Maybe leaving is just his way of healing himself , getting time to himself and stuff . Try talking to him to see how he's feeling and where he stands . But here's the thing -- unless you have a physiological condition that prevents you from absorbing the food you eat, and that is a condition that exists, eating more of anything will help you gain weight. The more food you eat that metabolizes quickly into sugar or contains high fat will likely help you to gain weight.

Increase/decrease your exercise and calorie intake. If you continually do the exact same thing, your body gets used to it and simply expects that. Changing your routine every few days will keep things more "upset", so your body won't have a chance to get used to it.

So how fast is your heart beating? Do you feel faint? The other issue you may want to check out might be hyperthyroidism. It can cause a fast heart rate and weight loss. If you haven't had it checked you might want to go to your GP to be tested.
