Common Questions and Answers about List of medications causing weight gain

drug

Avatar f tn Some psychiatric medications can cause weight gain. Some can cause metabolic changes that lead to weight gain. Each medication has a different side effect profile and with some weight gain is less of a concern but each person responds differently to each medication. This is a list that could be used for informational purposes to discuss with your psychiatrist: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.htm Weight reduction can be helped by an appropriate diet.
Avatar f tn I didn't experience any weight gain with either of those medications. Prozac did cause weight gain, but Paxil did not. That's my experience, it may not necessarily be yours... As to citalopram in general, I found it caused more anxiety than Paxil, so i wouldn't recommend it.
Avatar f tn Side effect profiles vary from medication to medication and there are other mood stabilizers that have less of a potential for weight gain. As well although lithium is generally the mood stabilizer used first (being that it was the only medication developed specifically for bipolar, all the others were discovered to have that use afterwards but there still are many FDA approved first line mood stabilizers, this is a list of all mood stabilizers: http://www.psycheducation.
Avatar f tn Most psychiatric medications have the side effect of weight gain - some more than others. The thing you have to watch is if your food intake increases or not. A lot of times your appetite and your beverage desire will increase causing weight gain. Sometimes it is just the medication that does it.
Avatar m tn The weight will come off when you discontinue the medication - or switch to a medication that has less of a chance of causing weight gain (ie. Prozac). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood. It tends to have a sedating effect that can interfere with your metabolism and make you feel more hungry (especially for sugar and carbs).
Avatar f tn For instance, if you have psychosis with your episodes, and atypical antipsychotic might be a good place to start, but most of them can cause weight gain. Geodon is the exception, being weight neutral (and Abilify is almost as good apparently from the weight standpoint). If you're BP II, especially if you're mostly depressive, Lamictal is a great place to start, and is weight neutral.
675329 tn?1297288378 boy o boy do I agree with VintageChicken. Your doctor sounds like a prescription nut!. Do you have a diagnosis? or is he just pulling the names of medicine out of his, ah, er, hat? I must say I've never heard of Gabapentin nor Zonegram. I'm sorry to say I have heard of Topamax-simply no place in Fibromyalgia treatment from every report I've heard, read, seen and made from personal experience. It cripples every mind that I've learned about.
Avatar f tn OMG.....a majority of my worst itching episodes are in the middle of my back too. It is enough to drive you crazy when you can't reach the spot. I use a back scratcher too and have already torn my back open because the itching was so intense. I have yet to find a cream that works either. Old age? I don't consider 40's old (will be 41), but my joints sure feel old. Does the chiropractor help with the knee pain? I have never gone to one. They kind of scare me....
Avatar f tn Everyone is different when it comes to medications and their thyroid disease-though weight loss is more common of Graves' disease, some people gain, just like some people lose weight being hypo. I was on 5 of methimazole myself when diagnosed with Graves', and gained 15lbs. For me, it was much needed-I had lost nearly thirty pounds in just a few short months being un-medicated.
Avatar f tn If this is an issue you could discuss with your psychiatrist what medication would have the least potential of weight gain. I know Lamictal had less of this concern as regards myself and that is in general use but each person responds differently to each medication. This is a list that you could discuss with your psychiatrist as to what available options are: http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.
440728 tn?1234645302 I was taking it for a whil but I gain a lot of weight and my mouth was very dry. I learned that if the doctors don't know what is wrong with you they will give you antidepressants. I hope that you will some better answers from endocrinologist. I was told that I am depressed as well and I believed it for many years and I wasn't feeling depressed either. Trust your inner feelings and listen to your body.Blessing.
Avatar f tn Question is if most of my weight gain is from the medications then how do you drop the weight from medications, without causing a problem. I look awful, like a 9 month pregnant person and my guy friends tease me all the time so I try not to go out of the house too often. I am just ugly. I have had 2 kids, 10 years apart and raised them alone and never had a weight problem. There has got to be some easy solution to help promate weight loss.
Avatar f tn I would also ask that her doctors go over her current list of medications and look for any that could be causing weight loss or loss of appetite. I would ask the same of her pharmacist (sometimes the pharmacist will see something the doctor misses or vice versa; when it comes to meds, it always pays to get both opinions). If a medication may be the culprit, discuss the feasibility of changing to an equivalent drug to see if you get any improvement.
Avatar m tn I was wondering how much weight gain anyone has experienced with celexa ? Or any of the other antidepresents?
1668236 tn?1308156426 Still have some symptoms but less severe. I know potential list of side effects of methim are scary but not too common I think. When I went a little hypo I was really tired and gained a couple pounds in spite of dieting and exercise. It is extremely difficult to lose weight on meds. But easier to maintain so you should be okay. Dont be afraid to have md check labs if you start gaining and have hypo symptoms. I'm still new to all this and still learning.
Avatar f tn Well that's very great news. Some of us are on medications that don't cause weight gain and it is much better. But some of us still are and the medications still work and don't cause other problems. For myself, the mood stabilizer I take Clonidine causes weight gain. I bought some chocolates today and I had already eaten dessert. I was going to snack on them anyway but I told myself not to or the weight gain would start so I didn't.
Avatar f tn You might find that you will not lose any weight at all on these medications, or you might find you will lose some weight on these medications as I did, or you may find you lose a lot of weight on these medications as the recent forum member who posted did. But, you will NOT find that you gain weight on these medications. Weight gain is NOT a side-effect of either of these medications so you do NOT have to worry about that side-effect at all.
Avatar f tn i switched to wellbutrin because i gained so much weight from effexor! although i am sure that it is not all the drugs fault, the weight gain has created a depression on top of anxiety. i have so many mixed messages of myself. unhappy because i am overweight, and unhappy that i have to take pills for anxiety that is also contributing to being overweight. i don't know which is worse??? i feel absolutely crazy! my husband and kids must be getting tired of all this nonsense!
Avatar f tn Weight gain is one potential side effect of Cymbalta but it would also depend on your other medications and if they have this side effect as well. It would be worthwhile to speak to your psychiatrist about this and they could see how to adjust and/or change your medications as needed and also how this specific side effect could be addressed.
Avatar f tn I just saw a new doctor and he believes the Citalopram is causing my weight gain. I have been on it for about 18 months. I am now taking half a pill of Citalopram in order to wean myself off of it. My doctor then prescribed me Bupropion HCL (take twice a day). He says that should help with weight loss. Has anyone had good experiences with Bupropion? Did you gain weight on Citalopram? Thanks!!!
