Low-carb diet trumps low-fat on 'good' cholesterol By STEPHANIE NANO Associated Press Writer The Associated Press Monday, August 2, 2010 5:15 PM EDT NEW YORK (AP) — Over the long term, a low-carb diet works just as well as a low-fat diet at taking off the pounds — and it might be better for your heart, new research suggests. Both diets improved cholesterol in a two-year study that included intensive group counseling.
219363 tn?1189755821 I am dieting and exercising not only to feel better, but also to lose weight. I have done a very strict low calorie diet with 1200-1500 calories, and exercise everyday. I might lose 1 lb in 3-4 weeks that way. I have recently started a low carbohydrate diet with calories maybe 1500-1800 daily and 20 carbs maximum. My intake consists of vegetables, lean beef, chicken, pork and fish. I also eat eggs and 4 oz of cheese daily. I am losing weight on this plan.
Avatar m tn Harvard researchers put pre-obese people (they had just lost 10-15 percent of their body weight) on three different diets—a low-fat, high-carb diet; a low-glycemic diet with fewer carbs; and a high-protein, high-fat, Atkins-style diet. Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.

Avatar f tn Hi, A lower calorie balanced diet is very effective for weight loss. A low carb diet causes the body to go into Ketosis whereby the body uses its fat as a source of energy. Also when you are in ketosis your body feels less hungry. This all sounds good except that this can also lead to kidney issues (even failure), osteoporosis, and kidney stones. Stay balanced and control your calories and you'll lose weight and avoid the side effects. Good luck.
193609 tn?1292180293 Well I think a low carb diet is anywhere from 25-50 carbs a day. I think depending on your weight now and height and with your activity level you have to check out what amount you need to start losing weight.
Avatar m tn Barb, I was on low-carb diet for a long time, but recently I found out that for many people like me, eating a low-carb diet may weaken the thyroid or even cause hypothyroid. If you google "low carb diet and low thyroid", you will see that eating "safe" carbs like sweet potatoes or rice will help out your thyroid a lot. http://chriskresser.

Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar m tn Despite difficulty of weight loss, this should be attempted with moderate calorie restriction (this is easier on a low carb diet, as the high fat makes it quite satisfying, and using low carb veges for their filling effect. Weight loss will help reduce insulin resistance. If she is on a statin drug, consider option of taking it out. Statin drugs are not well proven for women, and may contribute to the insulin resistance.
591470 tn?1218975186 You stated you are on a low carb diet. Are you eating protein in place of the carbs and maintaining an intake of 1500 calories per day? Besides genetic, loss of hair is either not enough protein or not enough calories to maintain your body. If that is not the case, then see your MD and get blood work done to see if there is a decrease of any other nutrients and be treated properly.
231441 tn?1333892766 Has anyone tried very low carb diet for managing diabetes, and preventing or minimising the use of insulin? It appears that all of a sudden my blood sugar is now 'diabetic' and I can't seem to tolerate regular diet any more if I want normal blood sugars.
526889 tn?1212540641 For your age you need 1500 calories daily to safely lose weight. I would recommend a Heart Healthy diet which is a moderate fat diet. Moderate fat diet means = use polyunsaturated (omega 3, corn oil, nuts, etc) fats and monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc) fats, no saturated fats (high fat snack foods, butter, fat spreads) and no trans fats.
Avatar f tn I just now looked up the keto diet and thyroid problems - it looks like very low carb intake (ketosis) is associated with lower free T3 levels and may prevent T4 from being converted in to T3, but if you are doing a "low carb" version without giving up carbs completely, you should be ok. (And taking supplemental hormone should help you get to the right level of T3 even if you are in ketosis).
1756367 tn?1400884364 The Atkins diet is just one example of a low carb diet. It is perhaps the best known because it is the first low carb diet that caused a media sensation in the 1970s and 80s. Against popular medical advice that stated that we should cut fats and proteins, Atkins advocated a diet rich with proteins and fats and very few carbs. There are now many other popular low carb diets available - many are very similar to Atkins.
107693 tn?1252864443 For me I find I can reduce the dawn effect, by limiting how many carbs I eat. On a low carb diet I can normalise my fasting blood sugars. but on high calorie and/or carb it will go high. I find that a very low carb diet is far more effective at controlling blood sugars than the typical high carb diet that many with diabetes adopt. (ie. American Diabetic Association would say I should eat about 240 g of carbs per day.
