, or pharynx usually present with a sore throat that does not go away, cough, difficulty swallowing, weight loss, ear pain, blood-tinge sputum or a lump in the back of the mouth, throat or neck. Are there other symptoms present? You have an increased risk of developing throat cancer if you smoke tobacco and drink alcohol, chew betel quid, or being infected with human papillomavirus (HPV).
