Lipitor or simvastatin

Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor or simvastatin

lipitor

Avatar f tn I should say the clinic did give me the simvastatin first but then switched to Lipitor. They themselved said it was better. I've heard of Lipitor going generic in a few years - maybe that influenced their decision to switch patients now. I just can't understand how they can override the cardiologist without any chance of appeal. I will speak to him again and see if he thinks he should intervene. In the meantime I have a mysterious bruise on my calf that needs to be looked at.
Avatar n tn Actually, Lipitor is much stronger than Simvastatin and has a much higher incidence of side effects, unless I have missed some new data. According to the links I have Simvastatin is the safest statin on the market.
Avatar n tn was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
Avatar n tn We both - husband and wife, have been experiencing these symptoms. We have been on simvastatin for (wife for 1+ years, me for 2+ years) and stopped about 5-6 months ago - wife still having pains in the butt some dizziness and leg pain, but getting better - I am having butt pain and leg pains, swollen left knee, (but joint pain seems OK on stairs), recovery seems slower than my wife's.
Avatar f tn I have been taking Simvastatin 20mg for about 2 years, but recently my bad cholesterol has gotten very high to where it is elevated. Now, I admit to not being consistent lately with taking my medication; could this be the cause for my cholesterol to skyrocket?
10996785 tn?1432812977 Hey guys. I post in different communities here. I know that it's known that lipitor has the side-effect of muscle tiredness and aches. Has anyone else have to deal with this? Man it's off the hook. I almost am paralyzed fro, lipitor. This horrible and I would like to talk to someone who's been through it. This is a very under-rated affliction IMO. I've been tested and it doesn't look like I have the Rabadolosis<sp? That spelling isn't even close.
519736 tn?1253986826 My husband was prescribed generic lipitor about a year ago. Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep.
Avatar n tn Hi there, In my experience the Adco-Simvistatim is not a good Statin - not as strong as the original: Lipitor. I also have familial-high-cholestorol and have been on Lipitor since my early 20's and for the past 6 years I was on 20-40-60mg Nexium. The 6 months that I was on Simvistatim, my Trigs went up and when I changed to Lipitor, my levels came down and is still under control. Just check your levels again in about 3 months, but try to get Lipitor/Aspavor instead.
Avatar n tn I have been taking Lipitor (20mg) and my wife has been taking Simvastatin. Prior to being put on medication, my cholesterol had been running about 205 for a long time and my wife's had been around 160. What is the difference betwen the two? My medication is considerably higher than mine? Can you explain why? My blood sugar was running abot 137 so my Doctor also put me on Actoplus as well. My Lipitor is about $100 and my wife's Simvastatin is about $6 (same quantity of tables-30).

Avatar n tn I think it's more of which one your body will tolerate the best. Different brands seem to show different side effects in many people. Lipitor in some women have produced breast pains or enlargement and even the manufacturers cannot explain that one. Still, I suppose it's cheaper than plastic surgery. Some statins cause abdominal pains in some people, or nausea or serious muscle cramps and even damage.
Avatar n tn does anyone know if its normal when switching statins for the alt ast numbers to spike or is this a sign of body rejecting new statin? was on liptor 20 but not liking it so two weeks ago started simvastatin 30 to see if more tolerable b/c my research said it had the lowest rate of side effects of the potent statins. numbers were normal on 20 lipitor but are now alt 68 ast 54.
Avatar m tn You are on one of the more powerful statins so you can ask your doctor about Vytorin which is simple Simvastatin and Zetia which works both in the liver and in the digestive tract. Simvastatin is usually better tolerated than Lipitor. It would help to know what your LDL and HDL levels are as well, we could possibly give you a better answer.
Avatar n tn , 3 years of ADT, 2006 bilateral orchiectomy, cholesterol levels, currently taking lipitor 40, blood sugar elevated, probably metabolic syndrom. What is best course of treatment? Avatar m tn Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe).
Avatar m tn Does anyone know if I can substitute 20 mg Lipitor for my 20 mg Simvastatin, which I just ran out of? I have some Lipitor in the cabinet and my doc is going to put me on Vytorin in 11 days. I was trying to avoid a new Rx of Simva since I have a cupboard full of comparable meds and will be starting Vytorin soon. I can't get a hold of my doc for a week. Just wondering if anyone knew of any bad reactions, a required layoff before switching, etc. Thank you very much.
907968 tn?1292622204 I'm on a 30 day trial offer from Crestor (20mg) to replace my Simvastatin (20mg). I'm sure I know the answer to this question but hearing other opinions would be welcomed... As I understand it, Crestor is a bit stronger than Simvastatn, or should I say, You can take a smaller dose of Crestor to equal Simvatstatin. Other than the equivalent dose change is there any other differences - side effects I should be looking for?
Avatar f tn I was originally on Simvastatin 20mg at night for a few years but I have missed here and there. my Dr changed me to Lipitor 40mg the other statin medication and since starting it one night ago, I've experienced some pain in my chest...not so much on the right side. is this normal? My bad cholesterol was evelevated which is why I was changed. but can't I just exercise or does taking the medication have to happen to bring it down?
1846163 tn?1331048748 alfuzosin (Uroxatral), cisapride (Propulsid), pimozide (Orap), atorvastatin (Lipitor, Caduet), lovastatin (Mevacor, Altoprev, Advicor) or simvastatin (Zocor, Simcor, Vytorin), midazolam (Versed), triazolam (Halcion), sildenafil (Revatio) or tadalafil (Adcirca) when used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, St. John's wort, rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate), ergonovine, ergotamine (Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E.
Avatar f tn Average incidence per 10 000 person-years for monotherapy with atorvastatin, pravastatin, or simvastatin was 0.44%" Here's the link; http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/292/21/2585.full It is extremely rare and is not associated with Zocor (Sivastatin) more than any other statin. Statins are being found to be much safer than previously thought. For instance, it has been determined that statins help increase liver function in individuals with liver disease.
Avatar m tn The difference is dramatic, Lipitor has a half life of 14 hours compared to just 5 for Simvastatin meaning you can build up larger serum loads of Lipitor. As far as CoQ10 goes, it's a supplement so it has not undergone the kind of studies that medications go through. I falls under the "hey, it won't hurt you" category for me as there may be issues in which the body can absorb it.
10996785 tn?1432812977 And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. If you get pregnant, stop taking LIPITOR and call your doctor right away. If you take LIPITOR tablets, tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness. This could be a sign of rare but serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure. Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and all medications you take. This may help avoid serious drug interactions.
Avatar n tn t find the right medicine...Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my energy...my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing. I am really troubled by my doctor's lack of concern.
