Avatar f tn Plavix has a unique mechanism of action by blocking the amplification of platelet activation by released ADP, and often used with aspirin to prevent the risk of clots for the first year after DES implant. Plavix and aspirin have different mechanism of action to prevent clots. After a year, plavix is usually discontinue as the risk for clots is decreased, and aspirin is continued long term. The risk of a clot is about 3%.
Avatar m tn I am not physically restricted - I walk 1 mile or more day and do 10 minutes of other light exercises most days. My BP runs under 120/80 most of the time. I understand carvedilol helps prevent stiffening of the heart muscle and can help restore LV function to some degree. How specially, so it do this? What is the biochemical mechanism?
Avatar n tn Blood levels of cyclosporine are increased if taken with grapefruit juice. A plausible mechanism involves the combined inhibition of enteric CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein, which potentially leads to serious adverse events (e.g., nephrotoxicity).Blood levels of tacrolimus (Prograf) can also be equally affected for the same reason as with cyclosporine.
Avatar n tn As for red yeast rice, while it does help with cholesterol, it is much weaker in action than lipitor. Usually a combination treatment is used in natural medicine for high cholesterol, the most important being raising the good cholesterol.
Avatar m tn The mechanism of action of Campral® (acamprosate calcium) Delayed-Release Tablets in maintenance of alcohol abstinence is not completely understood. Originally, several neurotransmitter systems, including GABA, were investigated for a possible role in Campral's mechanism of action. However, recent evidence suggests Campral's main interaction is with the glutamate system. Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition.

Avatar m tn Oyakawa I am in my 3rd year of medical school and I was wondering the mechanism of action of steroid injections in the eyelid causing cataracts. It is not an osmotic agent so why does that occur? thanks so much.
Avatar m tn Vytorin is a combination, I believe, of Zocor and Zetia. Zocor should help with the cholesterol already there. If not, Lipitor has studies showing that Lipitor at 40mg can help reduce cholesterol on heart valves and in arteries. If it reduces cholesterol there, it may reduce cholesterol on the heart muscle. Cholesterol builds in the arteries, valves and muscle of the heart. In order for cholesterol to stick, there has to be a sticking spot.

Avatar n tn PPIs are so effective they have tons of known interactions with different mechanisms of action (e.g., extended release drugs can get messed up; increased bioavailability can raise levels of high toxicity meds (like colchicine) to a concerning degree). To answer your question, my lipids are very well controlled at 10mg dose. I don’t want to take omeprazole, as I sometimes do, if the interaction lowered bioavailability.
Avatar n tn Understand your predicament mam. Further course of action will depend on the extent of myocardial ischemia and the functional capacity of the heart. What is his ejection fraction? The ejection fraction is a useful measure of left ventricular performance. The normal range is 63-77% for males and 55-75% for females. It reflects the pumping capacity of the heart.

Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.

Gastroenterology. 2010 Jul;139 The therapeutic mechanisms of ribavirin for hepatitis C are unclear. Microarray analyses have shown that ribavirin increases induction of interferon-stimulated genes. We evaluated viral kinetics, serum cytokine expression, and viral mutagenesis during early stages of peginterferon therapy with and without ribavirin.
Avatar n tn All the advice I have had is not to take drugs like we all do on an empty stomach , it is far safer and less damaging if there is food in your stomach at the same time as the drugs , I was also advised that with night tablets even a milo or a glass of milk ( lite of course ) is beneficial in protecting our internals from the harsh actions of the drugs we take .
Avatar f tn My husband was recently taken off of Lipitor and has been experiencing daily headaches. He's not a headache person. Is this a common thing when coming off Lipitor? Also, I have read that you should stop it gradually. Is this true?
10996785 tn?1432812977 Your doctor should do blood tests to check your liver function before starting LIPITOR and during your treatment if you have symptoms of liver problems. Call your doctor right away if you have the following symptoms of liver problems - feel tired or weak or have a loss of appetite, upper belly pain, dark amber colored urine or yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes. Elevated blood sugar levels have been reported with statins, including LIPITOR.

Avatar n tn Thank you for your comments. You are correct! I have asked my husband to please see his cardiologist for an evaluation. If his doctor recommends 80 mg's of Lipitor daily I will accept his expertise. You would never believe I am a nurse! I guess when it comes to a loved one all knowledge flys out the window!! Best wishes to you, I trust you will do well.

Avatar m tn Hi all, My father had a triple by pass surgery about 18 months ago, and has been taking Lipitor, Perondopril and Atenolol. He's been getting abnormal hair growth on one side of his leg and back and chest since he's been on Lipitor, and Perondopril. I googled to see what I could find, and found this site saying that Lipitor can cause abnormal hair growth. http://www****.com/ds/lipitor/hair%20growth%20abnormal/ My question is, has anyone else taking Lipitor experience this?
