Lipitor use in the elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor use in the elderly

lipitor

161427 tn?1229911282 I would like to do a short experiment by taking my mother-in-law off Plavix for a few days while she is in her normal living conditions at the nursing home. However, I have not seen dementia listed in any materials related to Plavix, so no one caring for my mother-in-law takes this idea seriously. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Could it be dangerous to take her off the Plavix for a few days? Are there any substitutes for Plavix that might work better?
Avatar n tn The Department of Geriatrics at Johns Hopkins University conducted a dedicated seminar at Mount Sinai Hospital geriatrics department three years ago warning against inappropriate use of risperdal in the elderly.

Tbd I use Lipitor. My doctor suggested I take CoQ10 along with it to cut down on the joint pain. Diet and exercise are the best remedies for high cholesterol.
Avatar n tn Recently while I was driving in Jakarta and saw a banner promoting heart CT scan. I took this chance and did the scan. I was told by the local doctor my calcium score was 252. She wanted me to see a Cardiologist as soon as possible. The next day I did see the local Cardiologist. He did a normal stress test ( without ECHO) and said I was OK and requested me to take a baby Asprin daily. I went to Australia last week and saw another Cardiologist for a seconed opinion.
Avatar m tn It's funny you should say that. I ran out of lipitor (40mg a day) and it took my GP 3 days to get a repeat prescription sorted out. A lot of my pains seem to vanish. I don't know if you get the same thing, it's a kind of annoying ache in the lower chest area and it's very difficult to tell if it's the heart or the stomach. It's always there but sometimes increases in waves. As soon as I resumed the lipitor, the pains returned. Coincidence?
Avatar m tn There has been considerable discussion concerning the use of statins in healthy people with low cholesterol levels and no risk factors. In the UK, they are testing a daily med that contains a statin to healthy individuals to reduce the risk of developing CAD. It will be interesting to see the results when the study is complete. Until then, there is no real risk of stopping a statin except that your numbers may return to an unhealthy level.
519736 tn?1253986826 Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep. he has missed the last 2 days of work.
900662 tn?1469390305 The links work fine JB. Thanks for sharing them. This information about statins has been around for some time now. As far as I'm concerned, the medical community and FDA seem to want to downplay the potential dangers of statins for some reason. That second link you shared is a perfect example of the double-talk used. The guy being interviewed finds several ways to say, "Well they can do bad things but don't worry yet." So when do we worry?
Avatar n tn I was on lipitor was many years but no doctor ever checked my blood. Last year I went off of this med because when I was hospitalized for something else they discovered that my liver enzymes were high. I'm still off lipitor and my enzymes flutuate from high normal to high. I'm wondering if the lipitor did damage to my liver. Also, I have some neurological issues which includes my muscles. Am wondering if the lipitor caused this. My total cholesteral is 226 and my LDL is 79.
Avatar n tn We are the only country in the world that treats the sick, the elderly and the poor as we do here... SHABBILY, WITHOUT DIGNITY OR RESPECT. Anyway, seems like you both need "doctorectomies" unless you feel you can ask your doctors if you can try ARMOUR thyroid. If you want to know why, go to StopTheThyroidMadness.com and read all the info there. When I hear "my doc was MAD because....." I could scream. How dare they not listen to all your problems!?
Avatar n tn I drink socially and take liptor and was wondering in that I only drink in the evenings if it's better to take the lipitor in the morning in order for the liver to metabolize the alcohol at night. Or is the liver simply distributed evenly over a 24 hour period making the time you take it with alcohol irrelevant. Does drinking 1.5 - 2.0 oz of scotch or bourbon within an hour or two of taking 20 mg of Lipitor create an elevated risk of Liver or Kidney dysfunction?
Avatar f tn He offered help me to sweep the floor/yard. Hanging and picking up the clothes. He also concentrated on the weather make sure he picked up the clothes before it rained. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us). He said to me, when getting old all the bones shrink, so can feel the body aching. He said exercise is important. Even he was on the bed, he also moving his toes and fingers a lot.
10996785 tn?1432812977 I realize that some people may not like the talking about lipitor in this way. Some people may not think my problems are as bad as I say. They are. I can hardly move anymore. What makes matters worse is that stopping the med doesn't take away the side effects very quickly. I want to thank everybody for your concerns and help in identifying my problems. I'm tapped out right now. Hopefully this is the last that you all will hear me complaining about my health issues.
Avatar m tn , Neena to me, Sally OPR dtp PFIZER LIPiTOR show details Apr 22 (3 days ago) Hi Dan - so you're taking about an ad placed in the US. In that case, I'll refer you to my colleague Sally who is based in NY and since you're in the US. She'll the best person to help you out. I'm glad Lipitor helped you. Avatar n tn I've been on Clonanzipam for 4years now and am up to 4mgs. a night. I'm scared of getting addicted, but can't sleep without it. Is there any danger of taking over the counter sleeping pills now and then so that I'm not taking Clonazipam every night. I've gone to bed when really tired without anything and no side affects what so ever.
495284 tn?1333894042 Occasionally I will use Echinacea for my dog (the vet knows I do on the odd occasion, say if she has a skin wound, or something, and says it's ok) But I'm unsure about which herbs are/are not -ok for dogs, so am not very experimental. I do know the herbs mentioned on the site I gave you a link to are specifics for incontinence and urinary problems...but like I said I don't have the experience of using them for dogs, so don't know the correct dosage.
Avatar n tn 1) In studies comparing equal doses of Crestor to Lipitor, Crestor has been shown to lower LDL levels ~10% and increase HDL levels 2-4% more than Lipitor. Your triglyerides, total cholesterol, and LDL's are in the optimal range, and your HDL level is in the middle. Based on these numbers, there doesn't seem to be a need to switch to Crestor. 2) There is little evidence on the use of EPA alone.
620048 tn?1358018235 I had to stop taking Lipitor last year because of the side effects of this statin - I felt like I had the flu, with aches all over. When the non-stop intestinal side effects kicked in to the point I was passing blood I waved the surrender flag. I went off the lipitor, with my cardio's knowledge, and almost immediately felt better. This was all BEFORE I had read the problems with statin drugs.
Avatar f tn Lipitor studies have shown that Lipitor not only reduces cholesterol, but reduces cholesterol already in the arteries and maybe heart valves. You may want to check into it. The calcification can change from mild to moderate relatively fast, so you will want to watch it carefully. Has your doctor spoke to you about echocardiograms every few months to monitor the calcification? Definitely eating healthy helps. Stay away from processed meats, red meats, adding extra salt to meals.
1352904 tn?1278356105 There have been doctor reports of depression, anxiety, personality change, and even psychoses in various drug databases because the brain needs CoQ10 (which the body makes, but in lower and lower amounts the older we get) and statins deplete this (see Merck's patents #4933165 and 5082650 where they apply for patents on pills combining CoQ10 and small amounts of statin, saying "it is clearly evident scientifically that there would definitely be a decrease in immune functions, as well as
Avatar n tn I have been having many side effects and need some expert advice. I have the taste of blood in my mouth most of the time, I have actually spit up blood on one occasion, I have massive headaches that last for hours, my circulation is bad, I am always cold, my skin hurts to touch, I bruise easily, I am depressed all of the time, I have no ambition and so on. I saw my GP today. He says that I have to either get off the Plavix or the codine becasue my blood is not too thin.
620048 tn?1358018235 d with MS, so who knows if the aches and twitches were from the Lipitor or the MS. I felt like I was coming down with the flu. The problems did stop pretty quick after I stopped the lipitor. Stopping these drugs does not require a taper, from everything I know. My cardio knew I was stopping the Lipitor and did not advise the taper either. From all I know, lipitor and other statins do not cause bruising either.
